9 Alexander Frei
Frei started his professional career with his hometown club FC Basel in 1997. He enjoyed spells at other Swiss clubs Thun, Lucerne and Survette before joining French side Rennes in 2003 where he spent three seasons. He signed with German club Borussia Dortmund in 2006 and in 2009 he returned to his hometown club.
Frei represented Switzerland at Euro 2004 and also participated in the World Cup 2006 in Germany, where he scored two goals. In Euro 2008 he suffered an injury while captaining the Swiss team and missed the rest of the tournament, but remained on the bench with the remainder of the squad for inspiration.
