Tottenham Hotspur beat Orlando Pirates at Ellis Park

Spurs are 2011 Vodacom Challenge champs

Posted: Jul 23 2011

Tottenham Hotspur are the 2011 Vodacom Challenge champions after beating Orlando Pirates 3-0 in the Final at Coca-Cola Park on Saturday afternoon.

It was a repeat of the 2007 scoreline between the same sides, though Bucs will feel they deserved better, especially in the first half.

Pirates were by far the more enterprising team in the first 45 minutes and would have felt hard done by trailing at the break.

They had the first chance on 11 minutes – Andile Jali bursting through midfield and playing in Tlou Segolela, but Heurelho Gomes came up trumps in the one-on-one situation. From the resultant corner, Thulasizwe Mbuyane steered his free header wide.

Five minutes later and Spurs should have scored when Benoit Assou-Ekotto put in a perfect cross from the left towards Peter Crouch, but he ballooned his shot from eight yards out over the crossbar.

Rafael van der Vaart gave a preview of what’s to come on 21 minutes when his deflected free-kick drifted just wide, but immediately afterwards Bucs again had a glorious chance to score – Mbuyane heading wide when unmarked from six yards out after more excellent work by Segolela.

‘Sox’ was causing havoc with his pace and on 30 minutes he again set up a great chance, only for Bongani Ndulula shoots over from 12 yards out.

Five minutes later and you couldn’t but get a sense of déjà vu – Spurs again getting a dangerous free-kick against Pirates, and Van der Vaart again beating Meyiwa, just as he did at Mbombela Stadium.

Bucs had a good chance just before the break to level matters when Segolela again weaved his magic, but again Ndulula failed to capitalize.

It took Spurs just seven second half minutes to find their second goal, and again the scorer was Van der Vaart, who beat the offside trap and then Meyiwa at the second attempt.

It took Bucs a while to find their feet after that, and only on 70 minutes did they again threaten Gomes’ goal, but the Brazilian got down well to save Segolela’s shot.

Substitute Gareth Bale had a goal chalked off with his very first touch, and the Welsh winger second touch almost played him in again, but for some good work from Meyiwa.

Pirates should have drawn level with 10 minutes to go when referee Kaoma Wellington awarded them a penalty for handball in the area, but Segolela put his effort against the upright – a massive shame considering how good he had been all day.

Rudolf Bester stung Gomes’ palms with a rasping drive and Lucas Thwala headed wide from a corner, but it was Spurs who got the last goal – Jermain Defoe netting with three minutes remaining from Bale’s pinpoint cross.

Orlando Pirates: Senzo Meyiwa, Happy Jele, Lucky Lekgwathi (Rooi Mahamutsa 63), Siyabonga Sangweni (Rob yn Johannes 63), Reuben Cloete (Lucas Thwala 69), Thulasize Mbuyane (Sameegh Doutie 46), Oupa Manyisa, Andile Jali (Clifford Ngobeni 80), Daine Klate (Rudolf Bester 63), Tlou Segolela (Ndumiso Mabena 87), Bongani Ndulula (Mark Mayambela 62)

Tottenham Hotspur: Huerelho Gomes, Kyle Walker (Alan Hutton 46), Sebastien Bassong, Bongani Khumalo, Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Aaron Lennon (Roman Pavlyuchenko 60), Luka Modric (Gareth Bale 70), Tom Huddlestone (Winston Palacios 46), Steven Pienaar (Niko Kranjcar 46), Rafael van der Vaart, Peter Crouch (Jermain Defoe 46)

South African "champs" hammered 3-0 by Spurs who came no 5 in the EPL.

Hangwanie: 2011-07-23 17:09

Pirates supporters talks too much. Heheheheh we won tripple, tripple is what you got today. Counting the chicks before they hatch. All I can say is that Kids will always be kids, fans must start believing that Pirates is not big.

Khosi for life

lordjerry : 2011-07-23 17:09

mark mayambela my foot. Lucas thwala its over man u dont fit anymore were is mxoyana. Mark mayambela u r an a.s.s bt maybe it was traveling btwn 3 provinces in 5 days. Bester u r slow my boys bt mayambela u r nt a gud traveller

Hangwanie: 2011-07-23 17:10

Pirates disappointed us they should be taken off the vodacom cup, we need a very competitive team, yes lek....hahahahhahahh

Monza : 2011-07-23 17:10

Pie City ke masepa fela. Yooooooo Ndulula is a cow. Mayambela plays street soccer.

Nipsy: 2011-07-23 17:11

I am happy the Donkies can see now that there is a huge difference between big teams and smaller-nyana teams.

Tzozo : 2011-07-23 17:14

What a disgrace 2 SA. If Vodacom can guarantee Spurs to play is the finals can't they do the same with the Amakhosi, the only Mzansi team with a gud record against English teams.that will alos guarantee a capacity crowd.

Nipsy: 2011-07-23 17:16

They got a victory on Wednessday only to console themselves about 3 by 3 they got from big teams last season (Chiefs and Ajax) today they got another 3 by 3. Hai 3 by 3 FC madoda, where is Sugarbrand and Fong-KONG they have been making too much noise during the week.

delicious : 2011-07-23 17:17

Mayambela belongs 2 vodacom league... as a substitute! Period!

Tzozo : 2011-07-23 17:17

Chibuku are just a kak outfit. Hehehehehehe...this Mayambela guy must just consider a career in six a side futbal. By the way chibuku fans lyk telling us that Shabba is one-legged. How abt this clown Mayambela ? I c he is gud with both feet.

Jacob : 2011-07-23 17:19

Just watched da game yes in da end Spurs won convincingly, hweva I would lyk 2 differ sharply with comments frm Cebo Manyapelo wen he said "SA's don't know soccer dey just lyk futbal". He alluded 2 2 dose who blived our tims can hold deir own against epl tims. Persnly I blive Bucs played extremely well though da tim failed 2 convert sum clear cut chances.

Bucs wil stil b among strong contenders for da championship. As for critics lyk Cebo one wonders if its nt ignited by 2 much expectations for our league. Ours is stil developing on da same breath epl is full of quality imports in terms of players. Having said dat I'm proud of KC nd Bucs display against Spurs. Up da Bucs! Check da same Cebo singing Bucs praises during da Absa Premier lig season.

tt : 2011-07-23 17:19

the difference between the two was one took their chances and one didn't, but Pirates had a good game against full strength Spurs and i must say, SABC commentators continue to be critical of Pirates!!!! How long will such biast commentery contiune?

Rach : 2011-07-23 17:19

nywe! nywe! nywe! kuphi la. What a quite evening we will have.

Pat Mahlangu : 2011-07-23 17:20

Only one Soweto giant can kill England teams. Again Pirates, you will never be like Khosi.

Mzolistoi : 2011-07-23 17:21

Where was Ndulula he promised to score goals but he was nowhere to be cn. As for Mayambela the guy is a stokvel league material.

Marlon: 2011-07-23 17:22

I am so proud of our Pirates and Chiefs. The football they displayed this week shows that they are on the right track. Pirates have been a marvel to watch and I believe are going to be unstoppable this season if they continue in the same vein.

I dobelieve that this Tournament is Structurally "UNFAIR". You cannot have local teams play "2 midweek games" and expect them to "perform in the FINAL" against a EPL team. Its a joke and it hurts our football brand.

Pirate were tired, and you can see it. Tottenham were poor, and have no chance of being in the Top 4 to qualify for the Champions League this Premiership season.

On another note, how bad is Mark Mayambela? I could have counted on my 1 hand how many passes were successful. He only has 1 leg, and the other is asleep. He refuses to improve himself, and will continue to be a bit part player at Pirates this season. The fans patience at times really wore thin with him today.

Nkosi : 2011-07-23 17:22

He he we are hot , yada yada we beat Zebras, we wont feel spurs. Kuphi khona shapa spurs. Wheres insimbi? Wheres Drogba, Jali nd Manyisa. What a saturday. What went up on thursday came Down today. Ha ha feel it.

Dukes : 2011-07-23 17:23

Piecity must get tips 4rm Chiefs how 2 beat big teams.

khosi aka kaizer : 2011-07-23 17:24

its catle like emanuel tht cnt even speak proper english make me laugh. pirates beat us fair and square. atleast i have the ***** to admit that. its time to focus on our team and stp trowing stones. wher wer yu wen we lost to the same team. umona akazukusa ndawo. i am a khosi fan by the way and will neva change. am a proud south african

Chincha : 2011-07-23 17:24

This is a good wake-up call to Bucs players!! The coach was becoming too comfortable too soon!! A word of advice coach, Mayambela has his OWN AGENDA when playing! Loan him out! Buccaneer till Yeye hands over his fake ID!!

lordjerry : 2011-07-23 17:24

Mighty buccaneers dont win cups if they r not shown in high definition HD baba HD. We lost to a team that finished 5th in EPL, shabba failed trials at a team that got relegeted in the 2nd division England which is better dump ppl of funeral plan fc. Again tis game was nt in HD. 3 games in 5 days u hv to admit thats wrong.

ndoz : 2011-07-23 17:25

how can pierats fans expect their team to beat spurs. They knw is impossible 4 them. Let me congratulate spurs

Maganedisa : 2011-07-23 17:27

@Mahlangu it would be a demotion for Pirates to be compared to Chiefs-I agree with you Pirates will never be like Chiefs and its proven to play in the final after beating clearly Pirates have upper hand

Sizwe : 2011-07-23 17:28

Lol. ay umark mayambela is one funny player. he literally can't make a decent pass, it was hard not to laugh- i see another mandla masango but the latter is just slightly better..
It will be interesting to see the fans' starting 11 from both teams- pirates is most likely to keep the same players as last season (nevermind that these players are tired)- as for chiefs- they seriously need "reliable" players on the bench.
anyways, THE SKY IS THE LIMIT.

khosi.fan : 2011-07-23 17:29

wht a game 'bucs' had, sorry bucs hpe nxt tym u gna mke betta dan 2day. An overoll gme was gr8.

Nipsy: 2011-07-23 17:29

This Ndululula is learning that you don't just go to the media and praat kak, I hate Zodwa-Orphans FC now people from EUROPE will think that Mzansi soccer is poor while they actually played a wrong team. They should have played CHIEFS and CELTICS to get a run for their money.

Maganedisa : 2011-07-23 17:36

Nice tournament but the less said about the quality of commentators the better, only if it was on supersport-Football was the winner and the biggest looser was Cebo Manyabelo,Meyiwa,Mayambela,Shaba and VV-how can I forget Chiefs amongst loosers

TKzee : 2011-07-23 17:39

So Mzansi's "bestL can only manage a 3-O drubbing by a mid-table EPL side ? Yho, I shudder 2 think what wud happen the day Barcelona comes here.As for Mayambela they shud use him 2 entertain the crowds @ halftime.

Nkosi : 2011-07-23 17:42

Hey hey we tripplebel hey hey we once again. Go nd look for results of Vodacom final 2007. U can smell what Spurs is cooking! Hola tripple 3 nil treble boys. How was in the funeral for 2 hrs. Ha ha u get what u asked for on thursday night.

 : 2011-07-23 17:45

I only saw lil jimmys chasing Bale's shadow...hw can stupid coach think he can win with same teaam in 3 "consecutive" days...i cant wait 4 nxt wk...shapa Lebese shapa

TRUTH : 2011-07-23 17:49

Is mark mayambela a real "footballer" or a clown with the ball on his feet?
This is the type of player that gives skilful south african players a bad name.

Mfundo : 2011-07-23 17:50

Bucs plyd wel bt the bdr side won 2dy jst lyk thursdy the bdr side won

lordjerry : 2011-07-23 17:50

wats wrong wit sabc commentry its segolela wit te ball after 10 minutes bt the guy says doutie wats up did he c the starting lineup or wat thats y khoza sold the rights to supersport viva khoza viva. Up the bucs until funeral plan fc win a derby after playing an english team 48 hours earlier and spending only 3 hours preparing 4 dat derby the rest was travelling btwn mpumalanga n eastern cape. N the other tym was for eating n sleeping, while funeral plan fc spent 48 hours preparing. So hu is fooling hu.

semito : 2011-07-23 17:51

What a mediocrity of players they hv @ pierats, street football by Tlou,Mayambela,Doutie,Bester, etc,it looks like de Papic tenure is back

Sputlaldinho : 2011-07-23 17:53

The Donkeys lived up 2 their name. They were huffing nd puffing like real donkeys. It cud've been 5-0 2 Spurs. Even Leal celebrated Van Der Vaart's 2nd goal. What a stupid team!

mahoota: 2011-07-23 17:53

dat was true display of wat we call gud futball, and the ada team got sum free lessons frm the lectures dat are coming frm england and these lectures also passed sum lessons to one of the proffesors whu doesnt hv a degree, kwa kwa kwa

go lady go : 2011-07-23 17:54

Mayambela 4 lyf... once and always...

Boroto : 2011-07-23 17:58

Lightning strike twice in same place,Wt r de Brazillians doing @ pierats?Senzo ws beaten in de same spot jst like last week.It is still fact dt Khune is de 1 keeper in SA en dnt neet brasilian trainer to be perfect.

AAA : 2011-07-23 17:59

Hard luck Mabhakaniya. You lost to a better team.
I wonder if Mayambela's way of playing is what the Pirates meant by saying he "will allow players freedom to express themselves." If that's the case, I'm afraid that's NOT GOOD FOR THE TEAM. His inclusion did more harm than good to Pirates.
Hats off to Oupa Manyisa - WHAT A PLAYER?

Khosi4Life by Nature.

Finally some Evil Zebra Retards have found their voices afta being SILENT for 3 days afta w wiped their tiny behinds,,,,,,,,,

Overall w had a gud pre season tournament n i think if the Leal is clever he knws which players to use for the PSL campaign,,,,,,,,But guys this Mayambela is not bucs material n he proved tht on this tournament,,,,as for Jali/Manyisa combination is out of this world,,,,,

Am a Terrible Treble Tsiping Champ for live n no Zebra will take tht frm me.

bazookanc: 2011-07-23 18:09

Ja wat u Chiefs fans all u can do is criticise nd speak about what ur team is about but ur team failed to beat Bucs in this tournament this time around period now u wanna make small talk of good players nd a great team like Orlando Pirates Shame on u that is y u will remain fans instead of supporters maybe u cannot even play soccer urselves but u wanna talk soccer

lollllling : 2011-07-23 18:15

pierats were chasing shadows, even their hotentot mic the penalty mhhh. U were playing nonsense.

The Ghost: 2011-07-23 18:21

makhosikazi, why weren't you playing in the final instead? Oh I forgot you got whipped!!!

Sputlaldinho : 2011-07-23 18:27

The Donkies have let the cup go out of the country. If it was Chiefs the cup wud've remained in the country.

The Ghost: 2011-07-23 18:28

... after all Pirates lost to an English premiership team NOT Baroka X1!!!

The Ghost: 2011-07-23 18:29

@ sputladinyo ...so why didn't you play in the finals then?

 : 2011-07-23 18:32

at least there will be peace and quiet for seven days, on sat we'll make it permanent peace. Khosi!!!

Sputlaldinho : 2011-07-23 18:42

The Donkies r truly smaller. They failed 2 fill the stadium with help from some Chiefs fans. Next year they must b removed nd Celtic take the place of this underperforming Donkies.

bucs 4 life : 2011-07-23 18:52

Makhosikazi are so excited. we wipe deir ass hole last

Hubhu : 2011-07-23 19:03

Bucselona : 2011-07-23 19:23

Fatigue took its toll & we were tired after so much traveling. Spurs pack da bus & were so defensive. We had clear cut chances b4 1st half but we did not convert. Mayambela must be loaned 2 celtic, Mbuyane wil again be our hero and doutie must start da game. We played very well and once again up the Bucs!

vutomim@gmail.com: 2011-07-23 19:37

People this was a practice march no nid to make noise about it. Pie-Rats played good footbal but they still have the same problem as last year, No stricker to conver chances! The stage seem bigger for Ndulula alone maybe with time. As for Mayembela ysterday u were sending praises about his perfomance today its a different story. Give a guy a break. Spurs seems to hev learnt something from Chiefs-Pie-Rats game as you can see they were using long ball just like chiefs

Ms Itu@Bucs : 2011-07-23 20:51

Well done Spurs

Ms Itu@Bucs : 2011-07-23 21:09

Where were all dis noise making zebras on thursday after we whipped their asses - spurs game came n passed - we lost and we r taking it like real sportsmen unlike da zebras who were left speechless!!!

Now I know that the happy people are here again, uzobezwa abomakhala njalo, they are happy to get walloped, well what you guys do is worry about Chiefs even if you are playing the Ham, now you have been proven that your treble was just a flash epanini, well rosted by Spurs now we are all back to mother earth

Viva Khosi Viva

tonyMQ: 2011-07-24 09:15

Judging by the the comments in this forum, I agree with Cebo. In this country we really love soccer but very few of us understand it, but I believe Cebo was not directing those comments to Pirates in particular.

anyi4sealords: 2011-07-24 11:24

Recall OTOROGU or...............

viper: 2011-07-25 12:16

@Shadrack, we have never been out of this earth. Spurs is gone but we are here to stay...and there is no team in the PSL with Spurs quality. This is not the end for bucs but the begining. I reserve for my comments as far as your team is concerned....
