Botswana, Malawi win Afcon qualifiers

A goal early in the second half from Orlando Pirates’ Phenyo Mongala handed Botswana a 1-0 win over Chad in their African Nations Cup Group K qualifier in Gaborone yesterday.

The win is the second in nine days for Botswana, who stunned Tunisia with a 1-0 away win at the start of the qualifiers for the 2012 finals.

Botswana, who have never qualified for a Nations Cup finals before, next meet Malawi on August 11.

Malawi also earned an excellent point yesterday with a 1-all draw against Togo in Lome yesterday.

Midfielder Hellings Mwakasungula gave The Flames the lead in their opening Group K encounter, but the home side equalised in the second half.

The Malawians were missing two key defenders in James Sangala and Moses Chavula. Sangala was absent due to problems with his travel documents, while Chavula was withdrawn from the squad by his South African side Nathi Lions, who say he has a groin injury.

Also missing for coach Kinnah Phiri were Sweden-based striker Russell Mwafulirwa, whose club IFK Norrköping refused to release him, and APR forward Chiukepo Msowoya who also had travel document issues.

The game was not up to scratch, the pitch was not in a good condition, it was bumpy and very small for international standard. Players couldnt combine, they couldnt make 5 consecutive passes going forward non the less what is important is that we now have 6 points.

As much as i support Botswana football, due to the influx of Zimambwean players of recent years,i dont think the team they call the Zebras, has what it takes to qualify for the nations cup.Togo,Tunisia will qualify from this group but Malawi are going to have a strong say and if one of these two teams are not clever enough,Malawi will sneak through. As for the Zebras.......????????
