Ajax off to a winning start

Ajax Cape Town got their League campaign off to a winning start beating Bloemfontein Celtic 2-0 at the Cape Town Stadium on Friday night.

The goals were scored by Thulani Serero in the first half and Brett Evans added another in the 90th minute with a penalty kick.

Ajax far and away dominated the first half, their pace in attack giving the Celtic defence an ongoing headache.

Early chances were created by the hosts, but Terror Fanteni hooked an effort wide in the seventh minute and then a minute later the Cape side swept up-field in a breathtaking attack, but Sameehg Doutie could not round it off.

Further chances came from Lebohang Manyama, Fanteni and Serero, who with only the keeper to beat, flashed an effort wide in the 30th minute.

But the youngster made amends in the 34th minute, finishing clinically with a shot from the edge of the area, having shown good composure.

Ajax had more chances to add to the score, but Doutie in particular could not find the finishing touches needed.

The second half saw Phunya Sele Sele enjoying more ball possession, although they appeared to lack the ideas and cutting edge to break down the Ajax defence.

In fact, both Granwald Scott and Lebogang Manyama could have increased Ajax’s lead, but Scott missed a sitter, sending in a tame shot straight at Patrick Tignyemb.

It nearly proved to be costly as Moses Spandeel struck with a cracking drive from 25-yards out, but Ajax keeper Hans Vonk pulled off an outrageous save, while minutes later Nathan Paulse wasted a great chance.

The win was sealed in the injury time after Serero, who had an excellent game, was fouled by Thabo Nthethe and Brett Evans converted from the penalty spot to ensure a deserved three points for the Urban Warriors.

Bloem Celtic is going down unless they hire an experienced coach and reinforce their squad.too many changes have been made to the team which might cost the team heavely.

Sheriff: i cudnt agree with you more. Clint L****n wnt succeed in dis team nt bcos he's a bad coach bt bcos he doesnt have playas. How do u let half de team dat took u to top eight go at de end of the season? Celtic management and Owen Da Gama are to blame for all this. Some local coaches really have given every local coach a bad reputation which is why people like abo-Kaizer and Khoza dnt see value in them. No wonder he- Owen didnt last at Pirates. He's one bitter coach. I predict Celtic to be the whipping boys dis season. A bunch of amateurs they've signed wnt help the cause.....

Celtic management wil regret to find demselves in 2nd division-2 seasons to come. @ makhushane hlakisi phalaborwa

I don't think Celtic are a bad team and i definately don't think Clinton is a bad coach. He has about 5 years coaching experience guided by the very best of this country, Gordon, Prof. Ngubane, ODG. It's too early to make strong statements like Celtic will be the whipping boys!

Editor:Thanx dis oppurtunity to voice da performance of my team Pirates what a start thanx to Bucs family

@ Njabulo: do u think teams which get relegated at the end of the season lose points at de beginning or towards end of the league? Mototo, Mayambela,Malokase, Sambu,Ratshoane,Tsotetsi, Kanono. Nt forgetting that Spandeel was on transfer list. By Celtic standards these were all quality playas who've left but were replaced by who? A bunch of amateurs PSL is a revolutionary league. We'll send the likes of Ajax to take you out if u dnt know your story. They mustnt come with that amateur tendency here. Owen Da Gama leaving Celtic was a blessing in disguise. That man was bad news to this team. Ask Gavin Hunt when he won the league 3 times in a row what was his strategy. He makes sure he collects as much points in the first round. I'll repeat: i like Celtic but also predict that they'll be the whipping boyz this season
