Ponce started his senior career at Universidad de Chile in 2001, spending six years there and making 161 appearances. He had a short spell on loan to VfL Wolfsburg in the 2003-04 season. In 2008 he joined Velez Sarsfield before moving to Universidad Catolica in 2010.

In 2005 he started playing for the Chile national squad, scoring his first goal through a free-kick against Paraguay. He missed the 2007 Copa America due to injury but has since been a regular part of the first team.
