Africa for World Cup? Not yet …

Posted: 2009-12-02 20:29

The greats of African football have been lining up to give their take on what could possibly happen in South Africa 2010 and everywhere the verdict seems to be the same: 2010 is the year something special could happen, and that something special, we are told, will be an African side going all the way to be crowned world champions.

Abedi Ayew Pele says: “This is our best chance of lifting the trophy because if you study the history of the World Cup, Brazil are the only team to win it outside their continent. We definitely will have one African team that goes far and when I say goes far, I mean as far as raising the trophy. When I make this prediction people laugh, but I believe it.

“When I told football officials that African champions Egypt would defeat world champions Italy during the Confederations Cup this year they all laughed. It happened and they had to admit I was right.”

Then there is Ivorian international Yaya Toure, who is convinced his country, alongside Ghana and Cameroon, could shake the foundation of the World Cup.

“People see us as the best team in Africa; that is pressure on its own. I don’t really want to say we will win the World Cup, but our intentions obviously are to win the competition. But I think we should take it one step at a time.

“The media will always have its favourites; we don’t have to base our thinking and our belief on that. We know what we can do, we know what we can achieve. We have been gelling well. In 2006 we had the hunger, but we lacked experience.

“Another thing is we were given a tough group. We don’t know who will be our opponents this time around, but I guess that is something we cannot control. We will have to play against whoever our opponents turn out to be.”

One BBC writter wrote in eloquent terms recently about how the Black Stars will be the best hope of the continent. So in many ways it is not just Africans blowing up talk of an African World Cup win, but the world at large.

Yet I am a skeptic – not because I am no believer in the Black Stars or the African cause, but because I just don’t think there is the playing capacity and the depth required to do so. I say this fully aware of the tremendous progress the continent has made at the World Cup since the days when the then Zaire were making a mockery of the rest of the continent in 1974.

Since then Cameroon have gone on to reach the quarterfinals, beating eventual finalists Argentina on the way.

Senegal then reached the last eight too, but it was Turkey that got the better of them. And both Ghana and Nigeria in taking the likes of Italy and Brazil close in second round meetings have demonstrated that along the line this continent will come good.

But those same games that give reason for hope also provide the pointers for realism. In 1990 Cameroon should have taken out England, and not merely because the referee was biased. For long spells they led, had chances to close the game out and were then caught in the period when most African teams are vulnerable and susceptible to breakdown. It cost them a place in history.

In 2002, can anyone still believe that regardless of how good Turkey were, they beat a Senegal side who had thrilled with their mix of pass, go and powerful football? They lost that quarterfinal meeting before they fell too much in love with the mood on the continent. With wild celebrations in Dakar and beyond, the players partied instead of preparing for Turkey. And on the field the Turks proved they were more up for it.

In 1994, Nigeria suffered the spectacular lapse in concentration. They had Italy on their pulse and yet, instead of burying them, they were doing what we call agoro.

That may have changed and with years of experience in Europe, many of the players will go to South Africa with a better mentality. They will have no fear of the opposition. They will come up against players they meet and do better than on a weekly basis.

But the depth to beat the likes of Brazil, Italy, Germany and Argentina in a long haul tournament is just not there.

The Ivory Coast have been touted as potentially the best prospect from Africa. That is informed largely by the good collection of star players they have. Didier Drogba can win a game on his own. Powerful, talented and brutally strong in the mind, he is the goal-machine Ghana’s Black Stars don’t have.

The support cast will include Yaya Toure in midfield. Then there is his brother Kolo at centreback, and the likes of Solomon Kalou, who have all shown on the big stages that they can stand up to the best.

But the Ivorians leak goals. Alongside Toure will be Abdoulaye Meite. Not frightening enough. Their goalkeeping has been suspect for years. And no matter howeasilythe names of the Ivorians names roll off the tongue, they don’t match up to the quality that Italy, Argentina, Brazil, Spain and Argentina will come up with.

The other country from the continent touted as potential winners are Ghana. And I love that the continent believes in us. I believe in the Black Stars. I swear by them basically because I make a good living when they do well.

But while Asamoah Gyan and Matthew Amoah may be scoring, they don’t look like the strike-force that will shake the world. The midfield continues to be superbly good, but as we discovered in Germany 2006, you need more than world-class midfielders to thrive in a tournament of the nature of the World Cup.

I would love to see Ghana or another African team win the World Cup. And in South Africa we should hopefully do much better than the continent has in the past.

But I fear that an Ivory Coast side who has failed badly to live up to favourites status in the Nations Cup twice and not advanced beyond the group stages will not do it.

When I look at Ghana I don’t see the depth required to win the tournament. I see the determination, but not the penalty box fox, the super sub, or the strength to go all the way, no matter how much I want it to happen.

And even though in Samuel Eto’o Cameroon will have a world-class striker, and in Achille Emana a fantastic midfielder, they have proven porous at the back, especially if they insist on sticking by Rigobert Song.

As for Nigeria, the manner of their struggle in qualifying says everything. And while the vuvuzela will blur so loud to urge South Africa on, the bare truth is that on the field they are not a force to be reckoned with. There is so much made in South Africa about running Brazil and Spain close in the Confederations Cup, but the truth is there only win came against New Zealand.

So we will go and enjoy the warmth of South Africa. When Ghana are playing I will struggle to be a journalist as I did in Germany almost in tears as the national anthem blurred out of the stadium loudspeakers at a World Cup for the first time.

But even that die-hard Ghanaian streak in me does not convince me we can do what we did in Egypt in South Africa. It may be the first World Cup on African soil, but it is highly unlikely to be the first World Cup win by an African team.

hehehehe pls leave my Ghanian brother alone afterall he is entitled to his opinions, however I must say Nigeria has the biggest talents in Africa obviuosly bcos of our population but not the best teams at the moment because of bad management. In my opinion, Cameroon is presently the best. If and if Nigeria can get thier acts together and get a technical superior management now I think they will be one of teams to beat.

SOUTH AFRICA IT'S POSSIBLE AFRICA!!!

Deni: 2009-12-03 01:56

Well, Hehehe has said it all. The admission of Michael at Odjei says the mindset of an average Ghanaian. That mindset is one of inferiority complex. Otherwise, how else will anyone see the Ivory Coast as outsiders to lift the world cup? What depth has Italy got over the Ivory Coast?
And why do Michael ati Odjei believe that Africa's hope hand on Ivory Coast, Ghana and Cameroon. How are this countries better than Nigeria. On FIFA ranking, Nigeria is higher than Ghana. Nigeria qualified for the world cup without losing a match. That they struggled to qualify tells you that African teams have improved. There is no easy team. Afterall, Cameroun struggled like Nigeria to qualify and Egypt that beat a world class Ivory Coast by about 4 goals, and Cameroon to the last African Nations cup failed to qualify.
Putting Nigeria and Ghana side by side, do Ghanaian footballers do better than the Nigerian footballers in Europe? Accepted that Michael Essien and Sule Muntari are world class, both of them won’t play for the remaining eleven average Ghanaian players. Nigeria of course has more depth than Ghana in terms of quality, has more players doing well than Ghana and Cameroon. So what are the criteria that you, Michael Odjei used in ranking Ghana above Nigeria when FIFA ranking suggest Nigeria as being better than Ghana?

James: 2009-12-03 11:54

I believe that an African team will do it for us and must admit that I was saddened by the fact that Egypt was not going to be here.

I am not going to be like my white South African colleagues and write off the possibility that an African team can win the cup. I believe that Africa will do us proud especially on African soil, quality teams in Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, and Ivory Coast - eish! my team hopefully they can go to the second round (never know, remember how they surprised us in 1996 winning CAF)

Manuel: 2009-12-03 12:32

so u lot think nigeria will win the world cup? that cameroon can? or that ivory coast who cant win the nations cup will? i see a lot of ghana bashing in the reaction but michael cldnt have been more spot on. it wld be great if it happened but it won't. and that is not having an average ghanaian mentality. but lest we forgot...de average ghanaian mentality won de u-20 world cup...de average mentality has made essien so good he plays before others i know...de average ghanaian mentality produced abedi pele...de average ghanaian mentality and low self esteeem has seen this country climb up in leap and bounds in the football world. so the AVERAGE GHANAIAN MENTALITY is not such a bad thing if anything like that exist

Cobby: 2009-12-03 14:32

Well siad Manuel.... as for this boy known as hehehehe, we all know his hate for Ghana. He can't just argue without saying something against Ghana.

Please let me help you here with what you started... "The everage Ghanaian mentality of a low sense of self esteem or some sort of clinical depression" is ironically known to bw the 1st to fight for his indenpendence and help his super mental Nigeria, to also get independence. He go back to his history. Super mentalitý indeed!! Do you think slef esteem is going about dupoing people and bringing africa's name into shame? POOR NAIJA!! High esteem has more to do than just being rude. Use your brains like Ghanaians to fight, and don't rush. I know you can make it too, if you don't rush into things.
Please stop envying Ghana.

Profesory: 2009-12-03 18:33

Sir Michael ati Odjei...Hear me and hear me well, the day will come,oh yes, mark my words Michael ati Odjei. The day of reckoning for you and all prophets of doom is coming in 2010 when the good of evil will blow through your average ghanaian mentality and wipe that low self esteeem off your face.Myself and many other Africans will be there, with our glory as we watch you and your overrated colonial masters come clumbering down.
This is a world cup tornament,11 vs 11,history wont mean anything, its the atmosphere, the feeling, fitness, combinations and tactics used by coaches that will win games. This is the time when excuses have to stop and the winning need to begin all over again.
I'm not Nigerian nor am i from any of the 6 countries from the motherland but here is the truth,no fear,no colonial masters syndrome,no biasness,no average ghananian mentality, just the facts:
Nigeria yes did not have an easy qualification but who did?Brasil striggled,Argentina almost failed to qualify,France was helped by the hand of Tghiery Henry,Portugal sweet talked their way to South Africa,Italy hussled through,Germany choked through out the qualifying...who really had an easy day at the office?okay Spain and England..but who did they play against?Croatia?hahaha,Bafana Bafana without a coach with Old john mabizela,Jabu mahlangu,Steve Lekoalea,Patric Mbuthu,Naughty Mokoena and Aaron Mokoena can beat Croatia any day, anywhere.
Nigeria has the experience and depth.
Ghana have been there, they now know what to expect. They will create chances,i just wish they could finish more.South Africa willbe helped by the fact that everyone else have ruled them out,no one expects them to do anything, teams will expect to score 5 goals against them, what happens when they dont?they get frastrated, they start changing their game plan, talk tooo much to the referee then they get booked, lose concentration and God knows,Benni will punish you at any given chance.
Ivory coast, led by the bug number 11.That team is ready.
Algeria has that workrate, concentration and discipline that was lacking in many African teams in the past,
Cameroon have been there, seen that and done it all, they just need to repalce Song and find quicker defenders(but what team has perfect defenders?),upfront they are deadly
Michael ati Odjei, brother from another country, dust off your vuvuzela, wear your colours, clear your throat, lern your dance moves,I have a feeling that there will be a party in Africa.Yes you are invited, even if it means i will have to listen to your fake accent, the accent that is meant to impress your colonial masters, its a syndrome associated with that ghananian mentality, that low self esteem...

Profesory: 2009-12-03 18:51

One more thing...African teams just like Saudi Arabia, korea, japan,USA,Holland,Chile and all the other world cup perenial failures have not won the world cup because of the follwoing
..They conceded more goals than thier opponents
...they did not score more goals than their opponents
So its ridiculous to associate world cup virginity with African teams only. The game of football is as easy as paying for ***,she tells you the price, you pay,you get what you want!...Football too,its all about gaining possesion and using it effectively to score goals. If you dont have it,you all work hard to win it back, then play as a unit to score goals. There is no magic in there, even my girlfriend who hates this beautiful game with passion, can tell you that...

Deni: 2009-12-03 23:38

@ Cobby, if you are an African, I am really ashamed of your comment. We are telling a brother how to think big, of not feeling inferior and you are putting it down to Nigerians envying Ghanaians. Why should Nigeria envy Ghana?
Back to football issues, which European team has better players than the Ivory Coast with Drogba? Which world attacker can be said to be more deadly than Eto and Drogba? The truth is that the African teams do have the same chance as any team to win the world cup. We saw Cameroon against England in 1990, Nigeria against Italy in 1994 and Ghana againts Brazil in 2006. Do you think this countries were better than the African teams. It boils down to past officiating and we hope CAF wont tolerate that sort of officiating in 2010. Not after referees have received the bashing after the refs performance between France/Ireland match. The under 20 and under 17 world cups does not count because we all know that African and South American teams go to those tournaments with over-aged players.
What we Africans are telling Ghanaians is for them to stop feeling inferior before the Europeans and Americans. We humans all have same capacity. You cant hear the French, English or Germans accuse themselves of envy, why would Africans envy each other.
Why would a Nigerian envy a Ghanaian. Is Ghana richer than Nigeria. Are Ghanaians doing better than Nigerians in sports, arts, business, literature, medicine, music or in all field of human endeavour. Around the world over, both in Asia, US and Europe. It is a known fact that Nigeria has more professionals outside Africa than any African country. Nigeria has more Phd holders outside Africa than any African nation.
If a Nigerian succeeds in dupping you, it means he is smatter than you. And by the way, you are also a criminal for wanting to benefit from a dubious business that you got duped. I am proud of the Nigerians who succeeds in dupping any non-African that is interested in stealing from Africa. There are right ways of dong business, if you follow due process, you will never get duped. But if you are dubious, you will get duped.
Cobby, what do you have to say of the Europeans and Americans who steal from Africa and are still interested in stealing from Africa. What do you say of the non-Africans who creat all sort of problems in Africa with their multnational companies. If you have nothing to say, why then do you envy Nigerians for being smatter than you and being able to be very smart to fool those who think Africans are fools or unintelligent

Deni: 2009-12-04 00:09

This comment deviates from football matters. What has envy got to do with football. Why would any Nigerian want to trade places with Ghana? Please, watch comments like this.

mike, this forumite has worked with u before at the chronicle.i have always liked your writings till this one.wt is so particular about the european and south american teams.or should i say white boys, tell us?in the premiership we see the only time stephen gerrard fails to play well is when he comes up against essien, mascherano as well.wt goalkeeper has drogba not beaten or wt defence has he not outwitted?our self defeating confidence always makes white boys run over us.we go to school with them we are better in class so wt is so particular about football that we cant perform like or better than them.i rather expected you to encourage our 6 reps and believe in themselves rather than this kind of thinking.i am damn disappointed in you.you think the english media dont know their team is not good enough, they just wont talk about it,shame on u mike.u should be fired by kickoff and joy fm.england were totally outplayed by brazil recently but then u should have seen their media, all manner of excuses we adduced.the last friendly ghana played against brazil call dunga and ask him if he expected the level of competition.our teams should rise to the occassion.discipline is the key.forget about these interim bonus issues,(players)the money will cum after the tournament.
i see a trend towards which the foreign teams and some so called experts are trying to frustrate african efforts at winning the cup.they did it to south africa hosting, it didnt work, now they are turning it to our play.i was just reading some comments from the bbc site and most of these fake experts are saying africa has some quality talent but indisciplined players.even rooney is respected in england as disciplined.
mike coming from a black man (and for you u are extra black) like you i expected better.
i write this not with emotions or unrealistic expectations but with the belief that we have the quality to do it.so boss pls shut up or put up

Deni: 2009-12-04 05:26

@Kobby. Thanks for your ****ysis. If the English press can think of the English team as being good enough to lift the cup, why would the African press not think any of the African teams may win the world cup? Which African team is Egland better than. Okay, maybe, the South African players are inexperience. But can we compare the English team to the Ivory Coast team. The Brazilian team find it difficult when playing African teams. The Brazilians were beaten at the 96 Olympic semi-finals by Nigeria. The Brazilian Olympic team was almost the national team. The Argentine Olympic team was beaten by Nigeria in the 96 Olympic finals. There is no European or South American team the Africans cant beat. Therefore, the Africans have as much chance as the Europeans or South Americans to lift the cup, except FIFA plans to stop the Africans. It is sheer madness for any African to write-off a team like the Ivory Coast. Even madness for Europeans and South Americans to write-off the Ivory Coast with their A-List football stars like Drogba (the most lethal attacker in the Premiership at the moment)Yaya Toure, Kolo Toure, Salamon Kalou, Emmanuel Ebue etc. Ivory Coast is my pick for the Africans. Though, the Nigerians know how to play the Europeans and South Americans and finds it easier beaten them then when they play African teams. The Europeans and South American are easier teams to beat than beating an African team. We have the talent, strenght and professional attitute to play at the highest level. We need to pray for luck and we can see two African teams in the semi-finals of the world cup. I see four African teams making it to the second round and at least three to the quater-finals. Time to let go that inferiority complex the white man has planted in some of us to believe they are superior than us. Look at it, if the whites are superior, France will not be fielding an almost black team that we can mistake for an African team.

gbolaro: 2009-12-04 15:14

dear brother mike,u are entitled to your own opinion but make no mistake that no african team will go far in 2010.most of the european and south american teams you seem to revere are not better than nigeria, ivory coast, ghana, algeria, cameroon and host south africa at least judging by the exploits of african players in major footballing leagues of the world.it is also high time caf and african teams play the football politics.no one is thinking or considering nigeria as a team to make africa proud bcos the way the team struggled to qualify but make no mistake at all,any team that takes nigeria for granted does that at its own peril,i asure you that.we believe that when the chips are down we can hold our own at any level that is why we fear no foe.what the african teams need to imbibe is determination to succeed against all odds, tactical discipline, concentration and mother luck.come south africa 2010,an africa team will surely make africa proud.
