Adebayor: Mbombela pitch a disgrace for Africa

Togo captain Emmanuel Adebayor had some strong words on the state of the pitch at the Mbombela Stadium

Togo captain Emmanuel Adebayor had some strong words on the state of the pitch at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit.

The Tottenham striker saw his side holding on for a 1-1 draw with Tunisia, which was enough to see his side through to the last eight, where they will play against Burkina Faso.

While he was elated with the result, the lanky marksman had some less than complimentary words about the playing surface.

“Once again we are in Africa - Afcon is a big tournament for Africa - the whole world are watching this, you can’t play on a pitch like this.

“To be honest with you I’m very sorry but it’s a disgrace for our continent to be playing on this pitch when it’s on the TV around the world.”

“Those people that watch the game in Europe, they will be sending sms’s to me tonight asking me, ‘are you playing in the bush or what’, it’s a disgrace to our continent, we can do better.”

The problem arose after soil had been thrown on the pitch to sort out the wet surface which arose after several days of heavy rain - a move which was apparently not sanctioned by the Confederation of African football (CAF).

Fire that Stadium Management now...they should have put contingency plans in place 4 weather changes and enclosed the pitch just like in cricket. They compromised the pitch by throwing sand without seeking professional advice.

When Super eagles of Nigeria complained about that pitch, you SAs went on rampage abusing them to play and win matches. Now they are vindicated by Adebayo's comment.
Sometime i wonder the level of literacy in South Africa judging their understanding of issues.
Somebody should be responsible to his duty of keeping that stadium ready for a competition like this.

About the Mbombela pitch, a lot has been said while a lot of reservation has been made. Anyone WHO IS NOT FROM SOUTH AFRICA talking about the bad pitch is quickly reminded that his country has worse pitches. Please be reminded that the location of that pitch is not what made it internationally unacceptable. It is the STATE, STANDARD, LOOK, and FEEL of the pitch that is awful, not the location or country of domicile. Mallam Usman Dan Fodio once said and I quote: “Conscience is an open wound; only the truth can heal it". Therefore, the so many legions of voices can never suppress the truth. After all the curses rained on others, the condition of the pitch remains the same. Let’s call a spade a spade and not a big fork.

This is true Mbombela Municipality technical advisors did a very bad job, it is a sorry situation.
Let us all forgive those involved and look ahead. Forgive our FIFA recognised referee DB for further embarassing us. Please, may we build one another not the insults . We need to be united in the support of Bafana Bafana. Do say prayers for total peace and unity in the camp for guaranteed success.

Bobby Mutaung is to blame for this, that greedy fraudster.

It's raining all over the country, and all these stadium have a world class draining system. All except Mbombela who use sand as a means of sucking out water from the pitch.

What did he do with that money with which he was supposed to build a draining system for the stadium?

Bobby Mutaung is a Thief and it makes me sick to the stomach because now our country is being slammed by this Togolese who probably has a lesser quality stadium in his own country.

I hope he will rot in prison when they prove him guilty. Nxa

Hey U morons!!! Leave Mr.Adebayor alone!!!!! What did u want him to say? That he thoroughly enjoyed playing on that surface? That he hopes the groundsman pours mud on it the next time? That he's from such a poor country,he would have been happy with just a lil patch of grass by the corner kick flag? Get the F**k outta here! That pitch is a disgrace! Why r so scared to face the truth? Or at least voice out your anger at the groundsman and the incompetent people that paid him for his "expertise". And for that keep saying the games must be moved to another venue...please don't show what idiots u are just wanted

Adebayor is speaking the honest truth and saying what needs to be said. That pitch is a disgrace to African football and should be removed from any further participation in this AFCON programme. It makes it a total lottery to ask teams to attempt any kind of football on such a surface. Shameful

To me, what I cannot wrap my brain around is why so many South African commentators on this forum defend the terrible pitch and attack one of the many people who have stated an opinion? He didn't say South Africa doesn't have good stadia, did not assault anyone, why attack him?

Best to acknowledge shortcomings, as it is the only things can get better. All the colorful language only shows how small minded tribalist you are. Don't forget: people who care tell you their real opinion; those who hate you will only stab you in the back.
