Jamie Carragher began playing football at the youth level with Liverpool in 1990 and went on to help win the FA Youth Cup in 1996. The defender’s performances in that competition saw Carragher break into the Anfield first-team, and he has since made well over 400 appearances for the Reds.

Carragher first got involved in the international level with the England Under-20 team in 1997, and the following season he was playing for the Under-21s.

He made his first-team debut in 1999, coming on as a second-half substitute in the friendly against Hungary, but had to wait two more years to pick up his first full international cap, playing in the clash against Holland in 2001. However, the Reds stalwart struggled to hold down a regular place in the England squad, and his subsequent frustration led to his retirement from international football in July 2007.

However, following a number of key injuries to defensive players, England boss Fabio Capello has coaxed Carragher out of retirement, and was named in the preliminary squad for the 2010 World Cup.
