Zimbabwe scandal may affect South African-based players

Zim scandal may affect SA-based players

Posted: 2012-02-01 15:15

Ten of the 80 players who have been suspended by the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) because of their involvement in a damaging 2009 match-fixing scandal could possibly also be barred from playing for their South African clubs.

On Monday, ZIFA announced a list of 80 players that will no longer be eligible to play for the Zimbabwe national team unless they are able to prove their innocence in a highly-publicised match-fixing scandal that saw players and officials being paid to influence the outcome of matches between 2007 and 2009.

The 10 South African-based players affected by the ban include Method Mwanjali, Lionel Mtizwa (Mamelodi Sundowns), Thomas Sweswe, Willard Katsande, Jimmy Jambo (Kaizer Chiefs), Oscar Machapa, Gilbert Mapemba (Moroka Swallows), Khama Billiat (Ajax Cape Town), Energy Murambadoro (Bidvest Wits) and Kingston Nkatha (Black Leopards).

SAFA CEO Robin Peterson tells KickOff.com that world governing body FIFA would decide on whether the ZIFA ban also means that these players can no longer play for their clubs in South Africa.

“We have not received any written correspondence from ZIFA on this issue,” says Peterson. “My view is that they (ZIFA) cannot bar their South African-based players from playing for the clubs here.

“I, for example, cannot ban May Mahlangu from playing in Sweden because we do not have the power to do that.

“We are waiting for FIFA to make a decision so we cannot say more on the issues. We will take a position in line with the FIFA decision,” adds Peterson.

In Zimbabwe, the scandal – which has caused a huge embarrassment to the country – has already claimed a top football official who was dismissed from her position.

That will be very bad news for our neighbours if FIFA decides to ban Zim players, FIFA must have a heart. They (chiefs) have suffered enough and this will just cripple them

Aag shame...what will happen to another team once FIFA decides that they must also be banned from their teams? lol.

But i am not surprised because this is the result of having a crook in the team as Manager...at least FIFA will not let him off the hook like the Mpumalanga Government did.

Mgugudi: The Treble Addict: 2012-02-01 15:32

@ Mno,

You are 100% right about chiefs getting crippled. Where will they get money to buy players from, let alone paying them?

KC is in deep financial trouble, its not funny anymore. We must not allow it to die even though it was formed through theft & survived through the same for the past 4 decades. Let us show them compassion during this difficult time. Please donate food, blankents or whatever goods you may have.

Criminals, once caught should be banned from playing the sport for a very long period.

Thank Heavens, Mwanjali & Mtizwa are no longer regulars at Bafana Bastyle. I pit Family Bonds (30% of the squad). FIFA must suspend them while still deciding whether to ban them or not. Period.

Wandile : 2012-02-01 16:22

@SisterP Madam/Sir from your comment one can conclude that you are blinded by your hatred for Pirates, or you we wet behind the ears when Pirats won Champions league or you simply don't know football.

I am not a Pirats fan but I remeber being filled with pride when Jerry "Legs of thunder" made those Ivorians clush with heads to score a brilliant solo effort. I vividly recall bo Fish, Lane and Magents defending as if their life depended on it against Asec Mimosa attacks. And can I forget Okpara's heroics!

Manje how did Pirats cheat? Was there a hand by Zwane? Where there dubious offside calls in Rothmans Cup? Was there a hand by Thabo Mooki? Need I say more!

Umona makes people nasty. The simple reason than normal thinking people don't respect your team's tophies is that the majority thereof were won by brown envelopes/refs or on penalty. Whereas it is easy to remeber the heroics of Pirats 95 even if you are not a Pirat fan.

I am a kaizer chiefs fan and i am disappoited that the three zim players are bringing our team into desrepute. Chiefs must take action agaist them , we cannot allow our brand to be tarnished by this ordinary players. Even if they are banned for life chiefs will remain strong , i mean Willard is not playing, jambo is not adding value and the least said about swswe the better. They should not be allowed to don the jersy finish and klaar. We have Mashamaite, issacs, Richie, tau, molekane znd we can convert nengomasha to defence and create space for baloyi, yende, dladla, masango, nale, lebese, shabba,. We can even convert Ncobo into a defender so no stress let them waaaai. We will reinforce the squad at the end of the season. there are only 15 league games left so we dont need to stress and buy players with broken legs like our dear friends. fact is we will still collect three points from them

If Zim football is to improve I personally think that everyone starting from the officials , management , players and other influential forces that were involved should be banned for at least 5 years from any involvement in football . This is because ZIFA can start from the grassroots and build better competitive , incorruptible teams and players without having this cancerous disease spreading that has caused our beloved nation all this embarrassment . Once this is done people would think twice about getting involved in having any shadey football ideas and would make us a much more competitive . No mercy for those traitors ( vatengesi ) , do the crime and you must do the time . Think first of the consequences .

i think zifa(zimbabwe failures association) has failed in their handling of asiagate issue. Some players like then know nothing about the scandal yet their bright careers are now affected. For truth, this monster called zifa must lift its ban these players. We have Tefo Mashamaite who 4 me is a gud defender en Lawler waiting. I still think Ritchie is a gud player. So dis 3 players won't make a difference. Katsande will obviously be relegated 2 de bench or stands since the young en genious Baloyi is ohk from injury.

Stan & Mno!

U guys promote corruption, which in itself is crime.

Why should Fifa have a heart when people have clear conscious of their transgressions?

Football authorities in South Africa have been harsh on corruption & if you are a South African you will remember that.Mr Rabali was banned for life, referee scandal that rocked South Africa & if you feel people must be let off for crime than it has never affected you.Only if you benefited on it will you have that feelings.

Please remind me of what Kaizer did during the Rothmans.

The problem with having assumptions with what happened & evidence that get put on the table is totally different.

If this guys gets found guilty & they don't defend their case then the law must be upheld.

If anyone did something in the past & he wasn't brought to book it will always be allegations & you know that as well.

Hansi Cronje was banned for live in cricket,Hershelle Gibbs,Roger Telemacus & Nicky Boje faced different lesser fines on that.

The bottom line is those who get involved in criminality in corruption got prosecuted.

Please tell us what Kaizer did.

Chiefs is a family business & their intereset is on a family profit & I just sense it feels good for them to spend less on cheaper players & at the end of the year when Pirates celebrate cups, they celebrate the fact that they made more money than Pirates in not buying success,by saving on wages.

This ofcourse is a cruel decision for us supporters.

Regarding the Zim players:If u follow international news ur probably aware that a 19 year old called Mohammad Amir/Pakistan cricket player was today released from English prison for match fixing.

If this players are guilty they must be punished, otherwise the intergrity of Zimbabwe will keep being suspected.

He passed the Nhlangana border in Swaziland until he settled in Moza in the province called Gaza. He had called Nghungunyani, when he died Nghungunyane left the Gaza province, crossed Limpopo river to now Limpopo provence. He settled in the area of Thulamahashe in Bush. He had two sons, Muzila na Mawewe. enough about that. These guys are Zulu. They and called Shagaans becuase of their grand father Soshagaan. In KZN you find Ngubane in Limpopo you find Ngobeni. My brother, i have nothing against Shangan people, its just that, they have an infirior factor, they are looking down on themselves as if the world owe them something. Zulus are teased everyday, Xhosa's have earn bad stigmas but it is never an issue.

It is an unfortunate scenario for these poor players. If you look at their country's currency, economy, poverty level, leadership, politics, incentives for representing their own country, etc, I can't really blame them that much. Fortunately my team is not affected at all.
