The Socceroos have benefited from the increased competition after switching from the Oceania confederation to Asia in 2006.

Although it means a tougher road to the World Cup finals, with a number of top European-based players in their squad it proved no problem for the workmanlike Aussies.

They may be devoid of genuine world stars, but they will be one of the hardest teams to beat at the 2010 tournament and a handful for anybody who finds themselves pooled in the same group.
