Germany v England: Old rivalry renewed

Saturday's 2010 FIFA World Cup Last 16 clash between Germany and England in Bloemfontein will be another installment in what is one of the great rivalries in international sport.
The pair have a history off the pitch of course, with the First and Second World Wars that were fought between Germany and England, amongst others, adding to the feeling of animosity.
The first match between the pair was played in 1930 and finished 3-3 in Berlin, after which England went on a run of seven straight wins before the Germans claimed their first success in 1968 with a 1-0 win in Hanover.
It was some sort of revenge for the Germans, who two years earlier had been controversially beaten 4-2 in the final of the 1966 Fifa World Cup as Geoff Hurst became the first and only man to score a hat-trick in the championship decider.
The Germans then had their own spell of dominance, in a side led by the great Franz Beckenbauer, and England won just one of the next seven matches spanning a 17-year period.
Germany also won 3-2 at the 1970 Fifa World Cup in Mexico, while the teams played to a 0-0 draw in the 1982 finals in Spain.
Two of the most famous meetings between the sides were both won on penalties by Germany, when they went on to claim international tournaments.
Lothar Matthaus and his side beat Paul Gascoigne and England in the semifinals of the 1990 Fifa World Cup in Italy, claiming a 4-3 shoot-out win after the teams had been level at 1-1.
Then, six years later, they repeated the feat in the semifinals if the European Championships that England hosted. Again the scoreline was 1-1, but this time Germany triumphed 6-5 on spot-kicks, and would go on to lift the crown.
England did get their revenge with a 1-0 win at the 2000 European Championships, while they also managed a 5-1 success in a 2002 Fifa World Cup qualifier in Munich, a result which still seems incredible given the Germans' utter dominance at home.
In fact, England have won three of the previous five meetings, including the very last, a 2-1 success in a friendly international in Berlin in 2008. Centre-backs Matthew Upson and John Terry scored for England that day, and could pair up again in Saturday's encounter.
