New Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane today unveiled his four-year programme for the national team.
The vision is to prepare and build a strong, competitive and respectable team for the country in preparation for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon/ quatorial Guinea and the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
Mosimane outlined the following steps as a basis for achieving Vision 2014:
• Scouting and monitoring of local and international players
• Interaction with PSL coaches to discuss CAF/Fifa dates and player availability for the national team
• Interaction with the coaches both local and international about the plan and the vision
• Recommend that PSL teams utilise a maximum of three foreign players
• Agree on at least two Under-23 players to be in the starting line-up of all the matches in South Africa
• Ensure common vision and understanding with the junior national teams as they are the direct feeder to the senior team
• Recommend that strictly Under-23 players be utilized for Cosafa games to gain international experience
• To send players that are earmarked for Bafana Bafana to participate in the African Nations Championships (CHAN)
• Development of the National, Provincial and Regional Under-20 Leagues
• Revival of a Reserve League
Mosimane applauded the PSL for their commitment and support in accommodating Bafana’s programme in the League’s calendar, saying that his continuous engagement with the League is the approach he will apply to other stakeholders in the football fraternity.
“It will take a collective effort for Vision 2014 to be realised. In the African context it takes an entire village to raise a child, hence my resolve to tap into available resources in our country,” he explained.
“For instance, football greats like Jomo Sono and Kalusha Byalwa served in the Fifa technical study group during the recent World Cup in our country, and it is that experience and their observations that would be crucial in our planning.
“Siphiwe Tshabalala was called up to Bafana Bafana while playing in the First Division, so we need to look into avenues like that for special players in the lower leagues. National and professional coaches must become central in the national discourse on technical matters at appropriate forums like the envisaged Technical Symposium.
“We need to walk the talk as coaches. I will consult extensively, but spearhead Vision 2014 from a technical point of view. I will rely on the leadership of Safa to support me administratively, and I will also count on the support of all South Africans as we embark on this project of National and International importance.”
Safa CEO Leslie Sedibe says the decision to kick off Vision 2014 with an international friendly against Ghana demonstrates the Association’s commitment to improve the standard of South African football.
“The road to 2014 will not be an easy one. We are mindful of the challenges ahead, especially after having staged a very successful World Cup in our country,” he says.
“Our choice of opponents in this preparatory stage is to ensure that our players continue with the momentum of the World Cup. We are also sending a message to our team that there is no room for complacency when we face any of our opponents in the qualifiers.
“We must prepare adequately for Niger and Sierra Leone, just as we will prepare for the African champions Egypt in our group.”
South Africa hosts Ghana at Soccer City on August 11, with kick-off at 20h35. Tickets go on sale on July 23 at Computicket and Shoprite Checkers stores. Tickets cost R50 all round.
