Bafana ease past Niger

Posted: Sep 4 2010

Pitso Mosimane won his first competitive game in charge of Bafana Bafana with a comfortable 2-0 victory against Niger at Mbombela Stadium, but they may be left to rue a succession of missed chances.

The hosts scored both their goals in the first half – through Katlego Mphela and Bernard Parker.

Bafana were certainly the dominant team in the opening 45 minutes as they controlled the midfield battle and dictated the possession stakes.

The home side attacked from the first whistle, with Parker almost opening the scoring in the third minute when he met the end of a right wing cross, but his header was brilliantly saved by Daouda Kassali.

Still, Bafana only had to wait another nine minutes before they did take the lead through the dangerous Mphela.

The goal was created by Steven Pienaar, who won the ball in midfield and then played Mphela through on goal with just the keeper to beat. The Sundowns striker showed good composure to chip the goalie and give his side the lead.

The only chance on goal for Niger in the first half came in the 18th minute when Moussa Maazou tested Bafana’s Itumeleng Khune from about 25 yards out, but it was a comfortable save.

Mphela nearly doubled his side’s lead in the 36th minute when he showed strength to win the ball in midfield and proceeded to beat one defender and again left himself with just the keeper to beat. This time, however, Kassali produced a good save by spreading himself well to block the shot.

South Africa continued to press forward and did eventually find their second goal three minutes into added time of the first half.

Anele Ngcongca drove down the right flank, beating one defender before supplying a teasing cross into the 18-yard area. Parker then did brilliantly in the middle of the box, stopping in his tracks and producing an acrobatic scissor-kick to fire the ball home.

The second half continued where the first left off as Bafana were unrelenting in attack and went in search of their third goal.

And they nearly found it in the 55th minute. Pienaar was at the thick of the action again this time supplying a through ball for Parker, but he failed to beat the goalie, who produced a good low save to his right.

It was almost the exact same move three minutes later, this time Pienaar playing Siphiwe Tshabalala through on goal, but he too squandered a golden chance, chipping the ball over the crossbar.

Pienaar was the heart of the South African team on the night as he was the source of great playmaking. He also nearly found his name on the score sheet in the 72nd minute, but Kassali was again at his best, diving full stretch to his right to tip away an 18-yard shot.

Bafana continued to press forward but try as they might the South African team could not find their third goal as the game finished 2-0 in their favour.

It was a well deserved victory for South Africa as Niger were virtual spectators for the entire 90 minutes. Still, Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane will be delighted with the three points and a convincing win.

HOME TEAM: South Africa

AWAY TEAM: Niger

ON the seriuos note guys. A soccer star must the looks n the style (hot looks) ie 16v, tebza moloi, pinaar etc. What is the name of teko's hair style? Is it also done at a salon or under morula tree? What about ditedu? A star need to be classy if you know what i mean. By the look of things, Pitso knows what i'm talking about

LeKhosi: 2010-09-04 23:03

Well done to the boys, though I am disappointed hore they didn't score enuf goals as they cud have.
I like wat Pitso is doing ka Teko, make him fight for his position.
Pienaar is doing wel for us so far.
Tivani must hv been happy to c his boyfriend showboating while the rest of team is aiming for goals.

muziwakhe: 2010-09-04 23:04

i am nt happy with the score because we were supposed 2 score many goals as possible to put ourself on advantage stages when maybe we become equal with our opponents wil hv the chance. But well done continue from there.

potsiso1 : 2010-09-04 23:05

tht team deserved mpama einklik n shabba should b the looser of the nyt, with all those chances he missed, teko should consider bng a professional freestyla/ ball juggla, wht he ws doin isn't necessary in crus matches. Anyway a win is the best result.

Denny: 2010-09-04 23:06

Some people like Di 'E (whatever that is), are so obsessed with Teko. U must be gay to worry about how a soccer player looks like rather than how he plays.

Well done Bafana...

Di \'E\' : 2010-09-04 23:12

dat goalie was not suppose 2allow de ball 2go out. Sometimes we don't need scary hairstyle in de pitch

Di \'E\' : 2010-09-05 05:21

shakira, what's de best way of cutting/making dat scary hairstyle(moron or whatever u call it)? What r they using between a broken bottle and okapi

Wonder : 2010-09-05 06:24

Mphela should have scored a hatrick but scored only 1, Parker should have scored a hatrick but also scored 1, Shabba was the worst culprit as he also shud have scored a hatrick but scored 0. Im stil not sure why Pitso introduced Yeye, he made unnecessary back passes and nearly cost us with his first back pass. I stil maintain that Teko is a very good player, he showed it whenever he played it simple, but he needs a total change of attitude if he is to get back to his usual best. Pienaar,Khuboni and Sibaya where once again brilliant, Pienaar is our best!

jali: 2010-09-05 06:39

Some people including the so called ****yst are talking about us fighting for the second spot in this group, the lack of self belief from so many of us makes me fear it might just pemeate to the players. What kind of a country expect and aspire to be second best?Trust in our ability and hunger to achieve big things is what we should be drumming into everyone's head.

Wonder : 2010-09-05 06:52

jongihlanga you are correct, i could not believe myself when i heard them commenting yesterday, Bafana is good enough, we only need to believe!

All psl trophies : 2010-09-05 07:02

The introduction of Yeye changed the complexion of the game, khuboni was no where 2b found

All psl trophies : 2010-09-05 07:08

Pitso shud remind shaba that he doesn't own that left half position.but klate is nt a national team material

sean : 2010-09-05 07:10

Thanks Wonder & Jongihlanga for commenting on the soccer. It's sickens me to read all these insults instead of football intellect. Wena Zolisa bear in mind that 'asiphelelanga' on this blog.

khulile : 2010-09-05 07:44

Shapa bafana shapa. Tshabalala, pienar, khuboni, sibaya are enjoying them selves there bcoz there is no teko who always do unnecessery thinks. He must be on bench all the time.

Well done khune being no.1 keeper for bafana
Khune, shapa any yeye they pleyed. How many pie rates players are in the squad? And how many play? If so how many minutes?

khulile : 2010-09-05 07:49

Domenic isaacs, masango, yende and masinamela are kncking the doors of bafana while khune, shapa, yeye and sthe ngcobo are there and they are playing unlike the other team's players are on bench

khulile : 2010-09-05 07:57

Shakira please don't love the way u do, he is not gay lyk u.go and love 3 sums, somizi and and ur boyfriend. Leave teko alone he don't love u, actual he don't even know u. We are tired of u with ur gaynes.

a job well done by bafana...but this sibaya guy, 90% of his moves are back passing rather than to move forward. he seems to run out of ideas whenever he has to move forward and create a play by good passing...

LeKhosi: 2010-09-05 10:06

I am not going entertain another any of Teko's groupies or stoop to their level of stupidity or Insults.I will just talk soccer.
Khune: always number 1, with a good cover in Mazinyo Joseph.
Defence: very solid thanks. No place for Gaxa.
Midfield, Shabba ws not @ his best but I liked the way he interchanged position with schillo.Pitso cud have introducd Yeye early, we needed to attack more early on.The intro of Yeye resultd to a lot of scoring chances.Teko please lets keep it simple for now, this is not kasie soccer, u can do that ko Pie-rats were goals are not important.PIENAAR, now the groupies know why Tekoloshi is on the bench, Dankie ma se kind.
Strikers: Well done Pitso for playing with two strikers. The positive is that they both scored, though they cud have done beta.

Niger were useless and we should have scored may more goals which may come to haunt us later in the competition. Pitso must bring back Benni to help Mpela with his sharpness. Benni scored 4 against Namibia and always provided to be supersharp. Mpela shows great promise and must be nurtured to be one of our greats. His partnership with Parker could be a masterstroke by the coach as they both can score good goals.
