Lance Davids on trial with Portland Timbers

Davids heading for USA?

Posted: 2012-02-08 09:26

Bafana Bafana international Lance Davids is on trial with new Major League Soccer franchise Portland Timbers.

Davids played in the club’s 4-1 pre-season friendly win over USA champions LA Galaxy and is hopeful of winning a contract with the Oregan club.

The 26-year-old is nearing the end of his contract in Belgium and has made no secret of his desire to leave the club.

With the transfer window still open in the USA ahead of the new season, he could make the move now if Portland Timbers decide they like what they see. Lierse have also confirmed that they will allow him to leave.

“We were asked whether the player could play in a friendly against Los Angeles and we gave permission for it. It is now up to Portland to decide whether they want to sign the defender or not,” Lierse technical director Ruud Kaiser said.

Portland Timbers will become the 18th side in the MLS after joining the competition in 2012.

They are managed by former Chelsea and Everton forward John Spencer, a Scottish international who finished his career with the Colorado Rapids in the USA in 2004.

I actually wanted to make a comment on Davids yesterday,SA players in Belgium but thought I must wait for a piece on him only.

Not taking anything away from him,but I just feel in South Africa there is better players than him at thje moment & it quiete surprising that their business managers/agent have not thought about moving them to Belgium.

Lance is overall a slow player & I will never forget when his pace was exposed by Teko Modise Pirates at Ellis Park night fixture where Supersport lost 2-1 but still won the league.

@TP, talk about connections my man. Some players have connections everywhere.

At 26, he should be at he height of his game so going to USA says it all about his ability in the modern game where speed is needed to go with the skill.

@TP and Umsab/'ungamazi its not all about speed guys and you know what i can tell you 10 times when Teko was exposedsome other players and maybe 5 or more times Jali was exposed because of his height or Nyawana for that matter but all of those things do not make them bad players its about the ability to play beatifully according to what the couch wants and yeah i do not believe his is the best but he is OK, @Fofana its not ONLY about connections , its also about marketing you got know how to sell your products/players and match them with proper customers and even that too is not enough ultimately the player has to be good or the deal has to make sense for the enterprise vs whats available on the market @ bondocean: 26 yrs is good pieannar made a come back at that age and USA MLS is by far much better than Belgium league and SA PSL interms of money and infrasture for that matter that is why you have the likes of Thiery ,Junihno,Marquez,Beckham and 2 spain Top Spain team RM and Barca go there every year for the pre season games because they know of the stiff competition there and the MLS junior players beat BB top players at our backyard during Mandela challenge
