Pirates march on in Nedbank Cup

Posted: May 1 2010

Orlando Pirates beat Als Puk Tawana 4-0 at Orlando Stadium on Saturday night to advance to the quarter-final of the Nedbank Cup.

Thulasizwe Mbuyane got Pirates going with the first goal nine minutes in and Phenyo Mongala scored a second for Pirates in the 22nd minute. Further goals from Ndumiso Mabena on 34 minutes and the Man of the Match Dikgang Mabalane in first half stoppage time saw Pirates home.

Pirates could have bagged more goals in the second half but casual finishing saw them miss a host of chances which could have made the score line more glamorous.

Pirates went in search of an early goal to settle their nerves and came close to finding the game’s opener when Isaac Chansa’s angled lob from the edge of the Tawana 18-yard area flew over Marosha and hit the outside of his right hand upright.

Shortly thereafter a schoolboy mistake saw the visitors concede a corner and elementary marking by Tawana from the ninth minute set piece was to lead to the game’s opening goal. Josephy Kamwendo teed up the ball perfectly for Mbuyane, who crashed it past Marosha from close range to put Pirates a goal up.

Puk Tawana, needing to finding a way back into the game, resorted to a quick short passing game which culminated in them being able to open up space for striker Ramahuma to have a shot at goal, and his long range effort in the 13th minute had Senzo Meyiwa diving full length to make the stop.

Pirates spurned a number of chances, with Mabalane and Mbuyane missing the target from close range before managing to score a second. It came when Mbuyane was able to knock the ball through the legs of Tawana defender Letlabika to Mongala waiting unmarked to his left, who was able to side-foot the ball home from close range to put Pirates 2-0 up and in control of the game in the 22nd minute.

A third goal looked in the offing and it duly arrived in the 34th minute when a long ball sent Mabalane clear on the right; he in turn floated the ball perfectly on to the head of Mabena, who rose up and headed the ball downwards against the post. The ball hit Marosha, who tried to scoop it off the line, but the power of the header saw the ball go over for Pirates’ third goal.

In first half injury time Pirates went further ahead. Kamwendo rolled the ball forward to Mabalane who turned two defenders inside out before stealing a march on goal and knocking the ball wide of Marosha for goal number four.

Seven minutes into the second half Pirates could have surged further in front but Mabena was too casual when played into space by Mabalane; instead of driving the ball home he opted to chip the ball over Marosha, who jumped into the air to tip the ball over his post for a corner.

Pirates coach Ruud Krol was in a generous moo,d given that his team was cruising at 4-0 in the game and handed veteran midfielder Joseph Makhanya his first appearance for the Buccaneers this season, bringing him on for the destructive Mabalane in the 74th minute.

Pirates: Meyiwa, Makonese, Mabalane (Makhanya 74’), Jele, Manyisa, Kamwendo, Mongala (Nyanda 79’), Lekgwathi, Chansa, Mbuyane, Mabena (Fanteni 65’)

Tawana: Marosha, Letlabika (Nkhanyiso 64’), Mkhwanazi, Mapuru, Digoamaje, Sekgotho, Shongwe, Phetolo, Julies, Mkhize (Makudubela 64’), Ramahua (Nguzana 48’)

nka mo dira : 2010-05-02 06:46

jomo: u beat a vodacom league team and Sundowns is next?. Deep down u know that's not what u want. Dis has been sonono fc's problem in all these years that people tend to be over-ambitious. If ur playas cant score penalties what makes u think they'll score against minwana? How i wish we draw you so we beat de hell out of you? Soon some of u will be crying as always

EMMANUEL: 2010-05-02 06:50

sompisi : 2010-05-02 07:26

sicelo uyisilima mani nxa, who knocked out kaizer chiefs and platinum stars u mus worry about what yo team is doing cup game is full of suprises.

Thoko : 2010-05-02 08:22

the bugs played lyk professionals last night, giving the tawana boys respect and not underestimating them. On the other hand, the tawana boys got easily carried away and wer too elaborative on the ball. It can be argued that bugs eintleik went to that game as underdogs and so it follows that this wil go down as one of the shock results of the tonament. I wish Downs will approach their game with the right mentality.

Khosiqueen : now i can confirm Chiefs is suppoted by women and gays!!!
Khosiqueen : u just hold an empty vessel in you heard. you must think be fore comenting, oohh by the way that is too difficult for you to do, in you state of mind...

Chiefs were beaten by FC Cape town (the so call Vodacom team with u20 years old) one thing a Chiefs suppoters, they just cat close their stinking mouth. still early morning Chieps, go wash your sticking wouth with your smelling comments.

one thing I know about Pirates supporters, they only support Pirates but Chiefs one's, they support chiefs and any other team that plays against PIRATES. I wonder who they will be supporting in our Last 8.

Khosiqueen : my advise to you mama, go wash dishes and feed the kids. soccer is a men's sport it will take you years to understand it.

Mk Mjukutya: 2010-05-02 09:10

Wow, let me have this Chance to say; Congrats to Bhakajuju, now you really mean Business. Remember this is your last Chance of the Season. All the best buddy!!!

thabo: 2010-05-02 09:12

Baka"Juju": you Als Puk Tawana, Let me tell you before you are tjatjarag - this is a stadium of a revolutionary football club and you know nothing about the revolution.
So here you behave or else you jump. Don't laugh…

You don't come here with that white tendency, not here. You can do it somewhere else in Chloorkop, not here.
If you have got a tendency of undermining PSL teams even where you play, you are in the wrong place...

Tawana: But that's rubbish

Baka”JuJu”: You can go out.rubbish is what you have covered in that trouser
- that is rubbish.

You are a small boy you can't do anything. Go out.*******! Go out! You ****** Sundowns agent!

We cannot be allowed to be undermined in our own terrain, you can do that in your own home ground, but here, once you come in here - this is not a playground, this is Orlando Stadium. It's the home of the Ghosts of a revolutionary club which has liberated teams like Chiefs and cosmos…

It's not a beer-hall here, it's not a drunk beer-hall - cheap beer-hall, this. And you ask anybody including your father, Sundowns which tried to undermine this stadium what happened to them.

You are in our space and you are going to behave in a manner that is befitting of being in the Orlando Stadium.

If you feel you are offended by the removal of this Chiefs, by FC Cape Town, you are most welcome to walk, you are free to go.

Let's not push each other to a point where we will have to engage each other differently because we are not going to be undermined by young boys and then we say 'no, we need to restrain ourselves'.

Sundowns’ young brother, you need to ask the PSL teams - since you're not - what the Orlando Pirates is and what does the Orlando Stadium mean to them.

you ****** agent!!!

thabo: 2010-05-02 09:22

You was hpping to find happy people in these comment but to my amusmentthere lots of bitter chiefs and downs fans...

Tawana is a small and in-expirienced team, Media is so clue less about football suggesting that Tawana will cause an upset, because they eliminated Platinum. Platinum is a small team like them; what have they archieved, only promotion to PLS, thats it!

Pirates taught this minnors a lesson they won't forget and I hope our Chiefs watched and leant who it's done.

Pete: 2010-05-02 10:19

Why has Mabalane not even been considered for Bafana Bafana. Undoubtedly, there is no better right winger in the country . . . .pace and pin point crosses in every game. Benni could be a star again if he had to play with Dikgang.

Khosiqueen : 2010-05-02 12:48

Ao shame Thabo,did i touch a sensitive part,aah askies papa dnt cry hey,ths aint pers0nal bbyboy!truth is u beat them 17yr old boys,and u r celebratin as though u beat psl giants.

fufu: 2010-05-02 14:04

you realised that amakhozikasi fans are so hurt by lossing to a mvela team and know they sayin to us Bucceners that we sud not cellebrate coz this is asmall team Khosiqueen & Scello are busy sayin all these things.guys the bottom line is ur terrible team is OUT beten by a small team.so dont come here and try and make us feel bad abt our win,we showed that we a big team that wont be knocked out by teams tht dont even have a budget of R1m a yr.look i know ur hurting u hoped that we sud follow ur team that only wins with penalties. ppl like Khosiqueen are talking abt hittin a nerve no lady the nerve actualy hit u coz ur so bitter rite now its not funny.we won thats all there is nothing else and we won like a big team that we are we showed on the nite that we not here to play. also for ur info we got to where we are rite with 9 of our 1st team not being there.

Khosiqueen : 2010-05-03 07:16

Best teams are rated by their victories, and victories are rated by trophies..I still say"beating a development team" is hardly an achievement.if a guy came from europe and askd which is the best team in S.A u cnt say pierats coz u have got n0thng to show for it except beating s0me adolescent who can't even propose a gal, whom stil sleep in the same bed as their parents..hahaha

'The Controversial One': 2010-05-03 07:25

The Chickens will be coming home roosting....that is all I can say with this mickey mouse team beating an up and coming Vodacom unknown and still growing team. If you can look at that match, Amagundana won because this guys were commiting small teams error!

sEa RoBbErS R HeRe Do U fEeL iT! CHING CHING...

Maestro KC: 2010-05-03 08:52

I loved the way Pirates played in the first half. They did not make the same mistake as our team did of being over confident.

Mabalane was outstanding, his runs pure class and I am even tempted to say Pirates are now favorites if it was not for their shyness of winning trophies they could go all the way to win this one.

Khosiqueen, khosi elihle, I think it does not matter even if they played a adolescents. Those adolescents beat Denaledi and it was a shock as we were shocked by FC Cape Town.

Up to the Bucs for teaching Pukke students a lesson.
