Following his recovery he joined Houston Dynamo, and made 88 appearances for the MLS team, scoring 15 goals, before joining Premier League outfit Bolton in 2010.

Holden first played international football for the United States at the Under-20 level, and in 2007 he was called up for two training camps with the U-23 team, culminating in a match against China’s U-23 side.

He was also part of the 2008 Olympic team, scoring in the winner on his debut against Japan. In 2009 he was named in the US Gold Cup team and scored on his first-team debut against Grenada.
