Phil Masinga: We must judge Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane fairly

Masinga: We must judge Pitso fairly

Posted: 2011-10-11 11:43

Phil Masinga tells KickOff.com that Pitso Mosimane must keep his job as Bafana Bafana head coach, amid growing calls for his removal.

The bone of contention is that Safa and Mosimane seemingly erred in interpreting the CAF rules pertaining to the qualifying process for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations, which cost South Africa a place in next year's tournament.

However, Masinga, who is South Africa's fourth all-time leading scorer, with 18 goals, has leapt to Mosimane's defence, saying suggestions that the coach must be fired on the basis of misinterpreting the rules is not only unfair, but could be a step backwards for the national team.

Do you think 'Jingles' should go? Click HERE to have your say.

Masinga says: "It is of course an embarrassment that Safa and Pitso didn't know the rules, but I think Pitso deserves to continue.

"We shouldn't base our arguments based on the rules issue on its own, but also look at Pitso's record as coach since he took over after the World Cup.

"I think he has done enough to keep his job, based on the results. His record is not bad at all and I think he's done well. If you fire Pitso, who are you going to get? Let him continue," Masinga argues.

Mosimane is now approximately 13 months into a four-year contract he signed in July 2010.

"If you fire Pitso, who are you going to get? Let him continue," Masinga argues......

Aggggh there we go again, Chippa, and you too? Do you somewhat think this Best Coach would ask you to assist him at Bafana? Forget it boy, Pitso brought this unto himself.Where were you when Pitso went on record that he is the Best Coach ever, to coach Bafana?Where were you when your Best Coach Ever, danced along with his players, whilst he did not know he failed the nation?
Chippa, this is the 1st time I ever learn that a Coach(Best one for that matter) would instruct the players to play for a DRAW at home, but then, maybe, just maybe, we did not know that was tha tactic of Best coaches out there. If Pitso keeps his job, then I can officially ask for a piece of the cake @ Bafana as well, for doing what(you're probably asking), for doing nothing and claiming I'm the best, like Pitso, who managed to fool even you Chippa.

KaMashobana: 2011-10-11 12:24

We are aware that u gang of 1996 who won afcon by default( when SA decided to bar Nigeria) think u know too much. Pitso has not only failed as head coach but as 3rd in charge to BB under Perreira and and the guitar man.So are u saying by not qualifying for Afcon 2012 in group that includes SLeone and Niger is not 'too bad a record'. Chipa stop smoking illegal substances there in Mohlakeng.

msanda: 2011-10-11 13:11

Firstly Masinga looks like crap on this pic. Secondly, Pitso needs to evaulate his "soldiers", they let him down. He does not need to quit. His players need to be dropped.

fayani: 2011-10-11 13:16

what goes arround, really goes arround. what you do on the left hand side, must be done on the right hand side. the way Aron Mokoena was thrown, it was bad. not to say he was doing good, but a bennefit game was not going to hurt. do unto others, as you will want them to do unto you. Safa failed us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!if Pitso leaves, then Safa must also leave.

Paul: 2011-10-11 13:16

Phil looks drunk here, plus i heard he is on bottle 24/7

Must i trust this man opinion, i dont think so, i smell black label

So Pitso must go, until someone sober says something better, please Mr edito screen people before you publish their opinions, especially those pack of dogs waiting to take SAFA to their houses

Haai man Phillemon i also thought u-Pitso can take us somewhere but from the look of things i have doubts, judging by the squad we have, we not scaring anyone i think the other teams are getting bored now to play against us. Pitso must go now period. Neh Phillemon!! Uzoswaba

SOUTH AFRICA IS JUST A BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY. JUST IMAGINE ZAMBIA JUST FIRED THEIR COACH AFTER QUALIFYING BUT IN SOUTH AFRICA YOU CAN STILL HAVE YOUR JOB FOR NOT QUALIFYING.

champ nespray is a movie star look-alike coach: 2011-10-11 13:32

luk at his tired eyes. this legend is drunk. interviewd by KO chimpanzee in juniors taven

masinga sit back relax let the intellectuals voice relevant points

1. bafana has been learning wen pareira was here n they are said 2 b learning afta he left. bafana in the process learned the wrongs(wrong tactics, wrong choice of playas, wrong adminstration, wrong game plan).
2. bafana are always satisfed wth being the second best. they shuld have gone 4 a kill on saty in their backyard against a weak team
3. pisto have never coached one of the big teams. he is made 2 learn 2 absorb presure in the national team
4. he is tachnically bankrupt, his tactics in games are always questionable, wrong substitutions
5. SA playas strong points is 2 attack yet pisto defend them the whole 90 min in their turfs. i wonder how they play away.
6. pisto is in the position undesevedly so, he made it through internship
7. pisto will apply the same failing tactics applied by his mentor in the world cup
8. world cup wiining coach resigned bcos he failed, pisto shuld do the same n follow in his futsteps
9. pisto won nothing at supersport. what hapened 2 this team wen he left? it made it clear hat pisto used failng tactics bcos gavin won psl titles wth the same playas
10. afta the world cup, pisto shuld have introduced more youngstas instead he put in the bulk of the failing world cup team 4 the qualfiers. wen will pisto introduce playas 2 the national team.
11. pisto is pareira inside him only being black on the outside.

APPROACHES TO FIX THE PAREIRA PISTO MESS

1. get a new tachnically gifted coach, sumone african or dutch preferably krol who instead of learning will work towads rectifying the wrongs of the past. afta learning comes corrections wen the are wrongs
2. get a coach wth pep gurdiola mentality, that goals win u games not the defensive tactics
3. SA can pay, they must get a coach wth international xperince, sumone who coached national teams n big teams b4 (krol comes 2 mind, he coached egypt, pirates n esperance(if not mistaken))
4. a gud coach must have plan b in case plan a fail. most of u will agree that bucs won the trebble via plan b n spot on substitutions
5. we need a coach who can utilise SA playas 2 their strengh, having said that papic kosta comes into mind. bucs played the most attacking futball unda his leadership. papic n krol can cmpliment each other well, one working wth attackers while other is commited to defence
6. we must hire a coach based on previous xperince n necesary qualifications. our national team must not b used as a learning 2 coaches in practice
7. we want a coach who is tactically gifted n can read the game well

AFTA GIVING DETAILED APPROACHES, LET ME NOW TOUCH ON THE OTHER FACTORS THAT LED 2 OUR DOOOM

1. Pisto is a silent moron who does not luk fit enough 2 handle playas misbehavior n disclose sum of the obstacles in public. coaches like vv are needed in the national team 4 his openness. he mention things poeple want 2 know but shy from them wen they hear. vv always cried in public about bafana internationals at team level.
we have krol who got rid of teko the darling of the sapotas 4 the sake of the team. this two are real gentlemens

pisto never coached the so-caled stas i his team. can he miraculously handle them in the national team. remember he interact wth this playas on a short period, lets say a week b4 games

MASINGA: leave the green bottle b4 u adres the fans. dnt take us 4 granted. u were never even a star in your time. wen the likes of goerge weah, taribo west etc are mentioned, ur name does not appear. so who will u misled having scored sum fluke goals 4 the national team. lastly wats ur occupation?

I HOPE MY OBSERVATION BECOMES UR EYE-OPENER. YES WE NEED KROL N WE NEED HIM AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. SAFA HAS LED 2 SUM OF US SUFFERING FROM PSYCHOLOGICAL COST/DISORDERS. LETS TURN AGAINST THEM.

AN ASOCIATION WITHOUGHT KNOWING THE RULES. PALOOOOKA OF THE YEAR

Dan ka-Mkhaliphi: 2011-10-11 13:35

@littel mermaid & @msanda, niyangibulala bafethu yhoooooo!! He sure does look like he have just been celebrating with the team that won the black label cup and a free supply of the product for 12 months hhahahahahaha

Mgugudi: The Treble Addict: 2011-10-11 13:45

People like Masinga fail to look at the bigger picture. The issue here is not about misinterpretation of rules by Pitso but about facing reality as a nation. I personally do not blame Pitso that much about misapprehension of the rule, his job is to coach BB & ensure that we become a winning nation. It’s an open secret that most players are not well educated & interpretation of laws & its clauses disadvantages even the most educated. Why do we then expect law fundi out of them? I put the blame on the doors of SAFA which should have clarified the issue to the coach through the office of the CEO.

The issue of contention is multifold. The 1st one is “where has Pitso been or doing prior to his appointment?” Pitso has been part of the BB set up that embarrassed the nation in 2010 by becoming the 1st host nation to be eliminated in the 1st round. Lesser naturally talented nations such as Korea & Japan did better. Pitso is then part of the problem & failure that has been there & definitely is / will not bring new ideas to BB.

Second like many SA coaches has only excelled in friendlies. SA must go beyond that stage & win real games.

Third, mediocrity. When we failed in the WC, focus was shifted to the goal that Shabba scored instead of dealing with the shame that is BB. Shabba became an instant celebrity & lost focus because he had achieved everything in SA terms. When Soccer zone asked viewers what was their proud moment of 2010, a lot of sms’s were about Shabba’s goal. This tells me that mediocrity has been encoded in our genes. (NB, this not meant to offend KC fans but just pointing out mediocrity)

Fourth, we have not passed a stage where we have stopped learning. B4 the WC when we got hiding, statements of we are learning & preparing for the WC were accepted with no contempt. We are cry babes that would point out at any fault a ref would make in our defence, complain about accommodation, and pitch etc. instead of preparing accordingly. For instance, if we know we will play in a bad pitch, why not practice in some of our worst stadiums? Change the technical approach to the game, etc. Those who remember the journey of the 1995 Pirates team would remember such preparations which also needed mental strength.

Fifthly, we over achieved early without sound structures. It’s about time that we start with the ABC’s. And lastly, favoritism is drugging our nation backwards not only in BB but also through media where agendas to push their favorite players ahead of deserving ones is a daily thing.

Mr. Masinga, what we need as a country is total overhaul of San football that will strive on excellence, praise & reward great achievers (not just single goal scorers), have sound development structure of players, coaches & administrators alike etc.

It is not about Pitso.

galaxyofstars: 2011-10-11 13:46

Without undermining ur local coaches but they are not ready to coach BB same with nigeria Siasia messed up. Look at our big teams how about the national team.

galaxyofstars: 2011-10-11 13:48

Pitso will never resign unless he will continue to get a fat check, pecks, benefits, attention, fame and being in charge thats what he is staying for not BB/Nation at heart.

I mean the guy was making noise about beating strugling Nigeria & Egypt in useless matches.

Pitso talks too-much & I feel he takes things for granted if he failed to secure a place in sixteen seats, how will he do in securing a place for five seats. If anyone feels that fans are being harsh or unfair to Pitso then, they should join the ones that says SA National Team wont be seen in 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Some of us have already made peace with the fact that we'll watch the world cup without seeing SA team. So Masinga let Pitso go on with his arrogance & see where will it take us as a nation. He is a "good" caoch he said it himself!

KING?: 2011-10-11 14:01

When i criticized Pitso, i was insulted and reminded how of an idiot i was and did not have patriotism.

Attitude will always reflects leadership. both Nematendani and Mosimane did n't deserve their appointment.
one was elected unopposed as a result of cheap politics by Joordan.
The other was a colour appointment based on cheap and sick politics. Pitso is a product of failure, meaning he is part of the problem.

i am going to say this again - There is no country in the world that has talent more than what SA has, its a pity we cannot nature, develop and manage it properly. Players who where suppose to represent our country at the 2010WC where swallowed by life circumstances eg Scara, Pule Mahlangu, Leremi,Mabizela,Malatsi,Khanye,Nunence,Nkambule,Zongo,Chabangu

Why do we laugh at these talented soccer players when they go astray, due to soccer bosses exposing these boys to money, girls, drugs and cars. Most of these boys come from a poor background and are vulnerable. How good players have we lost due to ill behavior and what has been done about it.

The problem is not with the players, the problem is SAFA and team Manager/coach.

SABELO : 2011-10-11 14:02

SAFA must organize 5 away friendly matches against strong african opponents for PITSO n if he wins less than 3, then he must go.

goodguy happy cutin: 2011-10-11 14:02

what can you expect from Phil? they are bra's. What's the best thing that Pitso did exactly looking at our record since he took over? I do not see much of a difference from Carlos team. He would bring in new players for the sake of calling them but no matter how good they were, the tried and tested players playing in non-competitive leagues would get preference. We only beat Burkina Faso convincingly coz they did not have their best players. We failed to beat Niger, a team that lost to predominantly U-23 of Egypt, when it mattered most and we claim he has done a lot? Ajax CT has some fantastic youngsters who could fit in perfectly but he overlooked them. I can go on and on....

talking about development champ, i think the PSL shuld do something about chimps. its out of order 4 a PSL team 2 play games withought having a development side. this team will then resort 2 buying foreign nationals n this deprive youngstas of the oppotunity 2 play in the PSL.

a psl soca team withougt any development side? i know its a family business but sum things are very clear 4 people ague about. kaizer n bobby make decisions against the developing of SA futball.

I differ with on this one, there is no way a coach can afford to play in a competition not knowing the rules of that competition.Infact u cant plan properly without knows the rules and regulations. Its unacceptable. Think of a local coach in a local cup competition (home and away) who does not know whether in the event of a draw, there would be a penalty shoot-out or replay. How does he prepair.

Besides, its all lies by the SAFA CEO that the technical team misinterpreted the rule 14.1. How do you mis-interprate such straight forward english. They simple didnt bother reading the rules. And that is criminal.

BAFANA RECORD SINCE JULY 2010
South Africa 1 Ghana 0 (friendly international, 11/8/2010)
Ghana sent a locall based team,CHAN team, andwe played with our full team, the only people who rated this win was Pitso and his players

South Africa 2 Niger 0 (2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier,
4/9/2010)
We should have scored more than 4 goals in this match

Sierra Leone 0 South Africa 0 (2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, 10/10/2010)

I don't care who says what,we should beat any Siera leonne side home and away, total failure

South Africa 0 USA 1 (friendly international, 17/11/2010)
Played against the weekest and youngest USA team with our strongest side and still lose?Sad thing is the coach was happy with this perfomance.
South Africa 2 Kenya 0 (friendly international, 9/2/2011)
Again Kenya one of the weakest team in the coninent, send their weakest team and Pitso and his players ceebrated after this useless win

South Africa 1 Egypt 0 (2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, 26/3/2011)
The only gud result from Pitso
Egypt 0 South Africa 0 (2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, 5/6/2011)

Fair result, but with killer instinct we could have won this game

South Africa 3 Burkina Faso 0 (friendly international, 10/8/2011)

We all know that if Burkina Faso send theirstrong side, there was no way we could have won this game. How do you win 3-0 to burkinaand lose to Niger?

Niger 2 South Africa 1 (2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, 4/9/2011)

A game that we should have won convingly,I don't care whether it was played on mars or pluto,we should win against Niger.

@ Kamashobane,

What I meant is that Pitso is no lawyer, his interpretation is based on his limited knowledge. An establishment such as SAFA must have people knowledgeble enough to explain what the rules say to the coach.

The fact that SAns & soccer fundis misinterpreted / did not know of the rules sustantiate my defence for Pitso. It is senior SAFA officials that sign for amendments of rules & their application thereof not the coach.

Pitso failed our once beloved team "Bafana bafana now Omajayvana". He firstly failed when he was with Perreira and Satana and they all agreed that its wa a blessing in disguise so they can prepare for World cup, and they failed again in the World cup by exiting in the first round. Now he failed to qualify us for Orange; I hope they wont be saying blessing in disguise to prepare for Brazil 2014.

Mfana Wa Style: 2011-10-11 15:38

King, which best talent are you talking about?

Anyway, Pitso must continue his good work at Bafana, period!

KING?: 2011-10-11 15:46

Mfana Wa Style and Tititi: Dont limit your love for soccer to PSL and NFD, There is so much happening in this country.

Give yourself sometime and attend township,Prison football and high school soccer games and see how much talent this country has. Its a pity people like K Zondo,Pitso,Mashaba dont have the time.

Mopheme: 2011-10-11 16:01

PITSO IS PAYING THE PRICE FOR BEEING ARROGANT, HE HAS FAILED FINISH AND CLAR. IF HE CANNOT TAKE US TO AFCON DO WE REALY THINK HE WILL TAKE US TO WORLD CUP. HIS RECORD IS VERY POOR AND IS THERE FOR EVERY ONME TO SEEE

Vez'ikhanda: 2011-10-11 16:11

Pitso might be a good coach but not for the national team coz His selection criteria for the team is questionable and biased. He has got a big pool of players to select from but He sticks to off-form players and overseas based bench warmers. His best results away from home is a draw meaning He was gonna be eliminated in the group stages at the AFCON since it wont be playing here in South Africa. I think a coach who can give S.A better results is the likes of Gordon Igesund and Gavin Hunt because they seem to be better motivators to player because they are able to get good results even if they don't have the better squad in the league. The national team needs a coach that can make things happen not a coach that get satisfied by a draw.

Philani Duma : 2011-10-11 16:43

Pisto Mosimane z a arrogant man and z time for him to stap down his tools and go back to school of coaching b4 safa show him door.Masinga your friend z not a national coach material finish and klaar!

It is time for all soccer loving South Africans to reflect and accept that mediocrity will never be good enough for a country of such abundance in resources. We have once again managed to become the laughing stock of the entire continent. Pitso has been in the National Team set-up for 5+ years as caretaker coach and as an assistant coach. During this period, the national team has not met a single mandate whether it be qualifying for the Afcon or the second round of the World Cup played on home soil. Pitso and the entire techinal team should be sacked with immediate effect. I mean, the league was on halt for 2 weeks for Pitso to implement a winning strategy, however they only managed a dissapointing draw and a well rehe****d Jika Majika dance. Pitso played Gaxa at rightback, not for the first time, whereas a national team should have 3 players in each position due to the wider pool of selection. These are the basics for any national team. Furthermore, Shakes Mashaba was sacked from this position after having not lost a single game. Shakes qualified the u20s in '97 for a World Youth Tournament and 3 years for the Olympics where we humiliated a gifted Brazilian team boasting the likes of Ronaldinho and Alex. Shakes should take over the reigns and still remain the u23 coach. This will promote a uniform style of play and a team to be proud of for 8+ years.
'No Bafana until Shabba, Majoro and Parker retire from international football.'

Mfana Wa Style: 2011-10-11 16:52

SAFA must just stop to appeal this decision for AFCON 2012 to re-instate Bafana Bafana in AFCON 2012. However they are free to appeal against the 14.1 rule itself to avoid future misinterpretations and also the way these rules were drafted or compiled.

According to me CAF also failed to draft the rules that are clear and unchallengeable. Article 14 list of rules (14.1 - 14.7) are clear but they do not have a clear direction, they are just listed.

I think CAF was supposed to get a professional expect to draft or check the rules before being implemented not just anyone who seems to understand to draft the rules. SAFA has a right to challenge the rules because they are very ambiguous and anyone can just manipulate them to favour him.

It was supposed to be clearly stated that the rules will be applied as per the list. They should have said that under the conditions mentioned above clause number 14.1 will apply first followed by clause 14.2 all the way down to 14.7 as listed.

There would be no problems of this nature, some people complaining the about this and that, because everything would be there for everyone to see. SAFA has a right to appeal because clause 14.2 favours them. They could clearly see that these rules have loop holes in them. We need to remember that if you list clauses without mentioning the procedure on how are they going to work, you have done nothing. You need to specify which rule will apply first, failing for you to do so you will be challenging complaints from groups involved.

Once again at clause 14.1 they should have clarified this clause because looking at it right now it has got a lot of loops holes that can be used to challenge it. According to me or any clever person out there this is not "Head to Head" rule but "Head to Heads" or "Heads to Heads" rule. Another loop hole notable her is the elimination of the last team "Egypt" as if it was not involved in the games.

"I think CAF must just employ me to oversee the drafting of rules of CAF competition". Together we can build African continent soccer to be most powerful and compete against the world soccer starting from the Administration part.

Just ****yse these rules below and be the judge.

Article 14

In case of equality of points between two or more teams, after all the
group matches, the ranking of the teams shall be established according
to the following criteria:

14.1 Greater number of points obtained in the matches between the concerned
teams;
14.2. Best goal difference in the matches between the concerned teams;
14.3. Greater number of goals scored in the group matches between the
concerned teams;
14.4. Greater number of away goals scored in the direct matches between the concerned teams;
14.5. Goal difference in all the group matches;
14.6. Greatest number of goals scored in all the group matches;
14.7. A drawing of lots by the Organising Committee of CAF.

Great interpretation of the rules and i join you in agreeing that safa has a case here. Unless if anyone can prove that it is a common knowledge practice in law that 14.1 supercede 14.2 and other then safa is going to win the case cause it looks like a whole lot of criteria favour them. this is why i love kickoff website, we have some great ****yst though the editorial is bad and sometime emotional.

Pitso is the best thing that ever happened to Bafana

Mukza: 2011-10-12 09:43

@nespray
Masinga is not a Chiefs Legend wena where did you get that? he is a sunclowns legend all sonclowns look drunk, look at their coach if u dont believe me and back to the topic, Pitso is arrogant and our players are lazy period. Its time we introduce youngsters, look at egypt and tell me where they will be in the next few years with those young boys and SA still depends on tried, tested and failed players.

ooisthuizen: 2011-10-12 10:38

Damora: 2011-10-12 14:25

Stupid comments from Chipa, Bafana was there before Pitso and ther'll be Bafana after Pitso. The results is since he took over as a coach Bafana failed to qualify for the AFCON.Which results are talking about,Phil? We cann't continue celebrating mediocrity in this country, period.

Lungelo.owen@gmail.com : 2011-10-12 15:16

Excuse me but I think Masinga is off the mark. SAFA as a whole is a mess and Pitso is no exception to it. He comes up with stupid tactics all the time. This man failed Supersport and I've always said if a good coach can replace him, Supersports was gonna be a force to be reckoned with. We need someone who believes in our style of football (flair) and not just any South African coach. I think I can do a better job coaching Bafana and I'm not kidding!

Donald Duck: 2011-10-12 16:32

Dis dude should lay off de booze, then he won't come here and tell us this crap. The issue is not misreading de rule, it's failing 2win our home games.

Tetete.Makhunga: 2011-10-13 11:33

Thula wena CHIPPA sezadlula lezonsuku...!

This Guy(Pitso) must go man, if you win friendly game and lose official games, what do u expect soccer fans to say, nothing but to give u a boot man! Pitso failed us, those are the grounds. Even in those friendlies he won, there wasnt much other than playing deffensive football and wait for Mphela to score one goal.

Bafana(Pitso's tactics) is not portraying the South African soccer, the type of game that is played by SA top team these days(Pirates, Chiefs, Sundows, Ajax etc) is way better than what bafana can offer. Pitso is always defensive with one striker be it at home or away.

Well, Pitso I ve got news for you, best coaches in the world win away and home games, not what u have been doing with ur Bafana. Sadly, AFCON was not going to be held in RSA meaning that u were not going to win even a single match as u have tendency of only winning home games.

SAFA stop nagging, Pitsos Bafana is still going to disappoint us further in the AFCON, rather replace the coach(I know u r good in this SHAKES MASHABA is my eye-witness) and focus getting the coach that will win official games not friendlies.

Just GFY with your defensive game plans wene PITSO! NXXXX
