A total of 17 players from South African clubs are expected to be named by tonight's deadline for the final squads for the upcoming African Nations Cup.

Botswana have already named their 23-man squad and headed off to Cameroon yesterday (Tuesday) for a final training camp with four players from the Premiership and two from the National First Division.

Zambia will finalise their squad after their practice match this afternoon (Wedneday) with Bafana Bafana at the Rand Stadium but it is likely all eight PSL-based players will be going in Herve Renard's squad.

A further four players who had previously been on the books of South African clubs, including ex-PSL top scorers James Chamanga and Chris Katongo, are certain to be selected along with Evans Kangwa, the exciting youngster who Orlando Pirates have secretly signed for next season.

Niger, who finished ahead of a bungling Bafana Bafana in the qualifying group, will take two recent recruits to the PSL – Mohamed Chicoto of Platinum Stars and Pirates' back-up forward Boubacar Talatou – with them to Equatorial Guinea and Gabon. Niger are making their debut at the tournament, as is the case with the Zebras of Botswana.

Mali have already named tough-as-teak defender Ousmane Berthe in their preliminary squad but it is not sure whether the Jomo Cosmos centre back will make the final cut.

He will spend the day anxiously waiting to learn whether Mali coach Alain Giresse has picked him.

Any country that fails to make the deadline will be fined around R20 000. If the team list is still not in by Saturday, the errant country will be allowed to register only 20 players instead of 23 for the tournament.

On the replacement of injured players, the Confederation of African Football rules state that in the event of a serious injury, a listed player may be replaced 24 hours before kick off of his team's first match.

But this is subject to approval by the CAF Medical Committee after receiving a detailed medical assessment.

Any team that suffers injury after their first game at the tournament cannot replace the player.
