Aaron Mokoena says Portsmouth's financial situation is scary

Mokoena: Situation is scary

Posted: 2012-01-31 17:17

Aaron Mokoena admits "everyone at the club is worried" after Portsmouth failed to pay their players' wages for January.

The English Championship club were issued with a winding-up petition by Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs – the most serious action that can be taken against a complany in the UK, usually leading to compulsory liquidation of the company.

Portsmouth's parent company, Convers Sports Initiatives, entered administration in November, forcing the club to search for new owners.

The club's bank accounts have also been frozen, and administrator Andrew Andronikou has revealed the club have missed two tax payments of £800,000 (+/- R9.8-million).

Portsmouth have released a statement confirming that they are seeking a court order to have their bank accounts unfrozen, "so that staff wages and suppliers can be paid", which they expect to take "a few days".

In order to keep using their bank account, the club will have to prove that their creditors, Balram Chainrai and Alexandre Gaydamak, will be better off by them doing so.

Mokoena, who has made 16 appearances for the club this season, tells ITV Sport: "It's a scary feeling at the moment, everyone at the club is worried, I have to be honest.

"The fact that there's always been problems year after year is a serious concern and is a serious problem for everyone involved at the club," the former Bafana Bafana captain says. "At the moment it's even worse as we don't really know what's happening or what is going to happen."

Mokoena says all he and his teammates can do is win games, "and hopefully that can open doors to people with money or business people to come and invest at the club.

"We need a solid investor in the club, a person who will come and make sure that the passionate supporters get what they deserve, the players get what they deserve. Take our staff, we are all in one, we love the club, we want to do something for the club but we need a bit of a boost."

Portsmouth are 16th on the Championship table (out of 24), and have managed four wins and two draws in their last 10 matches. Mokoena says new manager Michael Appleton is turning things around on the pitch: "He's managed to put the squad together in difficult circumstances that tells you a lot about this man.

"Being managed by such a person says a lot and now results are saying it all, we think we can go on to win many more games."

Wandile : 2012-01-31 17:35

The ancestors are punishing you for single handedly causing hearache to over 40 million South Africans.

My young nephew, who was six then is still haunted by the Mexico game/dissapointment.

brazilitto : 2012-01-31 17:48

@ holla sweyts and wandile. Dis is a man who fired that bullet call Mexico after his friend shabba has triggered it. Gentlemen let's not disturb dis cow while he is grazing Queen Elizabeth's grass. The longer he stays in the uk, de better are de chances that he will never play in dis country as a professional again. Psl is better without people like mbazo.

Sweyts : 2012-01-31 18:25

100% caps record of trimatising fans and doing nothing to improve the team. At least Radebe won African cup of Nations with his team. he went on and lead SA in two world cups and was Leads United Captain. what Mokoena did was only 2 scare us , collect more caps 4 himself and more red cards.

Waza: 2012-01-31 22:02

This is how Mbazo is appreciated in othr parts of the world..

musa : 2012-02-01 01:47

I was alwayz hurt broken Mbazo was a captain. I even stopped watching Bafana games while he was bussy accumulating caps 4 himself and playing nonsense. I really don't care whatever other ppl appretiate from him. I will never appretiate a captain who was leader of a team that was an embarasment in front of a nation 4 such a long time and he didn't even notice that there was something wrong with the team.

Swona Champ!: 2012-02-01 07:28

muthis is finished now, if it was those days, Sir Alex was going to sign him!

Obi: 2012-02-01 08:08

Quick question: after Mokoena left your precious bafana bafana how many games did you win?.....just curious, since he was the one causing Bafana bafana to loose games.

PhatKatt: 2012-02-01 08:15

Guys, you can blame Aron all you like but it won'nt solve the problem. The fact of the matter is SA has no quality players. At least his is playing in England, something I can't say about most of our so called superstars (Itumeleng Khune, Teko, Tshabalala, Reneilwe, .......). Look at the current national squad. Are they playing better football? He achieved more than enough as a player. English people have notice that by honouring him. Sometimes I wonder how South African minds work. In state of appreciating his commitment to the national squad and achievements as a player you rather be negative. Look at how he was axed from the national squad. We were suppose to arrange a benefit match for him, to say goodbye in a professional matter, in state we were celebrating as if we have solved the problem. Look at France’s world cup disaster, but they din't throw stones at individuals, in state they identified the problem and dealt with it. Look at us we were celebrating after the clueless coach Mosimane axed Aron. But the question is, did he solve the problem, I don’t think so. But I am not surprised typical South African, always and forever find someone or something to blame. Look at our country, people vote for incompetent ANC and a day after they are on the street toyi-toyi, blaming white man for lack of quality service. The fact of the matter is that SAFA is rotten to the core, no one is bold enough to say it. Until we fix the problem we will always blame the like of abo- Mbazo. Aron forget about this haters, you have achieved more than this overrated cows playing in the PSL. In my opinion you achieved more than Lucas, Mark Fish, Eric Tinckler overseas. We failed to qualify for the AFCON without Aron Mokoena, who are we going to blame now.

vusik : 2012-02-01 09:33

Please dont come back to jomo cosmos, WE DONT NEED YOU. you are such a disgrace to our nation.

Van Basten: 2012-02-01 10:57

Had he been in the team as a captain especially our last qualifier at home,he would have reminded everybody that the game was a must win since he was on top of his game and aware of the rules. Typical South Africans. If somebody never played for Chiefs before, they get this kind of treatment more especially if you once were a Jomo player, ask, makalakalane,Masinga,September ,Nhleko, the list is endless. No wonder Nigerians in SA look down on us because we do not appreciate our own.

Michael Dinane : 2012-02-01 21:15

i would like to see Mbazo finishing his carrier here at home like Benni I realy appreaciate what he did Benni in the eighteen area
