The PSL will have representation in four countries at the Africa Cup of Nations finals – due to start in a fortnight – despite Bafana Bafana’s failure to qualify for the continent’s premier football competition.

Neighbours Botswana, along with COSAFA region representatives Zambia, will be joined by Niger and Mali as the four countries with PSL players in their respective squads.

Zambia is in Group A, Niger in Group C, while Botswana and Mali are in Group D.

The actual number of players plying their trade in South Africa could stand at 15 if none of the players that are already in camp with their respective countries pick up knocks or are dropped.

Chipolopolo has the biggest representation with eight PSL players guaranteed of their places in the flight to Equatorial Guinea.

The eight Zambians are Kennedy Mweene and Noah Chivuta (both Free State Stars), Kampamba Chintu (Bidvest Wits), Joseph Musonda and Collins Mbesuma (Golden Arrows), Davies Nkausu (SuperSport United), Isaac Chansa (Orlando Pirates) and Clifford Mulenga of Bloemfontein Celtic.

Several other players in the Zambian squad have previously played in the PSL; among them the Katongo brothers Felix and Chris, as well as Kalililo Kakonje.

Nations Cup debutants Botswana have Mogogi Gabonamong, Dipsy Selolwane (both SuperSport United), Phenyo Mongala (Celtic) and Boitumelo Mafoko of Santos. Veteran goalkeeper Modiri Marumo plays for Bay United in the First Division.

Jomo Cosmos defender Ousmane Berthe will turn out for Mali.

Niger – who went through at the expense of Bafana – will have Boubacar Talatou of Orlando Pirates and Platinum Stars defender Mohamed Chicoto.

The other countries that have the bulk of the foreign players in the PSL like Zimbabwe, Malawi, Namibia and Nigeria all failed to qualify for the Nations Cup finals, which will again be dominated by players from the French leagues.
