Moroka Swallows walloped Vodacom League side Peace Lovers 4-0 to go through to the quarterfinals of the Nedbank Cup on Sunday.
The goals came from a Mark Haskins brace, and one each from Sandile Ndlovu and Cecil Oerson.
Peace Lovers, who campaign in the Vodacom League, were not given much of a chance before the game, but their attempt to proceed to the quarters can’t have been helped by the fact that their top-scorer, Bongo Baloyi, who has 28 League goals, was dropped from the team, apparently because of a lack of discipline.
The visitors started the game well, dominating the early proceedings, though it took them a while to get on the score-sheet.
The Birds piled on the pressure through set-pieces, and were rewarded for their persistence; their first two goals coming from corner-kicks.
Haskins opened the scoring in the 37th minute, when he rose to head in a corner from David Radebe.
Then, on the stroke of half-time, Ndlovu headed home, the corner this time taken by Haskins, to give Swallows a 2-0 lead into the break.
Haskins got a second in the 47th minute, after dribbling past the defenders and rifling a shot into the roof of the net.
Oerson made it 4-1 in the 60th minute, when he rounded his opponent and shot powerfully from inside the box with his left foot, giving Peace Lovers’ keeper no chance.
Swallows had a few more chances before the end of the game, but failed to convert them, Ndlovu being the chief culprit, along with Radebe and youngster Thulani Ngcepe.
The Vodacom League rookies came back with a chance of their own, with nine minutes to go, through David Mailula, but it was not to be and Swallows advance to the quarters.
