Donovan joined German club Bayer Leverkusen in 1999, becoming the youngest American player to sign for a foreign club at the age of 17.

However, at that tender age Donovan found life difficult in Germany and was granted a loan move back to America where he played for the San Jose Earthquakes. He became an instant hit in Major League Soccer and was named US Soccer Athlete of the Year in 2003.

After 87 appearances and 32 goals, Donovan returned to Leverkusen in 2005, but made just two starts for the club and earned a further five appearances for the club. He then requested a return to the United States and joined Los Angeles Galaxy where he has become established as one of the best players in the MLS.

Donovan scored a remarkable 57 goals in only 104 appearances for the Galaxy and in 2008 made a return to Europe and completed a brief loan move to Bayern Munich where he played six league matches.

The striker is widely considered the first name on the team sheet when picking the American national side and has gone on to win in excess of 100 caps for his country.
