Kim Nam-Il played in his youth for Hanyang University before starting his career at Chunnam Dragons in 2000.

He enjoyed a two-year spell from 2005 with Suwon Bluewings and spent the following year with Vissel Kobe. In 2010 he signed with FC Tom Tomsk.

Kim appeared for Korea Republic's Under-23 side in 1999, despite starting with the senior side the previous year.

Under the guidance of Guus Hiddink he became a solid holding midfielder and was named in the best XI of the 2002 Gold Cup.

In the 2002 World Cup he was nicknamed "The Vacuum Cleaner" for his defensive abilities.

In 2006 he was appointed as captain of the national team.
