Jomo Sono defends his Pitso Mosimane remarks

Bra J claims he was 'protecting' Pitso

Posted: 2010-07-22 16:40

Jomo Sono has reacted angrily after he was slammed for suggesting that new Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane could have applied for the job.

‘The Troublemaker’ was quoted as saying Mosimane should not have been handed the job on a silver platter. “Why should he be entitled to take over when other people go through the issue of applying? Why don't you open it up, let everybody who feels can coach apply. Why give it to him?”

Soccer columnists such as Bareng-Batho Kortjaas blasted Sono for “playing the man” and “not the ball”, suggesting comments Sono had made were unfair to Mosimane, who had been assistant coach with Bafana for four years and had been “plucked” out of SuperSport United and “with the promise that he would learn the ropes and one day ascend to the position”.

“It is rich coming from someone who didn't bat an eyelid in accepting the same job three times without applying once”, wrote Kortjaas in response to Sono’s reaction to Safa’s decision to name Mosimane as the sole candidate for the job.

Sono, who was part of the technical committee that endorsed Mosimane’s appointment, has fired back and hard.

“There are times when local sports journalists behave as if they are experts, even on issues that they seem to have little understanding or background knowledge of,” he writes on the club’s website.

“They inadvertently expose themselves for what they really are – people who are just out to destroy while pretending to support the incumbent. My take on [Mosimane’s appointment], which is still the same and will remain so, was that the position should have been thrown wide open so as to allow those who believe they were up to it to apply for the vacancy. The reason I called for others to apply was just simple clean governance and transparency,” Sono says.

“It should also be noted that on the occasions that I had been head coach of the national team was on a caretaker basis. I stand corrected, but I still have to hear of anybody applying for a caretaker of anything job… I want to put it on record that I do not want to coach the national team – as they say, ‘I have been there, done that and bought the T-shirt’.

“The only explanation that can come out of this uncalled for attack on me and my person is that people are trying to look for scoops from Mosimane. They want to be seen as protecting him and once he fails them they will be the first to hammer him,” Sono claims.

“This smacks of a plot hatched by a group of three or four who sat down and agreed that I should be ‘put in my place’. Journalists do not check their facts or do research before they commit to print are doing the game a great disservice while they prance about misleading the nation,” he says.

The Ezenkosi boss claims his comments were intended to protect Mosimane. “Congratulations to Mosimane and I must add that what I said was to make things much easier and safer for him. That is before he is reminded that the job was given to him on a platter and that he did not deserve it as much more deserving candidates were not given the opportunity to apply,” he adds.

BBK the best u could have done it was to ask Big J n get ur facts together before saying all that rubbish, the last time he coached bafana he never aplied but roped in as a caretaker,we do not apply to caretake!!ah some people are amaizing, bbk Im dissapointed

Jomo mst stard with cosmos, instead of always hand picking himself let othorz apply bra J. Mayb u r afraid they r worthy and more deserving to coach cosmos than u r.

The Ghost: 2010-07-22 17:22

I have in the past disagreed with the great U Mjomane on several occasions even though he is my childhood hero, but this time the man is spot on. Yes, we all know that Pitso is the man for the job, but for transparency sake to paraphrase Nkalakata yes applications could have been taken.

HlatseBoy Wa Lekhosi: 2010-07-22 17:24

In all fairness I think the job should have been advertised like anyother public vacancy since the national team belongs to the nation.
Things cannot and must never in the future be run like private sector mean while they belong to the whole nation.

Ramon: 2010-07-22 17:29

Jeerrrr, jomo is jealous of Pitso, people who knw what they want interms of football dnt invite applications but rather head hunt. Guez u would'nt knw that nw or would u? U've made urself a life time coach of ur own pathetic team, shame on u Jomo. Maybe u should conteplate giving people u say r willing to coach and should've bin given a chance with our national team to coach ur relegated team, hw abt that?

nkosia : 2010-07-22 18:07

Well, well Mjomana again. He might be right but for the person he is,will always court controversy.I believe him though this time around solely cause he stood no chance in being our coach, having relegated his own team.

fire: 2010-07-22 20:49

Spot on Mjomana! The black prince has spoken. I do not know how many times I have raised this issue of upstarts undermining our legends. Cosmos might be a yoyo team lately, I have never doubted Mjomana's sincere love and honeasty, in itself a service to his country. I raised the same issues with one African brother, Eto, when he reacted like a child- instead of behaving like a captain and a classy player that he is- calling Roger and old man for criticizing him. We are still waiting with hawk eyes, Pitso. Me and the BBKs of this world.

Lufuno: 2010-07-23 07:52

A good comment Bra J. South African journalist dont check their facts when they commit to print and they normaly don't do research. I think even if SAFA wanted to give Pitso a post they must give everyone an opportunity to apply. They are right to appoint him I agree 100% with them but for governance and transparency they should have advertise it. After short listing they have facts i.e they spent a lot of money training him as the assistance of Bafana Bafana.

To those like MK, Mnaka and Thando we are talking of national interest here, play the ball not a man. Cosmos and National team is two different things. Check your facts

Stonza: 2010-07-23 07:54

on point there mjomane!!!

Maestro KC: 2010-07-23 08:04

Thats rich coming from you Bra J...you just want people to waste their time applying for jobs, in the name of good governance, knowing very well who will get the job...this happens a lot in government, Pitso was promised this job a long time ago by the previous SAFA regime and now you, want other coaches to apply so that you should be seen as good corporate citizens? ag maan please...

I think I'm gona give this guy a million bugs. He is so true. Jomo is just suffering from jeolous. BUKANJE LENTO AYISHO BEFORE

“Why should he be entitled to take over when other people go through the issue of applying? Why don't you open it up, let everybody who feels can coach apply. Why give it to him?”

and now this is what he is saying

UJOMO UYANYA LAPHA.

Guys I see some of you are saying Jomo was right t say this crap before. I disagree to you guys. This Jomo is just a buffoon who wants to be involved in every thing and now he comes out to say he was making it easy for Pitso.....HE IS LYING

What if Pitso di not get the job im sure he was going sing another tune.........nx nx!!! HE IS A USELESS BIG FAT ASSS!!! WITH LOT OF NOISE

Ntlahla: 2010-07-23 08:22

It looks like in every circle of this country people get failed by their lack of objectivity, be it sports or politics. What Jomo is saying is very factual, when Pitso looses his first two games(I hope not) the very same people are going to be calling for Pitso's name, pointing fingers at the way he was appointed, saying he did not deserve the job.....

Maestro KC: 2010-07-23 08:26

The whole process had flaws, starting with pitsos appointment as an assistant. Was he promised a national team coach job then? If so, what were the expected outcomes from his involvement with th national team as an assistant? Were those outcomes achieved? What criteria was used to measure if the outcomes were achieved. At least safa shld have been transparent about these. During the time pitso was assistant bafana didnt achieve anything worth noting. Not qualifying for the nations cup and crashing out in the group stages of the WC cant be taken as achievements. What did he learn? What did safa ask him to learn? Did he learn whatever it is they wanted him to? Im not against his appointment but we need transparency. Anyway Goodluck Jingles, we cant blame you, u didnt employ yourself

Putsununu: 2010-07-23 08:41

whats wrong with this old man, he is no different to Khoza, they want to be involved in everything.. my advice to u tata is to concentrate on your team coz its not easy ehlathini

Sipho: 2010-07-23 08:34

You have asked pertinent questions, remember that this is a new administration and they have tried to get away from appointing Pitso but becuase of promises made by the unseated administration, Pitso cannot be left in the lurch as there was a binding agreement with SAFA.

As for objectives that were set, I think the only one who had them was the head coach and can you really measure what Pitso has learnt in paper? or would you measure that by giving him an opportunity to show if he has learned anything?

Time will only tell if Pitso learnt from the miserable failures of his bosses.

This BBK guy is full of himself and think that he is untouchable just like Jomo. Now they both look like fools. Actually Jomo was not protecting Pitso, Jomo was protecting himself because he is in that commitee which was supposed to make the final decision. That commitee did not want to go with Pitso anymore.

Bongs: 2010-07-23 08:46

I understand bra J's point but @ the same time I feel he is somewhat jelous! When Pitso started to assist in the national team as an Assistant it was mentioned that he is there to learn so that in the future he can lead. Now that the time has come why do we need more applicants for the post because everything was set for him to take over! Why do we need other coaches to apply for the job when we have someone groomed for the position! Bra J you are wrong this time baba! Let give Pitso a chance without giving him hard time because uzogcina esesaba nokwenza izinguquko eqenjini lesizwe!

KaMashobana: 2010-07-23 08:47

Well said bra J, the best candidate should always be given the job after candidates have applied and scrutinised........yes again your are right nobody has ever applied for a caretaker job. All these critics are on your case bcos you always say the truth, some are fighting wars on b1/2 of their masters....AND CAN GO TO HELL.

Champ "Superbrand": 2010-07-23 08:53

Was Jomo going to give the other candidates who applied a fair chance? What was going to happen to the promise SAFA made to Pitso? Jomo is indeed a trouble maker. The likes of BBK are the only ones who can sort him out. Jomo is so arrogant, he things he knows it all and can stick his ugly nose everywhere.

Maestro KC you are 100% correct, it time Pitso show us what he has learned. We cannot say because Santana and Peirera failed and therefore Pitso failed his training! The head Coaches always had the final word and now that he is taking over and he will be the one responsible and accountable then we can judge him!

Bhakafication!

Vuyani: 2010-07-23 08:55

Bra J is using the incorrect platform to voice out his concern. He was part of the technical committee that endorsed Mosimane’s appointment. He should have advice SAFA to advertise the post even though the decision has been made. In RSA most companies do advertise the post knowing who is going to fill the gap.
I see bra J as ‘The Troublemaker’ The country is united after the successful world cup now this. This could be his way of telling SAFA that bra J should part of any decision makers within SAFA.

Bongs: 2010-07-23 09:02

Geoff: 2010-07-23 09:03

Bra J you are wrong, you always create controvesy,National teams appoint their man(Headhunt) based on their vision,Parreira said the same thing, he did not apply, same as Capello,German Coach list goes on and on,I can tell you Jomo is the one who is waiting on the sodeline for Pisto to fail, when He fails he will say I told you so that this position should have been advertised, Give us a list of those coaches and again where is the time to go through those interview, We are playin in 2 weeks time.Jomo you are greedy and jealouse

Champ "Superbrand": 2010-07-23 09:03

Pitso will not be immune to criticism just because he was groomed or given the job without applying or competition. Yes, he will be criticized when things go wrong as all the other coaches were. No amout of protecting by Jomo will rescue Pitso from criticism. I hope Bra J. is taking notes.

Samuel: 2010-07-23 10:59

I agree with Jomo Sono being a Cheifs fan for the record. I think SAFA missed an opportunity to be transparent, adhere to process, governance practise. I for one do not believe that Pitso is an achiever, but I will support him our coach. I also do not belive that he is the best accredited coach locally, but I will support my country. I wish he could have been kept in the system though but not as our national coach for Bafana. However I wish him all teh success.

Njia4life: 2010-07-24 14:23

Pisto as the coach of Bafana is the end of the Bafana.....who is Pisto...football is not Orlando pirates and chiefs....lets see what will happen. The best thing he can do is to emulate France, USA, Swiss and others that have African players in their team, otherwise no way out for Bafana-Bafana. Any way Bra J was 100% correct, the should have leave the application process to run-openly, maybe the top guys there want to make use of the opportunity because Carlos made use of the opportunities by taken the guys to Brazil to his friends club-side...shame

prism: 2010-07-26 12:09
