David Carney played for Everton in his youth and started professionally there in 2002. A year later he signed up with Oldham Athletic. In 2004 he moved to Hamilton Academical and then to Sydney FC. He signed with Sheffield United from 2007-2009 and then joined Dutch side FC Twente after a brief loan spell at Norwich City.

He played for Australia's Under-20 side in 2003 and made his debut for the national squad in 2006. He played for his country in the 2008 Olympic Games was part of the team that beat Qatar 3-0 in their first 2010 World Cup qualifier on 6 February 2008.
