KICK OFF rates the Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs players’ performances after the 137th Derby finished goalless at the Orlando Stadium.
ORLANDO PIRATES:
6 Moeneeb Josephs – Blocks Nale’s low shot inside the first five minutes in a one-one situation, but was well-beaten by Nhleko’s shot which hits the post in the last minutes of the game.
6 Rooi Mahamutsa – Tshabalala was in his pocket for the better part of the first stanza, until the Bafana winger was taken off.
6 Lucky Lekgwathi – Chiefs found gaps on his side, especially in the first half. He had no chance to overlap.
7 Lucas Thwala – Made some very good tackles when covering for Lekgwathi, when the latter was beaten on the right and Chiefs’ forwards definitely felt his presence as he cleared everything that came his way.
7 Zvenyika Makonese – Except for his yellow card for fouling Nale in the second half, he couldn’t put a foot wrong. Nothing could get past him for the better part of the game, a picture of composure.
*8 Andile Jali – Bossed the midfield early on and made the likes of Nengomasha look ordinary. He was deservedly named the man of the match.
5 Dikgang Mabalane – You could see he’s been off-form, just one cross the whole first half and it did little to trouble Chiefs’ defence. His shot from the left wing hit the side-netting in the 18th minute, but it was too weak to beat any keeper, let alone Khune.
5 Isaac Chansa – He was a passenger for the better part of the game and perhaps a big surprise that Krol didn’t take him out. His ball control was poor for his standard.
4 Bennett Chenene – Sometimes you will even forget he was there, until he came off in the 71st minute due to injury. Did little to trouble Tau.
4 Katlego Mashego – The man never had a decent shot at goal for the whole game. Perhaps he bit off more that he could chew when he said he was going to score. In the seventh minute he set-up Mbuyane twice with defence splitting passes, but the latter hesitated and Khune came out to collect.
4 Thulasizwe Mbuyane – Full of running early on, but is too slow when Mashego sets him up on two occasions and not much is seen of him since then.
5 Gert Schalkwyk – Replaces the injured Bennett Chenene in the 71st minute and has one very week shot, which Khune easily saves. He certainly wasn’t a nightmare for his former team.
KAIZER CHIEFS:
*8 Itumeleng Khune – Makes a brilliant save tipping over Thwala’s powerful header in the 61st minute. Was alert at all times.
7 Jimmy Tau – The Amakhosi skipper led by example, containing Chenene nicely until the latter got injured. Didn’t go forward enough, though.
5 Punch Masenamela – Did well defensively, but his crosses when confronted by Mahamutsa were erratic.
6 Thomas Sweswe – He communicated well with his partners in defence, but earns himself a yellow card in the second half for a foul on Mabalane on the edge of the box and was lucky Bucs failed to use the opportunity from the set piece.
7 Valery Nahayo – Solid at the back and bottles Mashego for the better part of the game. Didn’t panic when he was under pressure.
5 Tinashe Nengomasha – Didn’t boss the midfield like he normally does as Jali was dictating terms.
4 Josta Dladla – Not much was seen of him in the first half and no surprise as he is replaced by Masango at the start of the second half.
6 Reneilwe Letsholonyane – ‘Yeye’ was not effective going forward and is not seen taking a shot at goal like he would usually do. But he tried his best in midfield.
5 Siphiwe Tshabalala – Like Dladla, he was a passenger and failed to deliver a cross in the first half. Didn’t combine well with Masenamela either and Vermezovic sees this, taking him out in the 65th minute. The coach had to defend him after the game, saying “I don’t believe Tshabalala is saving himself for the World Cup” after this claim was made.
6 Abia Nale – First touch was impressive in the first half and got the crowd excited at times, but didn’t come close to scoring a goal.
6 Knowledge Musona – Failed to finish off an inviting low cross from Nale on the stroke of halftime and fails to connect Masenamela’s pinpoint cross from the left in the dying stages of the game. It was simply not his day.
5 Mandla Masango – Came on for Josta Dladla at halftime and didn’t provide anything different to what Dladla was doing.
6 Nkosinathi Nhleko – Replaces Siphiwe Tshabalala in the 65th minute and Bucs’ defence started crumbling as he bulldozed them. He was unlucky not to get a winner in the dying stages as his shot hit the post with Josephs well-beaten. Maybe Chiefs could have won had he started.
