AmaTuks reach last eight

Posted: Apr 25 2010

University of Pretoria are through to the Nedbank Cup last eight after knocking out Jomo Cosmos on Sunday at the Rand Stadium.

The Tshwane side won 4-2 on penalties and their goalkeeper Siya Mngoma was the hero, saving two spot-kicks to send Ezenkosi crashing out.

However, AmaTuks could have wrapped it up in regulation time had it not been for poor finishing. Mhlonishwa Dlamini’s shot was saved for a corner by Avril Phali in Cosmos’ goal in the second minute.

Cosmos hardly threatened the AmaTuks defence as the latter continued to pile on the pressure and came close in the 37th minute when Mduduzi Makwakwa was picked up by Phetego Maebela’s cross, but the former’s header went just wide of Phali’s right. It was 0-0 at the interval.

AmaTuks continued their dominance in the second stanza and it was no surprise when Makwakwa capitalized on a blunder by Phali to put AmaTuks ahead in the 55th minute. Phali spilled a cross and Makwakwa poked home, to give Cosmos a taste of what to expect in the First Division after Jomo Sono’s boys were relegated.

Ezenkosi threw caution to the wind when they made a double substitution when Bongani Theletsane replaced Katlego Loke and Bamuza Sono came in for Mfanafuthi Bhembe in the second half, but it did little to unsettle their opponents, who continued to dominate.

Sensing defeat, Cosmos brought on Themba Maringa who came on for Tornade Mongale in the 70th minute and Maringa repaid Sono’s faith when he ran in between the ball watching University of Pretoria defence to hit a low shot that Mngoma in AmaTuks’ goal knew too little about.

The two teams went to extra time and though AmaTuks had the upper hand in the 30 minutes they failed to capitalize on their dominance and the game went into penalties.

Penalty sequence: Mthombeni scores, Berthe scores, Maebela scores, Camara scores, Mngoma saved, Diarra saved, Rodrigues scores, Theletsane saved, Monare scores

It was 0-0 at the interval (halftime), read further and you will see that Tuks scored and Cosmos scored, making it 1-1 and went to penalties.
