Ricardo Carvalho joined the FC Porto youth team in 1996 and made his debut for the senior side the following year. He played a vital part in Porto's UEFA Champions League triumph in 2004 before following manager Jose Mourinho to current club Chelsea, where he has helped the Blues win consecutive Premier League titles.

It was rumored that Carvalho would be reunited with his former manager Mourinho at Inter Milan in the summer, but he opted to stay with the London-based club and has played a key part in Chelsea’s title win this season.

The centre-back made his debut for Portugal in 2003 and went on to win the best defender award at Euro 2004 alongside Sol Campbell. He has since cemented his place in the side, representing his country at the 2006 World Cup and Euro 2008.
