AmaZulu beat Sundowns to reach Cup Final

Posted: May 15 2010

AmaZulu beat Mamelodi Sundowns 4-3 on penalties after the sides were tied 1-1 after extra-time to reach the Nedbank Cup Final where they will face Bidvest Wits.

The goals were scored by Lebogang Mokoena for Downs 74th minute and Sandile Gumede got the equaliser in the 89th minute to take the game to extra-time.

Usuthu had the better of first half exchanges, looking more threatening and energetic in attack.

Sundowns did have their fair share of ball possession, but their forays into the AmaZulu half were often over-elaborated, with too many passes enabling the make-shift Usuthu defence to snuff out any potential danger.

It was Ngwenya’s 32nd minute headed flick which should have lead to the opening goal as Dlamini’s pace forced Baloyi into a foul with the result that a penalty was awarded.

However, the KZN side were unable to profit from the spot kick as Baloyi saved from Tsweu Mokoro, who then blasted the rebound over the bar.

AmaZulu defender Siphiwe Mkonza had a decent chance eight minutes after the break, but was unable to react quickly enough to keep his close range shot on target.

Sundowns though began to find their rhythm, looking increasingly purposeful in attack and dominating ball possession, while AmaZulu lacked the same energy they had shown in the first 45 minutes.

Mokoena though should have out Downs ahead in the 56th minute when set up by Vilakazi, but he sent an angled shot across the goal-mouth.

The Pretoria side remained patient though, continuing to pass the ball around while probing for gaps.

And their persistence finally paid off in the 74th minute when Mokoena was put through on goal, doing the business with a delicate chip over Gindre and into goal off the underside of the goal.

Abdullah Ishaka looked to try and muster an immediate reply for Neil Tovey’s men, but his cracking long range drive was kept out by Baloyi.

Thabo Mabaso, Siboniso Gumede and Thami Sangweni also had opportunities, but they were only half chances and Baloyi was not called into action.

However, AmaZulu were not going to go down without a fight and they scored a dramatic 90th minute equaliser when Sandile Gumede headed home from close range after Downs were unable to deal with Mkhonza’s long throw-in, sending the game into extra time.

The Durban team survived an early scare in extra time when Mathew Pattison’s long range free kick crashed against the bar.

Apart from that though, it was Usuthu who were more threatening in extra time, although they were not able to create any clear-cut chances.

With both teams tiring from their efforts, a penalty shoot-out looked the only way to settle the tie.

Gindre gave AmaZulu the immediate advantage when he saved from Pattison, but Mkhonza restored parity when he blasted over.

Mokoena and Ishaka both slotted their efforts away before Gindre again put AmaZulu in front when he stopped Luvhengo Mungomeni’s effort.

Sandile Gumede and James Mayinga put their penalties into the back of net, leaving Mokoro to keep AmaZulu’s advantage in tact.

But it was not to be his side as his kick struck the upright.

Still the drama continued though – after Vuyo Mere and Dlamini both scored, Gindre again saved, this time from Vilakazi.

It was left to Litha Ngxabi to seal the game for Usuthu, and he did so, sending the ball past Baloyi’s outstretched hands.

AmaZulu: (4-4-2): Gindre, Biyela, Mkhonza, Chintu (Siboniso Gumede 46’), Ishaka; Mabaso, Sangweni, Sikhakane (Ngxabi 74’), Mokoro; Ngwenya (Sandile Gumede 80’), Dlamini.

Sundowns: (4-4-): Baloyi; Mere, Xulu, Mungomeni, Mayinga; Mmotong, Nyandoro (Ncaca 112’), Pattison, Mokoena; Vilakazi, Katongo (Phala 67’)

in many years i have been watching soccer, i have never seen such a dismall way of taking a penalty by Sundowns players. Mr Molotto i think its time to give Gareth Ncaca a chance to play and give Nyandoro a break.... its hurting to watch such well payed players displaying such football...

Good game. Pattison deserves to be in the bafana, he offers more to the game than Khuboni and Davids combined.

I certainly agree with those who are suggesting that there should be a curtain raiser match between KFC & PIECITY/SUNCLOWNS, so that our Calabash will be tested to its limit!!! Well done to the Students & Usuthu...

Swona Champ!: 2010-05-16 09:16

any way I axpected this results, if it was not for the ref, sundowns would have never played in this game, it should have been OP against Amazulu, guess there is a lot that the ref wont help with!

Vuvu : 2010-05-16 09:19

We will definately go and watch these 2 oldest teams in psl,no team is older than these 2,so it will be a blessing 4 the country when they open SC stadium,we will be there 2 show the whole world that in SA football is the no.1 sport.

Gavin Chitray : 2010-05-16 10:47

Pearl : 2010-05-16 13:52

Mpho

Why am i not surprised that you consoling urself by losing against a PSL team..darling an exit is an exit..just like PTA University, FC Cape Town will be remembered come next Nedbank Cup, so who lost against who is not worth an entry in the history books..ur pathetic ordinary team ended the season empty handed..after their rich owner splurged..thats more newsworthy

I feel sorry for Vuyo Mere who was counting on the Cup bonuses which Mr President was going to allocate. The poor Vuyo now has to work extra hours to pay Mambush all the credit due by him. Full Vuyo Mere story will be published on Monday.

Sean ask your mother or father they will tell you that Chiefs won the league back to back just before the PSL. You were not born yet; it is only your parents who can tell you that they won the league in the 17 years you are talking about. Before the PSL started Chiefs won the Coca Cola Championship which preceded the PSL in 95/96 season. Teams only played first round games and Chiefs were coached by Jeff Butler with players like David Modise, Thabo Mooki, Pollen Ndlanya and others. You must also realise that it is about Amazulu booting your team out of the Nedbank cup not about Chiefs. If you are competing with Chiefs then you are stupid because Chiefs have achieved more than your team achieved in the 12 years you are talking about. Africa club of the year and Africa Cup Winners Cup Champions in 2001/02 which your team is still dream to achieve which seem to be task too difficult to achieve like climbing Mount Everest.
