After a couple of impressive stints with Lugano and various youth sides in Switzerland, he was signed jointly by Genoa and Udinese from Italy. He quickly attracted the attention of giants Lazio and moved to the club for the start of the 2005/2006 campaign.

After three years and 65 league appearances for the Serie A Club, he signed for West Ham in 2008 on a three-year deal and scored his first Premier League goal in November of that year.

Behrami has represented Switzerland at the Under18, Under19 and A levels. He scored a crucial goal for the national side in the first leg of their World Cup 2006 qualifier playoff tie against Turkey. He suffered a groin injury during the 2006 World Cup and missed out on much of the action.
