Malawians took to the streets on Monday evening as reality sunk in that the underdogs the Flames had caused one of the major upsets at the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations with a 3-0 thumping of World Cup finalists, Algeria's Desert Foxes.
Fans waved Malawi flags, horns blared and some chanted while others stripped naked as they danced through the country’s major cities Blantyre, Lilongwe and Mzuzu.
“This is unbelievable,” screamed a Mzuzu University second year student Joseph Sinyeka.
“Malawi has beaten giants such as Egypt but to defeat Algeria in such a manner was simply out of this world; more Fire Flames!”
Malawi radio stations dedicated their phone in programmes to the Flames who scored through Russel Mwafulirwa, Ivis Kafoteka and Dave Banda.
Coach Kinnah Phiri, who is already a cult hero in Malawi, told the press in a post-match interview that the win was the sweetest in the country’s soccer history.
“We have beaten Egypt but we did at home. To win here at the Nations Cup is great, I’m sure we have we have made Malawians happy,” the former Free State Stars mentor said.
