Steve Mandanda started his professional career with La Havre in 2005 and joined Marseille in 2007, having had unsuccessful trials at Aston Villa at the start of 2007/08.

Mandanda played for the France Under-21 side from 2003, earning 17 caps until he was called up to the France B side in 2008, where he appeared in two matches. He made his full international debut in the 2-0 win against Ecuador in a Euro 2008 warm-up friendly.

He started the 2010 World Cup campaign as France's first-choice goalkeeper, but was later replaced by Hugo Lloris.

He has three younger brothers who all play goalkeeper – one of them, Parfait, is the DRC national team goalie.
