Former Juventus centre-back Dario Bonetti is to be the new coach of Zambia, taking charge of their bid to reach the next African Nations Cup finals for the 11th time in their last 12 attempts.
Bonetti has signed a two-year contract and will be in charge of the side for the first time in September when they begin their qualifying campaign for the 2012 finals, Football Association of Zambia president Kalusha Bwalya said on Wednesday.
“We had a lot of applicants for the job but we think we have found the right guy. We want experience from the top level but also a youthful hunger,” he said.
The 48-year-old Bonetti, who also played at Roma and AC Milan and won two caps for Italy, has limited coaching credentials, having worked with his brother Ivano at Dundee in Scotland, taken charge of several lower league Italian sides, and coached Dinamo Bucharest in Romania for three months last year.
Bonetti replaces Frenchman Herve Renard, who left the Zambia job to take over as Angola coach in April.
Zambia begin their Nations Cup campaign against the Comoros Islands at home in September and also play Mozambique and Libya in their qualifying group.
