Zamiba beat Ivory Coast in 2012 Africa Cup of Nations Final

Zambia are champions of Africa!

Posted: 2012-02-13 00:46

After an epic shoot-out, the Chipolopolo defeated Cote d'Ivoire 8-7 on penalties in the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations Final.

The match was 0-0 after 120 minutes.

Chipolopolo honoured the memory of their fallen 1993 team by clinching their first ever Africa Cup of Nations title.

Zambia emerged as winners at the Angondje stadium in Libreville by proving to be cooler customers than Cote d’Ivoire during the penalty kick session.

Cote d’Ivoire kicked off the final but Zambia were the first to threaten through a close range Nathan Sinkala strike that drew an excellent reaction save from Boubacar Barry.

The chance set the tone for what followed, clearly indicating that that the Zambians were hardly overawed by the occasion and prepared to cause problems for their star-studded opponents.

Just as they have been at the entire tournament, the southern Africans were revelling in their underdogs tag. Not even an early game-ending injury to Joseph Musonda could dampen Zambian enthusiasm, though it did force Herve Renard to use his first substitution just 10 minutes into the game by inserting Nyambe Mulenga to deputise at left-back.

13 minutes later, Rainford Kalaba came close to scoring the opener with a powerful free kick from distance. The ensuing Chipolopolo corner was converted into an inconclusive Elephants counter attack that was led by Gervinho, hinting at a possible Ivorian awakening.

Francois Zahoui’s men showed some glimmers of their quality on 30 minutes, their best chance coming when Didier Drogba’s clever backheel pass found an unmarked Yaya Toure who missed despite being well placed to score. Even so, the Zambians closed out the half looking the more composed side after having unsettled the title favourites.

Zambia’s superiority continued in the second period despite it initially seeming that that Francois Zahoui’s halftime chat had had the desired effect on the Ivorians. Their vigour quickly faded though and the tempo dropped, with Renard’s men creating a few chances through Christopher Katongo.

Despite their mediocrity up to that point, the Elephants were gifted a chance to take the lead in the 69th when Gervinho was taken down on the edge of the penalty area by Isaac Chansa.

Drogba stepped up to shoot the generous spot kick but missed his second penalty of the tournament, blasting his effort over high over Kennedy Mweene’s crossbar.

The dramatic sequence injected some much-needed urgency into the match for both sides but clear-cut scoring opportunities were still lacking. In the 87th minute substitute Max Gradel dragged an effort wide after twisting past his marker.

Zambia nearly punished their opponents for their wastefulness but Kolo Toure recovered well to intercept a Chansa chip headed towards the pacey Emmanuel Mayuka for regular time to end goalless.

At the start of extra time, Zambia picked up where they left off as Christopher Katongo first time shot forced an outstanding save from the ever-alert Barry. Cote d’Ivoire dominated possession but continued to have no effective response for the Chipolopolo.

With the dreaded penalty kicks approaching, the Ivorians pushed hard for a winner but failed to make their pressure count while Zambia were content to defend deep and make brief forays forward. No winner was found and a marathon penalty kick session followed in which Kolo Toure missed first and looked to have eliminated his team.

Rainford Kalaba handed the Elephants an improbable lifeline that Gervinho wasted. Stophira Sunzu stepped forward and proved much less merciful that his prior teammate, burying his shot confidently to offer his country their first continental title and washing away the final failures of 1974 and 1994.

Congrats to Chipolo, what a team!! Gave their all, fought with everything they had. A well deserved victory. People went on about Ivory Coast being favourites forgeting that they were not the defending champions. They had the same stage fright as Zambia having not won the Championship for a very long period. The whole Ivorian team have never won the trophy before, so, it was equally poised. Yes, they have won trophies with their respective teams, but not as an Ivorian team. Chipolopolo wayawaya!!!!!!!!!!!

sidney: 2012-02-13 01:15

The best coach goes to Zambia coach Rainford. To our own Bafana coach Pitso to call himself the best coach is an insult to soccer loving South Africans he must be charged for misleading the public.

Well done Chipolopolo boys. For now we do not need any stupid ****ysis such as lucky win blur, blur. For once critics of Zambia shut-up and apologize. Mamadou and Amunike I guess you are crying.

Agbe: 2012-02-13 03:19

Congratulations to Zambia. Am glad they won it and what a befitting place to win it. The same place where they lost nearly all members of their team in 1993. Once again, congrats to them.

Am also glad those big mouth Ghanaians got what they deserve, running their month all over the place and getting a proper beaten in return.
Am also glad that the EPL was shown for what it is. Playing in the English premier league is not a barometer to judge how good you are; all the so called big heavy EPL players all had a stinker.

And finally to my fellow football loving friends and to Keshi, as you can see. Good and winning football is played by players that are mobile and have good technique and not heavy guys. What works in EPL don’t work in Africa. That Yakubu finish yesterday was a great goal for the EPL but I don’t think that turn with the dexterity of a battle ship will full nippy and sharp African defenders.

PLS Keshi leave Yakubu and Etuhu out of you team or else they will be giving a run around by Rwandan players just like the Yaya T and Sikoras were given a proper run around today.

We all want to be at the next nations cup and world cup, so pls pick the Siasia team, you only need to improve on the defense and thank God Apam is back so lucky you.

The Ghost: 2012-02-13 04:29

Shame, i c some morons are trying hard to hijack Zambia's win as theirs. Sorry fellow South African, Zambia won the cup for Zambia not for Southern Africa.

People just don't seem to learn. Having "World Class" players alone is no gurantee for success. Senegal, Ghana & Ivory Coast all failed to beat Zambia. This was no fluke for the Zambians. Congratulations are in order.

Those who are calling Mamadou Gaye names need to be civilised. Just because he got his predictions wrong does not mean he's fool.

Once a Happy Person Always a Happy Ghost

Tzozo : 2012-02-13 06:12

If Pitso is a real coach he must have learned that to win against those physically imposing West Africans u simply don't allow them to score first. As favourites they get frustrated when they don't have things their way.

Zambia,s win was more to do with their organised defence. If you don,t concede goals it is easy to win matches. It is a pity in Pitso we have a village coach whose knowledge of futball is on par with my granny's.

Kidkudu7, maybe your question should also add...where is Mamadou Gaye and his Suarez-alike-fools?

Every time when I say something people don't listen, they actually let their hearts and emotions run away with their thinking. I said it and am still going to say it that names don't play but people play in the field of play...period.

I just wonder where are these fools. Or are they trying to cook excuses as usual? I won't be surprised if they come out and accusing Colonel Khoza for bribing the referee (who was fair and unbiased for my liking) from Senegal simply because a galaxy was part of the winning team. Where were the Zim (cheap labour)?

We said it, mabakaniya, that Chansa was going to instill mentality of winning to the Chipolopolo team. But my heartfelt and sincere respect goes to the fallen heroes of 1993 and the team did well to make their souls rest in peace.

Remember another reason was that Zambia sings the same tune of our national anthem. They did it in style.

Thank you my broda Agbe, I hope Keshi would have learnt 1 or 2 lessons from this afcon that the Ayews, Toures, et-al of the so called big wigs of African football is not what plays the game. Egypt proved by using locals to win the afcon back to back 3 times just as they did'nt qualify and country with locals (Zambia) has won it again playing and disgracing the so called Euro stars with their so called high profile credentials. Football is not played these days with individual talents but by team work. If he "keshi" remembers what happened to him at Algiers 90 when the so called then pros. of the SE refused or where reluctant to ply for the SE, Clemence Westerhof used a couple of locals (the Amokachi, finidi,Elaho, Uwe etc all playing in the local league then)and they went to Algeria and played up to the finals after losing the first game to the host by a 5-1 margin. Please take note and this noise of recalling to the SE the likes of Yakubu, Dickson, Mikel etc because they are playing well now at the EPL.A word is enough for the wise. Don't emulate the likes of Ghana and Ivory Coast otherwise you'll fall like they did.

before you expose your stupidity read again the post from Bucs supporters. If you have a child in the school team who wins comes with that team, will you not be proud of that child? Give us a break, we are proud of Chansa, and we never said Chansa is the player of the tournament even though he also played a vital role in this amazing achievement. All the Zambia players worked hard for the team and perfomed brilliately, they really desrve to be champions of Africa!!! We are happy and celebrate with them whether Bafana is doing bad or not and whether you like it or not.

@Masautso Tembo,

Hey you Baboon, you must stop calling our National team Bafana bafana names. If you are a true Zambians why are you so angry and sad that we are celebrating Zambia's success. Did you expect us to be jelous and angry? I suggest you visit Suppersport united web site you will see them reporting about their Zambian Champ, Freestate stars web site are bragging about their star player Mweene, in their web site they call him a super athlete, go to the Golden arrows web site is bragging about their Mosonda, The Pirates web site is bragging about our own Chansa, and Celtic is preparing disciplinery actions against Mulenga who misrepresented not only Zambia but Celtic as well.

Yaah..! This Kaiser Thifs fans calling themselves Zambians here are full of s.h.i.t. There is nothing wrong when Pirates community celebrate with their player, Isaac Chansa. FS Stars, SSport and G Arrows are doing the same with Mweene, Nkausu and Musonda. Even TP Masembe is celebrating with their 5 superstars. No one is taking any credit away from Zambia..! Thiefs would have done the same should Zimbabwe have won. Stop being jealous, please..! Shapa Chipolopolo Shapaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa..!

This person above is not a Zambian, but one of the disgruntled SA citizen who is jealous of us celebrating Zambia's victory. Honestly South Africa has every right to celebrate with Zambia. Apart from their players plying their trade in SA we share many common things with Zambia. We were in the struggle together, our anthem tune is the same, we identify with their surnames as many of the Zambians resides in Mzansi. So shut up wena and i suspect you are one of the overrated team supporter.

Where are those who said Zambia won't beat Ivory Coast including one named "Sechaba"? The are hiding after Zambia proved that Ivory Coast is just an ordinary team full of physical not skillful players. they were given the favourite tag because they are playing in England, France and other leagues in Europe not because of their ability to play. Zambia played beautiful African football from the start of the tournament, using their skills and pace and they were never intimidated by the tall physical players from Senegal, Ghana and Ivory Coast. Zambia victory is a shock to those who believe that football matches are win on sentiments. A coach in Botswana League, Innocent Morapedi has put right last night ****ysing the final; He said some people will say Zambia victory over Ivory Coast is a shock. According to him it cannot be a shock when they beat Senagal and Ghana convincingly before the final, to their win is developmental. I hope Mamadou Gaye will learn to shut his mouth next time because his Ivory Coast side has proved once again that the are big chokers of African football.

@Swona, which part of shut-up dont you understand? Bafana bafana has a better team? What scale are you using? The latest is Zambia is the champion in Africa and next year we will bag in another cup.Its those teams that never qualified that are small.Dont 4get its the same team that demolished ba banana banana when Katongo scored a hat-trick. I guess you were still suckling by then.

Siyanda Walter Mda: 2012-02-13 16:55

Zambia played with composure and as a team from beginning to end. They really did the SADC region very proud. The Southern Africa are very proud of them. As I watched the match, I couldn't help but notice that the majority of the fans were supporting Zambia. It was a good final.

What impressed me the most, was to see the soccer greats gracing the occas...ion. Among them were; Pele, Sammuel Eto', FIFA President Sepp Blatter, EURO President Michell Platini. That showed the tournament received maximum support.

However, I cannot help to think that Ivory Coast were conspired against. Going into the match, they were strong favorites to lift the Cup, especially after Ghana were eliminated in the semis. It seems like the soccer gods conspired against Ivory Coast. As I watched the match unfold, even before extra-time, I concluded that Zambia will win this Cup. Didier Drogba and Toure missing penalties at such an occasion is just beyond sheer luck. Something was amiss. That was not FIFA fair play in my opinion. Some decisions by the referee went against Zambia, but still Ivory Coast could not capitalize on that.

Be that as it may, Zambia are the African Champions. They just had to win. It was indeed written in the stars. Fate sealed it for them. No team could have stopped them.

WELL DONE CHIPOLOPOLO! ZAMBIA - AFCON 2012 CHAMPIONS!!!!!!!!!!!
