Orlando Pirates lose to Recreativo do Libolo of Angola

Bucs lose Champs League opener

Posted: Feb 19 2012

It was a disappointing result for Orlando Pirates, as they were beaten 3-1 by Recreativo do Libolo of Angola in their first CAF Champions League match.

The game was played at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Sunday.

Rooi Mahamutsa scored a consolation goal deep in injury time, but it was too little too late.

Maieco Domingos Henrique bagged a brace for Libolo, scoring in the 12th and 16th minute.

Henri Camara scored just after the hour mark to make it 3-0, before Mahamutsa scored in the final seconds.

The result will not please club chairman Irvin Khoza, who is known to be very keen for Bucs to take the Champions League once more.

The teams face each other again in the second leg on the weekend of March 2-4.

Scorers
Pirates: Rooi Mahamutsa (93)

Recreativo do Libolo: Maieco Domingos Henrique (12, 16), Henri Camara (62)

HOME TEAM: Orlando Pirates

AWAY TEAM: Recreativo do Libolo

This is not a surprising results in a sense that there's no shortcut to success.

I will always raise this issue of SA players not testing their strength earlier by using opportunities of being involved in junior teams.

If you work for a company with opportunities to learn as much as you can on the business formula, how will you grow if you fail to take advantage of that?

Bottom line is that SA teams neglect their development, hence even the present Pirates doesn't have their own developed but rather buy success.
This is a problem for all the teams in South Africa.

Then Pitso get blamed for a careless approach by soccer bosses.

Tzozo: 2012-02-19 19:09

HAhahahahahahahahahahhah......what a bad wknd for the Rats. First, Chiefs won by a huge score last nite and their kak team gets walloped big tym at home. What a good result.

Tzozo: 2012-02-19 19:17

I neva expected Chibuku FC to make any impact in Africa. I don't expect them to win or draw a single match. It serves them right though. This is what happens when a team has stupid fans who take everything for granted.

These people have been making so much noise about "conquering Africa" without looking how they won the lig. They won the lig by sheer luck yet most of them seriously believed they will win the African League and these dunderheads will never listen when you try to reason with them.

Losing at home to a team from Angola that is not in the same league as the TP Mazembes, AS Vita, Club Africain, Al Ahly, ZAmalek and Enyimba is just sh*it.Imagine what will happen when they go to Luanda. A 5-0 drubbing is on the cards. But knowing Chibuku fans, I'm sure they still believe they will "conquer Africa". Morons.

Totalfootball : 2012-02-19 19:37

Wow bad, very bad results.its suppose to be a wake up call.if they can score 3 against us here,we can even score more in their backyard.a big question is; do we have what it takes to do it.
When some of us question Leal tactical acumen, some section of Buccaneers criticise us. I pray that we will rise from the dead in Angola but my message is still the same.any human being can err, whatever it takes, and its not too late or too soon.Irvin must review roping in Leal,if he can fire the coach who took us to the last game of the final of ACL in Joe Frieklenton after drawing ASEC in 1995 it must not be hard to do it against Leal.we want the champions league with all our hearts and nothing should stop us!

@Totalfootball

Stop dreaming wena ! Rise from the dead in Angola ? Stop talking kak. Take it from me. You will neva rise from the dead. It's all over for Chibuku FC. What will happen is that you will get more drubbing when you get to Luanda.

When you finish embarrassing this country in Africa the lig will be out of your reach. You will be fighting to just make the Top 8. You can quote me on this.

I'm very happy with this result becos you Pirates fans are a bunch of morons and I'm sure your stupidity rubbed off on your players when they heard you declaring that " we gonna conquer Africa".

Good luck on you mission to win The Second Star as you have been singing since Hans Vonk won you the lig.

magebhula1937: 2012-02-19 19:46

@totalfootball; Well said you are quite right but this is soccer anything is possible, I remember Manning Rangers lost to Vaal Pros by 5-1 in Chatsworth and they won the 2nd leg by 5-0 away so be strong Buccaneer we'll bounce back. BUCCANEER TILL FAMILY BUSINESS WIN 3 TROPHIES IN ONE SEASON.

I can see since you finaly found your balz you are polluting the air with noise, come second leg you will be talking luck, fluke and so on. So just go and shut up now

SABELO : 2012-02-19 19:52

@Totalfootball, I agree with you, we are more than capable of scoring 3 goals or more as long as Leal gets his act together. UP THE BUCS no matter what

Tzozo: 2012-02-19 19:56

Final score 3-1.

CAn somebody please tell me why 3 is always Chibuku FC's losing score ? Just asking. 3-1 eish, the score holds sweet memories for me. That was the score during the First Massacre at FNB. The day was 25 November 2010. I remember it very well.

Thank you Libolo or Libido or whateva you are called for bringing back sweet memories !

To all of you who are happy about our loss, this is what i have to say to you-Pirates is one of the few teams in south africa with less foreign players playing for them and yet they have all psl trophies in their offices,so our loss can only mean that as south africans we are weak when it comes to football, all you othr team supporters let your team win something domestically before you start running your mouth.

i remember when Chiefs and Ajax won by 3 goals and celebrated like they have won the league. Pirates went 16 games unbeaten and reached all cup final which was historical. Pirates won all the trophies and the lague.

This season, Pirates has won 2 cups and will win the remaining 2 while every foll will celebrated 3x3.

TP : 2012-02-19 20:47

Rudolf Krol was mastermind.Unbelievably winning so many cups without an assistant coach.

Though I'm not bucs but praise must be given for the job well done by him.

However sanity must prevail South Africans, how can we celabrate a loss of a Mzansi team that was carrying the hopes of this beautiful country. The ILL of being divided has even reached our national teams. How can we expect to conquer anything when we lack unity amongst ourselves. Mzansi lets all unite for the great course of this country.

The falling star that was promised was delivered in one game… that comes when you build a team for the champions league… Whats gonna happen with all these cows now mr chairman… first game out of the champions league when you had such a big mouth with you stupid supporters that’s used to being third best… I guess leal will be fired come the end of the week… what a bunch of cows being out played by simple soccer… then you still say the psl is the best in Africa and amongst the best in the world… stop smoking wunga with you clown players…
Lol and I hope you and you bunch of clowns (supporters and players) will stop making noise…

Congratulations with you falling star as promised in record time….

I would like to send my deep appreciation to the UN Peacekeepers (ILibolo) for giving us a much needed peace in SA. I guess the rats understand that their championship was by sheer luck, and the brown envelopes that no one dared spoke about in fear of the mafia. I still remember the penalties that won them the league, and discredited tso Vilakazi for life...

To my team AKA 23 years Youth FC, please keep up the good work and proof on the next game we did not win by fluke (i.e. Cosmos game was no fluke draw as Sundoms resulted the same score).

DR MAMPURU: 2012-02-20 07:42

EISH......BEING A PIRATES FAN IS HARD AT THIS TIME, FIRST OF ALL ID LIKE TO CONGREADULATE THE FOOLISH LEAL FOR SELLING THIS GAME TO LIBOLO, WE WERE COMPLETELY OUT OF ORDER, WE PLAYED MORE LIKE CHIEFS, FIRST GOAL ANDILE JALI HAI, BUT AS FOR LEAL WHY DO YOUI KEEP ON STARTING WITH MABENA HEY, WHY DO YOU HATE RANTIE THIS MUCH, HE PLAYS LIKE A CHAMPION BUT YOU KEEP ON BENCHING HIM INSTEAD OF MABENA, YOU ARE STUPID COACH NO ONE CANT SEE THAT EVEN KHOZA IS JUST THAT HE IS ASHAMED THAT PEOPLE WOULD SAY HE MADE THE WRONG CHOICE, YOU ARE A WRONG SELECTION COACH GET THAT? YOU NEED TO LEAVE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

Ganadlha: 2012-02-20 07:47

Well we must accept we lost, but i wonder is ORLANDO PIRATES is not too heavy or BIG for Leal?cause i see he is strugling to get it wright or maybe our boys they tell them too as they are playing too casual. Now i really don't know or maybe is it Brasilian style?if is it then Leal must change his tactic before is too late. But to be fair enough this GUY fail @Swallows and Amazulu.i wonder what did Khoza see in him.well we will see if we can over come the score on our return macth.as for Bucs they are not the good travelers i know them well.well football has no there for.Anything is still possible.

now South Africa should realise how suicidal it is to not participate in CAF Champions leaque.......South Africa was participating back in the 1990's and that time Bafana Bafana were a very strong team and of late they have snubbed participationg in CAF Championship and Bafana Bafana is struggling like nobody's business..its lack of International exposure that hinders this..Countries that participate in Club International football dominates at AFCON Continental tournaments and until South Africa realises that the better. My country Botswana is starting to realise this factor, and teams are engaging in CAF Competitions now and results are coming!!This is just an advice to South African Football..Orlano Pierats was always going to lose agaisnt Angola side

Leal does not know wat he s doing, the man is just confused n cant even read the game.

BigJ_Okocha: 2012-02-20 08:32

This clearly shows that the psl is not as big as it is always claimed. PSL is one of the weakest leagues in Africa. Unless and until people come to terms with this fact they will always wanting to claim Zambia victory as theirs. Just look, the psl champion was beaten at home by Gaborone united of Botswana in 2010(2-2). The following year the psl champion supersport was beaten by Matlama of Lesotho (2-1). In 2012, the psl champion is beaten (3-0) at home by Angolan champion. Now just based on these facts do you still say psl is the strongest league in Africa. No. Actually is is by far the weakest league because its champion is always walloped by teams from Botsana, Lesotho and Angola.

If this is the case, then its going to be difficult to bounce back.

Rules: Let us not emulate Pitso n Saffa
Qualification ties are decided over two legs, with aggregate goals used to determine the winner. If the sides are level on aggregate after the second leg, the away goals rule is applied, and if still level, the tie proceeds directly to a penalty shootout (no extra time is played).[

it is not over yet, Pirates still have a game to play and they can change the scoreline to their advantage. But they'll have the pressure of the Boss together with the fans which maybe difficult to bear esp if you are playing in a foreign country with player with little international experience. Hopefully Benni will lead the pack with distinction unless his signing together with Boa... would not have served the purpose

SisterP: 2012-02-20 09:01

Is it true that the Angolan coach thanked the PSL for allowing a team from second division to participate in a champion’s league? He thought Pirates was a team from Mvela. He went on to say this was a good lesson for Angola. All teams irrespective of which division they are in they should be allowed to play in African competitions.

Now does it mean Chibuku FC has given up on your ambition to "conquer Africa" after just one game ? This can;t be true. Phela "conquering Africa" was your team's sole objective. Now you suddenly want to downgrade and go back to "conquering the PSL" so soon King, this is just unblievable.

But now you make the same mistake that makes me find your hammering by this Angolan team so sweet. Your statement "we will win everything left to play for" When will you Chubuku fans learn ? and when we celebrate your loss to foreign teams you accuse us of not being patriotic.

A statement like " i hope we can win everything left to play for in the PSL would make some sense". Today we are happy that you got hammered becos your fellow stupid supporters who are today in hiding were singing " We will conquer Africa no matter what" and "Second Star bla bla bla"

Jealous Down: 2012-02-20 09:43

The Chairman, Dr Khoza invested a lot of money in buying players. The mixture of young and those who are nearing pension. All was just trying to buy success in Africa, I am only not sure if he did his studies on a factor that should his team flops then his investments will count to nothing.

Being a Dr as he is, he should have learned from what the whole South Africa experienced when Mr Patrice Motsepe took our football by storm in a view to conquer Africa. Maybe the Dr wanted to prove that he is superior than Motsepe when it comes to football, but mother nature proved the Dr wrong that success can't be bought. No doubt this was the most costly risk that the Dr has taken since stealing Orlando Pirates.

I don't see Pirates coming back from 3-1 down in Angola, let alone coming back to win the league or even defending the Nedbank cup. They had all their hopes very high going to Africa and when it's cut very short like this it will also take a toll on the player's mental strengths. I can't imagine Leal fine tuning his players back to the domestic competitions. It's finish and klaar with "The Buccaneers"!

I rest!

I want to pose this question to Marawa's show tonite, Why are my fellow Chiefs fans and Flops fans happy for pierats to loose in Champions League? Are we gaining anything by pierats loss? If pierats have lost in a league or a cup i would understand but in an african champions which measures how strong is your domestic league and our representative have been humiliated at home now people are happy. its like peopl celebrating bafana failure to proceed in a world cup knock out or qualification to a Nation cup. Can we really justify that? it was proved once again over the weekend we as a whole nation we are no world beaters(the team Pierats have won four trophies in a row 2011 which suggested that they are strong team in the psl but what happens over the weekend suggested they have won those trophies agianst weaker opposition including our very own Cheifs and Downs. Do you guys get my point? Pierats partipation is not for their fans only but for SAFA, PSL and the nation so what that happens to pierats it represent what we have domestically. i am not happy for the results bcoz it reflects back on teams that pierats are competing with domestically......... my opinion agian dont execute me!!!!!!!!

Observant: 2012-02-20 10:03

As a football supporter I am disappointment that we're celebrating Pirates' loss in the Champions League. Much as I do not like this team, over the weekend, I took off my Kaizer Chiefs replica and jersey and was rooting for the Buccaneers. Hoping that they would go on to emulate that class of '95.

Why on earth would I support a team whose supporters would do anything to demean and disrespect my team at any opportunity given?

Well simple logic really, when Pirates won Champs league in 95, the following year Bafana went on to win AFCON, partly because Pirates, with their resilience showed that it is possible to succeed in Africa, irrespective of the hardships South African team face when they're up in Afrika. Also, seven years later, my beloved Amakhosi ventured into their own Afrikan Safari and not only did they bring back the Cup Winnders' Cup, they were also named Afrikan Club of the year.

My point here is that when South Afrikan teams succeed in continental champions, the entire country stands to benefit, right through to the senior national team. The Pirates class of '95 raised the standards, professional football has never been the same since that magical Jerry Skhosana goal in Abijan. With that, I refuse to celebrate the Buccaneers loss, even if they fall at their first hurdle, I still refuse to celebrate it, because their success in Afrika, is my success and will motivate other teams to want to achieve more on continental tournaments.

Mfana Wa Style: 2012-02-20 10:08

As for the game
It is not over until it is over, so to me we still in with a chance in the second leg coz all the goals we conceeded are all our mistakes which we can easily rectify.

As for Leal i think he needs to get his act together....good coaches don't go personal on their team selections. All pirates players are equal but it looks like there are those that are more equal than the others. This old man is wasting the team's money. Everytime he is talking about buying players and the team is supporting him with that but he uses and rotates the same players.

How many times did we have to tell him that Mabena is a talented player but does not deserve all the chances he is being given. How many times has Tokelo Rantie dissapointed him. Did he forget that Segolela is one of the main key players in this team and why do he want to treat him like shi*t.

This lineup will beat this Kaizer Libolo at tehri home ground....is either Leal go for it or go Brazil.

Dr_Prof_(Soccer Analyst_Anti-KickOff and Soccer Laduma): 2012-02-20 10:21

It is really going to a difficult African mountain for Pie_rats to climb on their second leg, with the following factors playing:

(a) The three 'advantageos' away goals scored by masters of footbal Libolo, means that for OP to win the game, they have to score three goals without conceding any goal, a very unlikely prospect

(b) the Libolo team is attack-minded, even after going three goals up, they kept on attacking as if they were drailing by those three goals, if a team leading by huge score margin, keeps on attacking away from home, what would stop it from doing the same in its own backyard?

(c) knowing the history of SA teams' dismal performance in Africa, it bears no element of hope that OP will reverse the scoreline to its favour

(d) the issue of aging workforce born testimony and ironically, having such a history pedigree of experience, they conceded such easy goals, this proves my long held belief that our players' international experience is 'futile' especially when it matters most.

(e) I believe that 'over-confidence' of Jali at times proves 'costly' , the first goal, he should have cleared off the ball at the danger zone which ultimately resulted in him losing control over the ball

(f) the notion that if Pie_rates wins the 'Champions League', then Bafana Bafana are likely to perform well in the next year's Afcon needs to be dispelled with serious contempt because: the team itself consist largely of an 'aged workforce' unlikely to be part of the team next year. For example, the back four are worried about their next life after retirement

(g) We must however not shy away from showering Black Leoprads with glittering praise for holding the SA flag fying at the moderate height while one nameless team next door had (un)successfully attached the second star but only on 'football forums, blogs and across the instant messings' before the kickoff

According to the news coming though, the SPCA has issued a 'warrant of arrest' against Mandla Masango and Lehlohonolo Majoro respectively for shooting the birds with slings while the latter shown the message "I do have b.a.l.l.s [to shoot the birds]

Then someone come and tells you that our league is the best in the continent,my foot. Supersport won the league thrice and they ventured into Africa, guess what happened, loose, loose, loose. we have the worst league in Africa, just overrated. We do not have our priorities right,Period.Yesterday's results reminds me of Peter Ndlovu and Sundowns, players winning trebles and the chairmain bringing someone to earn more and that someone recommends a friend to come along and they both walk away with + a million among them every month? What does this do to ManyisaJali,Mhlongo. In fact watch Tebogo Moloi leading a revolt

Ok gentlemen we have lost. Lets consider this as the worse that could happen to us in this competion, The more thing our champs need is our support, they didn't go out there with the intention of lossing the game. actualy they are feeling pain more as much as we do. there is no easy road for the winner, for us to be called champions again we have to rise up from this defeat and turn it to a victory. Actual in our next game it will be the time where our team has got opportunity to show their true colours. We have had a similar condition during MTN competion this year, our matches against Sundonws were very challenging although we didn't suffer any deafeat but we had to stretch ourselfs for both matches. this time we just need to use the same mentality and add little bit of accelaration in everything we do on the field. In this team guys I believe and yes I do believe. In everything you do you need something to trigger and tell u your a heading to the wrong direction. this was our trigger now we know we have suffered the deffeat and we understand how painfull it is. that is why we will never allow to fell that paina again we gonna go out there to win the next game at all cost.

Champ-Marapo: 2012-02-20 10:31

It is do or die in the second leg and i don't expect to hear any away game disadvantages, if we want to conqure africa we have to beat teams home and away. That chiefs Angolan team is in for helluva day at the office when we meet again. They should ask Kaizer Swallows or Kaizer Wits or even Mamelodi Chiefs what we are capable of doing when disperately need something.

With the class and experience of the likes of Bennie and Chansa we going to bring these Angolaans motaung family down. 3-0 will be the score.

Leal again has made us a laughing stock tjeeeeeerrrrrr!!!! Every where I go I'm being to told the same thing over and over of what an embarassment we are. It's being long since I felt like thanx to the useless madala coach. All the dreams and hope Khoza had for the club have gone up in smoke and soon the league title to will a distant memory

Pirates is too big for Leal...nxa!!!!

Win or Loose: 2012-02-20 10:39

these bugs fan they know how to critise chiefs but can't beat angolan team.
Le a nyanyisa.get your act together.
i wish these team could give you another hammering of 3 goals then you can shut up 4ever

BLK Ninja: 2012-02-20 10:40

Recreativo do Libolo bliksem us for real, i don't see out team coming back from that 1-3 drubbing. I don't want to put the blame on Leal only for the loss but the whole team including Dr Khoza. I'm the laughing stock @ work, Zebras & Sunclowns are having a field day with us today, i should have stayed @ home yazi...

The Legend: 2012-02-20 10:48

The results of the game do not reflect exactly which team was better, Pirates dominated the game though failed to score goals. The Angolians utilised their chances and won, Pirates can go out to Angola and win the game with more determination, for nothing is impossible when u do it with determintion.

We are a big team and its also normal to lose.

Lets lift our heads up and focus on the game against Platinum, If the guys believe they can redeem themselves in Angola, then lets support them.

As for Chiefs fans - Guys your problems are stil the same, Dont laugh at a team that has won 2 trophies this season, what have you got to show this season.

As for Sundowns fans - Guys your team is showing signs of choking once again, the gab is getting smaller.

LeCozy: 2012-02-20 11:32
