Mascherano first made his name while representing his national side, making his international senior squad debut before playing for his club's first team at River Plate.

After his time with the Argentine side, Mascherano moved to Brazilian side Corinthians in July 2005, however he played only nine games for his new club that season before being ruled out due to injury. Hours before the 2006/7 summer transfer window closed Mascherano, along with team mate Carlos Tevez, was signed by West Ham.

The midfielder made just five league appearances at West Ham before being signed by Liverpool in January 2007, and he went on to become an invaluable member of the Reds' first team during the remainder of the season. He signed a four-year contract extension in February 2008. In November 2008, Argentina coach Diego Maradona named Mascherano the team's captain after his leadership skills at the Beijing Olympics.
