Nigel de Jong began his career at Ajax Amsterdam in 2002 and soon made enough an impact at the club to become a firm favourite with the fans.

He signed for Bundesliga side Hamburg in January 2006, and gained notoriety for being the man to score the winning goal as Bayern Munich lost their first game at their new stadium.

He remained in Germany for three years before joining mega-rich Manchester City in January 2009 for an undisclosed fee.

On the international stage, De Jong made his debut for the Netherlands in March 2004 against France and was a key player in the Euro 2008 finals for the Dutch, having been overlooked for Euro 2004 and missing the 2006 World Cup through injury.

His father is former Dutch international Jerry de Jong.
