Platinum Stars fall to Chippa United

Platinum Stars’ Absa Premiership campaign got off to a losing start on Saturday evening as they were beaten 2-0 by newly-promoted Chippa United at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
Fresh from an impressive away win over Mamelodi Sundowns in the quarter-finals of the MTN8 last weekend, Dikwena would have been hoping to remind the Chilli Boys of just how tough PSL football can be.
Instead it was the hosts, who last appeared in the top flight in 2012/13, who were the better team and deservedly clinched three points to move – temporarily at least – to the top of the League standings.
Chippa got off to a great start and opened the scoring just nine minutes in, with captain Andile Mbenyane beating Siyabonga Mpontshane in the visitors’ goal to make it 1-0.
Less than 20 minutes later it was 2-0 to the Chilli Boys, with former Black Leopards striker David Zulu scoring his first goal for the club since his off-season move.
That Stars were off the pace of the game was evident in the fact that they had three players – Bongani Nyathi, Solomon Mathe and Rofhiwa Tshikovhi – booked by the referee within the first 30 minutes.
The second half saw Stars fight to come back into the match, but the Cape Town team – now based in Port Elizabeth – were able to hold out for a victory that coach Kosta Papic will hope sets the tone for the coming season.
Stars ended the match with 10 men after defender Tshikovhi received his second yellow card in the 89th minute and was sent for an early shower.
Chippa’s next League action sees them play away to SuperSport United on Tuesday evening, while Platinum Stars will be home to Free State Stars the following day.
