National team coach Shakes Mashaba has picked his 23-man squad to face Gambia in Bafana Bafana’s crucial upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in June.
In goal, Soweto giants duo Itumeleng Khune and Brighton Mhlongo have been called up, alongside regular inclusion Jackson Mabokgwane, with experienced shot-stopper Moeneeb Josephs snubbed despite a solid season for Bidvest Wits.
Chippa United defender Diamond Thopola receives a maiden call up, with in-form Mamelodi Sundowns duo Tebogo Langerman and Rama Mphahlele roped in.
Dean Furman returns to the fold in midfield along with in-form Keagan Dolly who finally gets his chance, while Polokwane City’s red-hot striker Thobani Mncwango has been called up alongside Ndumiso Mabena, Thamsanqa Gabuza and Bidvest Wits’ Sibusiso Vilakazi.
There is no room for Ajax Cape Town forward Prince Nxumalo, while FC Twente midfielder Kamohelo Mokotjo was also left out.
The South African squad will assemble on 29 May before jetting out to Gambia three days later ahead of the match taking place on Saturday, 4 June at the Independence Stadium in Bakau.
Kick-off is at 17h00 local time (19h00 SA Time).
South Africa currently sit third after four matches played in Group M, one point above opponents Gambia and five points behind group leaders Cameroon, with just two qualifiers left to play.
Following their encounter against Gambia, Mashaba’s charges will then play a friendly on 7 June against a yet-to-be-confirmed opponent.
