Guinea crush Botswana in Nations Cup

The Elephants romp to emphatic victory

Posted: Jan 28 2012

Guinea kept their hopes of qualifying to the last eight of the Africa Cup of Nations alive after sweeping past Botswana 6-1 in a thrilling performance in Franceville.

The Syli Nationale grabbed the lead early in the first-half through Sadio Diallo, who latched on to a cross from the left to finish past Modiri Marumo.

The southern African side restored parity briefly through Dipsy Selolwane, who scored from the spot after Naby Yattara brought down Jerome Ramatlhakwana trying to clear a poor back pass from Bobo Balde.

The equaliser was controversial however, after Yattara saved Selolwane's initial attempt but the referee ordered the spot kick to be retaken having adjudged that the keeper had come off his line before the shot was taken.

Sadio Diallo then took advantage of some slack defending by the Zebras to rifle another close range finish, before goals from Abdoul Camara and the impressive Ibrahima Traore gave Guinea a thoroughly deserved 4-1 lead at half-time.

The game was effectively over as a contest when Botswana substitute Patrick Motsepe was sent-off late in the first-half for a dangerous tackle on Pascal Feindouno.

The West Africans could - and should - have had a bigger lead early in the second-half after Feindouno's shot hit the crossbar and appeared to cross the line, but Guinea's claims for a goal were waved away by the referee.

Botswana's respite was short-lived however, with Mamadou Bah bagging the Syli Nationale's fifth from a deflected long range strike before substitute Naby Soumah completed the rout to give Guinea their biggest ever win at the African Cup of Nations.

The margin of defeat was a disappointment for Botswana, especially after their spirited display against tournament favourites Ghana in their opening match.

As for Guinea, they are very much alive in the tournament and will be following the late kick-off between Group D powerhouses Mali and Ghana with interest.

Eish what a massacre so for those who watched the game where did it all go wrong for Botswana, a team many of us hoped were going to create some surprises in this tournament?

Skepe Mketule: 2012-01-28 21:56

Bots must make this tournament as learning curve for next Afcon, and I will advice them to look for experienced coach from German.

Coming back to Bafana, if Pitso still believes is the best sorry for him if African f/ball is so high like this and I dont see BB qualifying for Brasil

These teams will be fighting for place:
Nigeria
Senegal
Mali
Guinea
Cameroon
Ghana
Egypt
Ivory Coast

only five teams must go

Skepe Mketule: 2012-01-28 21:59

Gents Ghana has strong muti how can this ball hit two posts

Clever boys: 2012-01-28 22:08

The Zebras completely outplayed in all departments the matter got worse when they went 10 man down I didn't see them coming back 6-1 is not a true reflection of the game. The diffence was all over the place .Actually it should have been more than that taking into consideration of many near misses by Bangura and company. Don't forget a disallowed cross bar drop down whi would stand if there was a goal line technology. I hope next week they will show why they represented Southern Africa.

Zebras will loose all matchs. Ghana for live

Itunes22: 2012-01-29 10:50

Its Sad that Guinea did not put 10 goals past these amatures! All they know is to kick the ball away from their penalty area. When they tried to change their game plan by attacking their opponents,of which its what they really suck at!they exposed themselves tactically & paid heavily for that.My last contribution on KO after that embarassing display by Botswana against Ghana,i said Guinea will Havest an amount of goals. There was less at stake in their 1st game so Ghana where made to play crap football by a crappy opponent who wore down the Ghanains by reckless body contacts throughout the first half.Botswana are not Afcon material, let alone those athletes who masquarade as footballers. You surely cant blame the coach, there simply is no talent in that bunch of individuals. The substitute Patrick Motsepe got away with it in their 1st game against Ghana as he was more agressive than he was in the 5 minutes he lasted.A career threatening tackle by Patrick Motsepe made little to salvage some pride,Mali will look for goals & Botswana will donate & it might come to haunt Ghana.

Tzozo: 2012-01-29 11:14

Iyoooo, shame, what a massacre ! As a proudly South African i feel bad about what happened to our neighbours. Botswana are there to represent Southern Africa because we, their BIG brothers failed to qualify. Now we see this massacre. Surely this will go down as the thrashing of the tournament and must be one of the heaviest in the history of Afcon.

This is what happens when you send out boys to do a man's job. Anyway we knew from the onset that Botswana are there just to add the numbers.

godfada: 2012-01-29 15:28

ooooh, pure botswana.next time lotla itse gore bolo ya tshamekiwa gae boiwe.play the ball dnt talk the ball.all they knw is to talk rubbish abt SA rather than focussing in their business.go home and watch how soccer is played when pls opens.ditsala

Both an: 2012-01-29 17:29

So Botswana could donate many goals like that and declined to donate many goals to Ghana Blackstar? What a massacre and humiliation be this? Please Botswana do not donate 10 goals to Mali.

AKL: 2012-01-29 19:46

This is simply a learning curve 4 US ZEBRAS i mean really hw many pple expected us to go thru 2 the quarters at 1st try..? Quoting from Cebo Manyaapelo "metlholo e hedile ka nako tsa bo Jeso!" Batswana must forget for another afcon because now they are dead and burried..........only diamond is left for them and they must fight for it amongst themselves

Tsholo: 2012-01-30 02:34

Botswana tried. Guys we hav to be realistic here. Don't just criticise. It's the first time Botz compete on an international tournament. There are so many factors that contributed to their defeat. The stage fright is amongst them. Rona mo Mzanzi we we are full of bitterness. We shouldn't be saying a thing cz we failed to qualify in the 1st place. So let Botswana learn from its mistake. They tried and the way I see it football ko Botz is growing way beyond here in SA. They manage to qualify for thz tournament with their little experienced coach. But here we always hire experienced coaches but we never make it. So guys stop criticising. Nna ke bona gore we are bitter for them. It was a learning curve for them. Let's support each other. The spirit of Ubuntu. Yaa gone itz a great loss bt we shouldn't b saying al thz cz itz their 1st tym.

Mookamedi: 2012-01-30 08:07

Fotsek wena mo South Africa yo o latlhegileng..o tsile go re kgakgafalela mo o bua Setswana le gone!!u see kgang ke gore Botswana football is going forward when South African football is going backwards!!your Banana Banana did not qualify, they only qualify by being hosts, and they're best known for participating at AFCON and coming back without a goal or a point!

Rasephetso: 2012-01-30 09:09

I say, blame it on the arrogance and idiocity of people as "Itunes" and "Tzozo"! An utter disgrace to Mandela's Rainbow Nation, and the whole human race!!!

While everyone is working to move forward, bone they are in other people's case trying to deter and indignify them. Enemies of progress. Shame. South African football's downward spiral will continue until bo-Itunes and Tzozo shut up about football!!!

Phantsha: 2012-01-30 09:10

@Itunes
Itunes???? i thnk "I" stands 4 idiot. You r the most stupid human being i hv evr heard of. Why do u project ur own fears, shortcumns, failures n anger on our boys? SA failed 2 qualify bt the Zebras did it on merit. we r amatuers, South Africans r pro's bt we did wht thy failed 2 do. Do u knw wht it means idiot? -U r a bigger failure. our defeat 2 Guinea was embarassn, we ddnt play at all lyk u said, bt remembr tht it has absolutely nothn 2 do with u....juz shut ur damn big mouth. Some SA fans ba makatsa ha mpe, hw can u brag ka win ya Guinea? whr is ur national pride? RSA has its own disgustn records, if u r a futbol persn juz look back. I dnt hv a problm with SA fans commentn bt i hv it whn thy write crap abt our team. I knw thr r those who support us n thy deserve a big THANK U n those who dnt, i got no problem with thm as long as thy kip their nasty comments abt us 2 their damn selves. Im stil a proud Motswana n a proud Zebras fan, say whtevr nonsense i dnt give a hoot!

Dodo: 2012-01-30 09:18

@ Itunes22, I think you seriously need to chill down. When we played our game of defending you lambsted us saying we are playing boring soccer, when we attack and get exposed you also complain. My guess you are really bitter that SA did not qualify. Please note that it is not our fault that you did. Saying we are not AFCON material is rather stupid, if we are not who is? For your own information for you to be AFCON material you have to qualify, of which the likes of SA, Egypt, Cameroon and Nigeria failed to do. If you cannot go over qualification hurdle just accept that you are not good enough. You are just like Daniel Amokachi who is so bitter that he failed to qualifier Nigeria as assisstant coach

And to all South Africans who claim that we are an embarrassment, look in you own backyard. In 2006 you failed to score at least a single goal or manage a draw despite the resources at your disposal. Now thats some record which we failed to beat! Those who say we will not earn a single point, I guess in this AFCON we wont be the only ones, Senegal the favourite went home without one

For us Batswana qualifying was good enough, we will compete next time.

To all other South Africans who supported us even though they did not believe we can make it, BIG UPS to you. As southern africans its good that we support each other as neighbours.

Eiah re batlile go bolawa ke batho 6-1, we were beaten by a stroger side. Tota Guinea yone e a re tshwenya. For the past 5 meetings before this game Guinea won 5-0 twice then 2-1, and the games I remember then very wel were durin 2006 world cup qualifiers when they beat us 4-0 away. Then we came to Gaborone in the national stadium. There was hope when Sox Molwantwa scored a scortcher, but immediately in the second hald the same Pascal Fendouno whose goal wasn't allowed cancelled that lead and immediately they scored with a long range shot which Tshelametse didn't saw.As for Motsepe that was harmful and he was lucky in the first game to walk away after his tackle on Muntari. But we must take this as a learning curve and play to our strength which is a defensive approach which qualified us to AFCON coz we were hammered when we tried to play an open game and exposed our defence. I am happy for Dipsy to have scored Botswana 's first ever goal at the AFCON finals, he deserved it for he has served his country whole hartedly. No matter what it still remains ZEBRAS FOR LIFE,the sky is blue for our beloved DIPITSE.

Salazani: 2012-01-30 09:35

3 teams reprsenting COSAFA was not very good. Zambia are through and we hope Angola will make it, and that will be 2 out of 8. For Botswana, all followers of football will agree that only teams with special inspiration would goal past the first round on their first attempt. This rarely happens as was the case with the MADIBA inspired Bafana BAfana team of 1996. The 1996 Bafana Bafana team was a great team and all the attention South Africa gets now is as a result of the exploits of that great team.

For my collegues from Botswana, you have a great team, work on it and the next Afcon is less than 12 months away. Dont go the usual way of dismantling the team, the experience gained in this tournerment will be very valuable.

As a Chipolopolo fan, I m now about to find my self in a situation were I choose between two COSAFA teams as my team is about to face Angola in the quarters. Well, neighbours, sorry but we will meet on the other side of the tourny. Consolation though is that as COSAFA, we are asured of representation upto the semis, coz atleast one will be there. Goolucky to the winner.

As a proudly South African, It was a dream come true to se Botswana qualifying for AFCON but ke ne ke sa solofela mas3pa a ke a boneng ka 2nd game ya bone, yes I didnt expect them to go the next stage but they played like amateurs(Afcon is not a Be moile league). they were not organized and were nervous.

I cant wait for Bafana to play against Zebras for Brazil 2014 qualifiers this would prove who is the best between the two.

@Phantsha;
You seriously think Botswana played well!statistics of what transpired on the pitch do not support your pathetic arguement.By the end of the tournament,Botswana without doubt is going be the worst team of the 2012 AFCON.Its just sad you expected miracles from a bunch of selected amatures,Obviously i might have been harsh to say the selected individuals did not deserve to go to the Afcon, but im offering no apology to anyone & you sir can eat my foot. How so sir that you assume that im a failure & i happen to have fears! It appears you are worse than me as a person,And stop these wild guesses that everyone who writes on this forum is South African.Your hate towards South Africans is absurd, nobody gives a hoot about your pathtic team if it plays domestic football, but if it enters the African Stage it becomes every African's business to comment. Its the only team that displayed utter rubbish so it deserves no mercy from any football fan.@DODO;Your team will never qualify again,i see no repeat of this luck. How do you come to terms with a team that qualifies 11 months ahead of the rest of the teams, that very same team gets all the time in the world to fine tune its athletes well ahead of the rest & that very same team parades horrible football when half of the world is watching!Yuck!Bring them home to milk cows & goats, perhaps thats what they are good at.

Phantsha: 2012-01-31 14:51

i thnk we r not on the same page here. I nevr said we played well. let me quote frm my 1st post "our loss to Guinea was embrassing." am i nt agreeing with u? let me repeat ths; u r projectn ur fears, failures and shortcumns on our team. By tht i mean tht u r focusing on problems our team do instead of focusing on bafana bafana coz thts ur business. Miracles refers to pple lyk u, who hv a lot of tym to waste talkn crap abt othr pple 's businesses. O A MAKATSA, SO O MOTLHOLO

meg7113: 2012-02-01 11:05

@ AKL I guess you are a motswana. Your comment about southern Africa nations uniting instead of fighting is true. But you are a hypocrite and have spoiled the party by under-rating Zambia against Tunisia. Fine, for the first time you had beaten Tunisia but that do not make you superior to Zambia. If thats how you planned your games I now understand why you got hammered. Look we shall live to remember 6-1. You were the first to qualify and the first to allow 6 goals. As for Tunisia we will hammer them next time we meet. AKL I guess you will bury yourself in the sand when Zambia celebrates. Mark my words, this AFCON cup is coming to Southern Africa, to Zambia to be precise. Borogo
