DR Congo through to AFCON quarter-finals as Group C winners after convincing win over Togo

DR Congo cruised through to the quarter-finals of the 2017 African Nations Cup as Group C winners after seeing off Togo 3-1 at Stade de Port-Gentil on Tuesday.

The match proved a rather tame affair in the opening exchanges, with numerous breaks in play preventing either team from building any meaningful momentum.

The Sparrow Hawks’ ambitions were further pegged back midway through the first-half after goalkeeper Baba Tchagouni needed to be taken off with a knee injury after just 23 minutes.

On came Cedric Mensah in his place, although the substitute keeper’s first real contribution to the game was to take the ball out of his net after Junior Kabananga’s shot from nothing flashed across the area and into the bottom corner.

Just nine minutes into the second-half and Congo had top spot in the group all wrapped up, with Marcel Tisserand playing Ndombe Mubele through in the area, and the forward hammered home a fierce drive to punish a lacklustre defence.

Togo were determined to spoil the party, though, and pulled one back with 21 minutes remaining, Dakonam Djene crossing in to find Emmanuel Adebayor, who moved the ball on to Razak Boukari, who in turn fed Kodjo Fo-Doh Laba to round off the move with a simple finish.

However, Congo were having none of it and soon regained their two-goal lead, Paul-Jose M'Poku firing in a wonderful free-kick which left the goalkeeper no chance, with the result setting up a quarter-final clash against Egypt.
