Safa concerned with Bafana's downward spiral

Safa CEO Robin Peterson says the country's football governing body is concerned with how Bafana Bafana is falling in the Fifa world rankings.
Bafana slipped four places to 56th on the world rankings that were released on 18 January, although they managed to maintain their 8th spot on the continetal rankings.
The abscence of Pitso Mosimane's charges at the 2012 edition of the Africa Cup of Nations means the team is likely to further slide down the rankings when they are released soon after the tournament.
Besides South Africa, the rankings of teams such as Egypt, Nigeria and Cameroon – who are also not taking part in the Afcon – will also be affected owing to inactivity.
Peterson, who tells KickOff.com that Safa are close to finalising a deal that will see Bafana playing against Senegal next month – says the football mother body has come up with an effective plan that will give Bafana a chance to regain respect on the international stage.
"I can promise football fans that Bafana will play a competitive match on every Fifa date this year," says Peterson.
"We are in the final stages of finalising the friendly match against Senegal and we will make an announcement when we are ready.
"The idea is for Bafana to play regularly so that they do not become inactive," adds the Safa CEO.
While Bafana will play Senegal at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban if Safa manage to secure the friendly, the football body is also in the process of courting teams such as Cameroon and Nigeria with the hope of securing strong opponents for Bafana during future Fifa dates.
Mosimane – who recently returned to South Africa from the Afcon where he was "spying" on 2014 World Cup qualifying opponents Botswana – has asked Safa to arrange friendly matches against strong European teams or countries ranked within the top 10 teams in Africa.
