Jones played in his youth with Bayswater City in Australia, where he played from 1997-99. He was signed by Middlesbrough in 2000 and in his time there has been on loan to numerous clubs.

Jones has appeared for the Australia U20 and U23 sides and received his first call-up to the national side on 5 February 2007, when he replaced Mark Schwarzer for a friendly game. He started his first game on 2 June 2007 against Uruguay, which resulted in a 2-1 defeat.
