Absa Premiership CEO Stan Matthews lauds PSL over Zambia's Afcon success

Matthews lauds the PSL

Posted: 2012-02-10 09:46

Premiership CEO Stan Matthews says Zambia reaching the final of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations is an indication of "the high standard of football in the PSL".

The Zambians will take on the star-studded Cote d'Ivoire on Sunday evening.

"We are proud of Zambia's achievements as they have demonstrated to the continent and the world that the PSL is a competitive League to play in.

"The fact that it has been current and former PSL players contributing to the success of the Zambian team indicates the strength and the high standard of football in the PSL," Matthews argues.

Do you agree with Matthews? Have your say on Facebook HERE!

There are seven PSL players in the Zambia squad, after the expulsion of Bloemfontein Celtic's Clifford Mulenga for breaking curfew.

Davis Nkausu [SuperSport United], Isaac Chansa [Orlando Pirates], Joseph Musonda, Collins Mbesuma [both Golden Arrows], Kennedy Mweene, Noah Chivuta [both Free State Stars], Kampamba Chintu [Bidvest Wits] are all part of the squad vying for the title.

"It must be also be mentioned that 11 members of the Zambian squad that will play in the final are either current PSL players or have played in the PSL before. Former players include, James Chamanga, Kanalilo Kakonje, Felix and Chris Katongo. You must add to that list Siaka Tiene of Cote d'Ivoire. At least one third of the composition of the two finalists have links to the PSL," explains Matthews.

"This suggests without doubt that the PSL is a springboard for international and continental stardom and we must celebrate this. In terms of the final, the PSL will have the highest representation and provider of players to a team in the final," Matthews adds.

You better concentrate on your crappy

BafanaBafana and leave Zambia alone.
You are one of those Chibuku fans think Zambia is in the AFCON finals because of Chansa.....
This chibuku drinking Mathews!!!

Mr matthews, were responsible for a deal that involve Bongani Khumalo and Tottenham. If u were please rectify it as soon as possible. U puts money first and did not worry about the future of this young man. U re busy sending players overseas to sits on the bench. The Psl has done a lot and you have done nothing so far.

Anyway what u saying is corrects, psl is a brand and amongst the world best.

WHAT FAT BIG JOKE.........Sowetan artcile...BAFANA Bafana coach Pitso "Jingles" Mosimane should take credit for somehow helping Zambia to reach the final of the Africa Cup of Nations.
Mosimane and his largely inexperienced side gave a star-studded Chipopolopo a good Afcon preparation in a practice match at Rand Stadium on January 11.

I feel sorry 4 Zim & SA they were failed by Kaizer Chiefs players/gays.

Pelezinyo: 2012-02-10 10:27

Matthews should be talking about Zambia's talent rather than give psl undue credit. If he's not talking crap, where the fcuk is BB...? Zambian playas r talented, patriotic and not just playing 4 money

Sipho: 2012-02-10 10:37

And where is our Bafana Bafana? Clearly there is something wrong with the PSL Mr Mathews if its benefiting other countries more than our own. The PSL is among the best leagues, if not the best, in the continent. How do you then explain the fact that despite our best league, we are still far from becoming Africa's best. Maybe we no longer have talented players. I mean, if we are going to celebrate and encourage our players to join low teams abroad, it says a lot about our confidence and talent. Why cant our players be signed by Barca, Real Madrid, Ac Milan,****nal, ManU, FC Bayern, etc etc. I give up on South African Football. Just recently, a second division team invited our player for TRIALS!!!! What happened to our pride as South Africans and our self belief??? This is a joke.

SECOND EDITION

Let me start by saying thanks once again to Kickoff for the soccer news and updates we getting served with everyday on this site.

After some consideration and comparison between our forums and other forums e.g ****nal supporters forum it saddens me to see the huge difference in a sense that we South Africans tend to take advantage of the platform given to us to ABUSE and MISUSE the facilities by insulting our own coaches, players, opposition supporters and our team’s management. If you put yourself in the shoes of the likes of e.g Shabalala who is been called “Nyawana”, Ndulula who is been called “used condom”, and all the other guys who are been called names, how would you feel mara he???

A forum is made for us supporters to work hand in hand with the technical team for the betterment of our beloved teams. There is nothing wrong in criticizing and giving nicknames but let us do it professionally and constructively. I do not think that most players, coaches or any team management take us supporters seriously anymore because of our own doing on our respective forums, that is why most bloggers use fake/multiple usernames to logon sites.

Excuse my English, it is not my mother tongue after all.

Zambia has just proven Pitso correct. You will never win any games if you do not have strikers. 99% of Zambia goals have been scored by strikers, Mayuka and Chris Katongo, only one goal was scored by Kalaba. People will call Pitso names just because of stupidity on their part. Is stan saying EPL is weak, because senegal had a lot of players from epl and France league had a lot of players in AFCON, but those countries failed. Zambia is their time, thats all.

how can you jump from Grade R to University, if you see those players in Barca/Man U/Inters started somewhere step by step until on top , George weah/Drogbas/Yaya Toures etc all started in France the very same lig you undermine, so this is the problem we have as south africans yokunyatsa evrywhere uyanyatsa whereas you are low class

mzwandile: 2012-02-10 11:08

Now this Mathews Guy is talking Crap, You can only gauge PSL against Bafana Bafana not other countries. Dont try ur luck here Broel Psl sucks and Bafana Sucks. To reference that, statistics dont lie, when last did we get a 20 goal top scorer in ur so called Successful lig?

mzwandile: 2012-02-10 11:09

Another Indicator is participation and succes in the Champions lig..dont talk crap here Nxa

Oooh cum on Mr Mathews, Lord hv mercy oo, hw cld u stoop so low!!!, Could u pliz xplain wy a Bafana squad wc consists of all playerz who got PSL roots or currently serving.. isnt featuring at da soccer showcase. Jst applaud Zambia 4 hoisting da SADC flag sky high.. kwete kuda kukwana-kwana.

Sweyts : 2012-02-10 11:38

Zambians should'nt mind this stooge, he's been sent most probably by his toothless bosses to spew this bile on their behalf, it can't be his sentiments with hardly two months in the job.

Besides Zambia are doing it themselves for themselves and most importantly their fallen heroes of '93, the least we could do is congratulate them and give our support (as SADEC), finish and klaar.

Liesbeeck: 2012-02-10 11:44

Only 3players regularly playing in the Zambian team are regulars in their PSL teams, viz. Chansa,Mweene&Musonda. Zambian national team success has nothing to do with PSL but everything to do with all the hard work the whole zambian team put towards making their AFCON journey thus far a success, their FA,technical team, players etc. There is a lot of TP Mazembe players in that Zambian squad. We all know that TP Mazembe dominated in the continent and even made impact in the World Club Cup. PSL must please stop with this moemish, we have had enough of moemishes with SAFA already.

vide misebezi: 2012-02-10 11:49

I rily wonder why this man(ceo) is tokng all ths crap.i dont believ ths! Zamb plays as a team not bunch of 6 psl players.th succes at afcon is as a result of th right choice of selection among vast talented players tht we hv.put yo house in order before u came and issue silly coments, wev got players in drc, europe, asia and not forgetng our own local players who ar far much better than yo so called proffesionals.

j747: 2012-02-10 11:55

#eight one thing i've realised is two things r infinite:de universe n human stupidity n i'm nt sure abt de universe

we cant complain like little kids whenever we lose as a national team or our favourate teams. pitso won n drew couple of games n it was silent in de house, eventualy fails 2 qualify 4 afcon, then started YADA YADA YADA. come bloggers grow up gees.

sirnzo : 2012-02-10 12:01

Wht he is saying is true its just the way he said it, its like he want to take credit for zambia. Yes their players gained a lot in psl compared to their league bt the truth is thy deserved their credit not. Sa either psl or safa deserve credit for moomish of all time

Black & Yellow : 2012-02-10 12:04

Pure desperation 4 something to celebrate...

Unless we start taking seriously the building of our national team we won't go anywhere.one thng we need to learn is dat every gr8 team has a backbone, from goalie, centre back, central midfield and main striker & also da fact dat dez no substitute 4 experience. In SA, every player who strings 2geda 5 gud performances and scores a goal against da big 3 is drafted in2 the bafana set up, prematurely of course & more experienced players who are experiencing a dip in FORM are dropped. We den expect these youngsters to deliver instant success but it doesn't work like that in football! We end up frustrated & start booing these players...

I'll pause...

1.@All PSL Trophies you have to change your name the sooner the better because your team has won nothing, nada, zilch
It is so sad to hear people confusing the Great PSL and Bafana Bafana.PSL is an entity on its own and it is growing. It is one of the best in the world and it is a fact.Bafana Bafana is something else and it has nothing to do with Stan Mathews.
Stan is a CEO of PSL not of Bafan Bafana or SAFA.He is very correct and he selling his good brand.PSL is professionally managed that is why you some teams does not even bother exporting to Europe the standard is high.@Brazalito you know your story, let's keep on educating each other.

Black & Yellow : 2012-02-10 12:14

I remember Rainford Kalaba from a Cosafa Under 20 tournament a couple of yrs back, a tournament in which we had the likes of Lebo Mokoena, Lerato Chabangu, Daine Klate, Robyn Johannes, Lance Davids, Madidilani and many others... None of these players are in the current BB set-up as key players despite hvng been professional players 4 a number of years now...

From the above, one or 2 thngs are evident; Either these youngsters were mediocre back then & always have been or we dnt have proper transition plans for our players from junior ranks to the senior national team or these players ...

Something needs to be done...

Champ-Marapo: 2012-02-10 12:14

Not all PSL players are good to participate in these big tournament let alone play in the PSL. We witnessed one PSL team being molested, masturbated, ***ually harassed, and moered by vodacom teams but its players made most of the Zim and Bafunny squads.

What did people expect from these losers at the first place....So Mr Mathews your statement is correct to some extent and wrong to some extent.

vhavhani: 2012-02-10 12:20

This is a joke or what U laud the PSL but our players & Bafana Bafana is strugling or maybe ure a Zambian too!

Swona Champ!: 2012-02-10 12:22

what Mathews is saying in simple English is: there is nothing wrong with our football standard and nothing wrong with our league, but we dont have the right people at SAFA and we dont have a coach who can win games for us!

I support him, I think Orlando Pirates, Ajax, can win against that Egypt team home and away, without foreign players, they can also win against Niger, Siera Leon home and away!

There is nothing wrong wit de psl, the problem is Pitso wt his favourtsm. Hw cn u call George Lubisi who's not a regula @ his club while the is Sfiso Myeni who's cousng a havoc in the psl, @ one stage he called Tiko who was not even on the bench bt on the stands while still playng 4 Pirates, at that time Matthew Pattison was in an amazing fom. Dont 4get the unprofnl Kaizer Chips players like Khune who dcded to waist time while the game was still 0-0, and the likes of Shabba who were tryng so hard to scope an overseas move, and ended up being selfish tryng to score even if the angel allow him to pass the ball.

meg7113: 2012-02-10 12:59

This is a joke of the day. Never thought some people could be so dull and yet shameless.
According to your folly Mr.Matthews, how come most of your players are just spectating from shebeens having failed to qualify?
Southern Africa does not boast for funding and actively participating to see freedom in RSA. We do not claim the glory but count it a blessing to be with our brothers and sisters. What about the inferior leagues that nurtured them until you saw them polished?
If you are bored at watching supper replays of the mighty Zambia get a vuvuzela and start blowing lessons in preparations for Sunday, big-day. By the way, what are doing at home? Go to the tourney and bring back the cup with the boys you train.
If I were you I would say the opposite. Zambian has raised the standard of soccer in your country. Finally if you are that good send Zambians away and train your own.

Van Basten: 2012-02-10 13:31

@ Eight: I think we both belong to Robert Marawa sports centre show Radio and Facebook where intelligecy meets intelligency. I think SAFA and PSL refer to Kick Off to gauge supporters reaction to breaking news and what they see in this forum is black against black on issues not relating to the topic. hence the continuation of embarassing us in front of Africans living in the country.

KidKudu7: 2012-02-10 13:37

The fact that Bafana Bafana are not in the CAN its because of incompentent coach, period.

Zambia and Ivory Coast to play 2012 Editon of Afcon Finals. The similarity is that both countries have ex players running football in their countries. They don't need a sangoma to win matches. Also, this man mentioned that the PSL will be happy to see the number of African players in Afcon from the PSL increasing in the next edition. In future we will be counting local players in the PSL and not vice versa.I'm done with football for a stress free life.

There is a team in the PSL that has so many supporters with voices but using it on stupid issues like critising Downs and Bucs signings. You see if those team supporters were constructive in what they say on football matters, football administrators were going to take us serious.Remember the bafana game away to Niger where players were withdrawn due to "injuries" and what happened 7 days later when they all appeared on a final played on a grazing pitch, did you hear any voice coming out from the 2 camps .Now all of them are blaming Pitso.
