In 2007 Juventus snapped him up, but he was loaned out on a six-month deal to Atletico Madrid at the start of 2010.
He was part of the Chelsea side that secured the club’s first league title in 50 years in the 2004/05 season, and has also picked up silverwear at Benfica and Lyon.
He broke into the national side in 2002 and was included in the UEFA Euro 2004 squad. He played an important part in Portugal's 2006 World Cup qualifiers and has since established himself as a regular starter.
