Leslie Sedibe says Bafana must qualify for Afcon

Sedibe explains Mosimane mandate

Posted: 2010-07-15 19:55

Safa CEO Leslie Sedibe says it is critical that Bafana Bafana qualify for the next two editions of the Africa Cup of Nations – along with the 2014 World Cup – which is why these conditions are loosely attached to Pitso Mosimane’s mandate as the new coach.

Mosimane has taken up a four-year contract filled with performance-related clauses that have to be met with; the most bold being the qualification to the 2012 and 2013 Africa Cup of Nations finals. Bafana failed to qualify for the 2010 tournament for the first time since winning the continental cup in 1996.

“The worth of the contract that Pitso has is in line with a professional of his calibre,” says Sedibe, without giving much about the financial details of the contract, though it is definite that Mosimane will earn less than half of what Carlos Albert Parreira got.

“It is critical that we qualify for the Nations Cup and the World Cup and I am glad that the coach understands the mandate from the people of South Africa.

“A key performance area is also around development and synergising a national programme across all levels because we need a uniform approach. We are confident in the coach. He will have the right to choose people in his technical team,” says Sedibe.

Safa president Kirsten Nematandani added that it was key to have continuity in Mosimane’s appointment, while promising a stronger approach to competitions like the Cosafa.

Meanwhile, Mosimane will get his first test of action at the helm when he leads his charges against World Cup quarter-finalists Ghana next month as part of preparations for the upcoming 2012 Gabon-Equatorial Guinea Nations Cup qualifiers.

The difficult match against the Black Stars will take place at Soccer City on Wednesday, August 11 at 20h30.

Ghana were the pride of Africa at the recent World Cup and will definitely provide a stern challenge for Bafana should they bring their strong squad on this Fifa calendar date.

The friendly will come just three weeks before Bafana get their 2012 Nations Cup qualification off with a home match against Niger at Mbombela Stadium on September 4.

Bafana are in Group G along with Sierra Leone and African champions Egypt in a pool in which group winners will qualify automatically, while the two best runners from the 10 Groups containing four teams will also qualify.

The top two nations in the five-team Group K (Botswana, Malawi, Chad, Togo and Tunisia) are automatically guaranteed of their places joining the two host nations in making up the 16 countries.

HAVE YOUR SAY: Do you think Safa will allow Mosimane to do his job without interference?

Good job SAFA for making Pitso the Bafana Bafana head coach. I'm elated by these news as I've been waiting for so long for a local coach.

Now to you Pitso, dont try to qualify Bafana Bafana to the Nations Cup in 2012, you MUST DO IT, got it, get it, yeah right. Secondly, we need to see these boys in Brazil in 2014, and you MUST ENSURE THEY GET TO THE SECOND ROUND there, got it, get it, yeah right.

I'm 100% behind you in support and I know you can DO IT!!!

Good move, we need strong nations to prepare ourselves not these third & fourth division non league teams. Now Pitso, the failure & success of Bafana Bafana is in your hands boet!!!

Show us what you got @ international level Pitso, period!!!

This is good news for SA football, this is where we supposed to start when we talk about development in football at coaching level because the so-called big teams are hiring overseas coaches for short-term goals.Iam so happy about the new SAFA leadership with their vision and long term planning.Teams like German,Spain,Holland have done the same thing and the results are there for everyone to see except the blind and ignorant.

Zweli: 2010-07-16 06:46

Like i said before. Pitos deserved the job and he still does. Congratulations are in order for Pisto... he deserves a chance. I know he can and will do well...
No go out there and win the AFCON for us... yes you can!!

Soccer Critic ( Tivani ): 2010-07-16 07:43

Taking one step forward and two steps backwards! If we are really serious about winning in the SWC in Brazil in 2014, or at least get through the FIRST round, then we are going to have to take a very serious look at soccer in this country starting at grassroots level and all the way to the top to the SAFA fat cats! A determined, coordinated, well organised and skilled soccer culture in SA is almost non-existent...or do you also have to be a BEE candidate to make it to play soccer at the highest level in this country? No wonder our "professionals" can't even pass or kick a ball properly...brainless soccer!
SAFA should learn from the mistakes they made in the last decade. They must simply follow standard procedure. When a high profile post is made open have candidates apply (Manqoba Mqheti, Khabo Zondo, dare I mention Gavin Hunt and Gordon Igesund). Being Assistant coach does not automatically make you a great coach. No one would like to see Pitso fail but Bafana needs to take that next step. Replacing Perrira with Pitso is DEFINATELY a few notches down.

Soccer Critic ( Tivani ): 2010-07-16 07:46

I still believe this is an affirmative action appointment. Pitso is not the answer to Bafana's malaise. He was not a star during his playing days and his eagerness to get the Bafana job was just driven by a hefty salary which is reportedly R5million annually. Safa has blundered once more. Gavin Hunt or Gordon Igesund were better candidates

Swona (Treble): 2010-07-16 08:01

to be honest, I dont like the idea of Pitso being our head coach, and their Perreira links, but I love my country, and I will support the national team, and what they did to Jali, it makes me wonder!

Swona (Treble): 2010-07-16 08:05

and the funny part is we might not qualify for 2012, not to mention 2014, yes I said it and it's true,

Edwin: 2010-07-16 08:20

Pitso I wish you all the best and Safa has made a right call to promoto you, and we shall pray for you to succeed so that your enemies should eat big humble pies, A modimo wa thaba ya zione a be le wena ka nako tsohle, Amen.

Wonder: 2010-07-16 08:21

Fair expectations as far as i'm concerned, Pitso needs to rise up to the occasion for the sake of all our local coaches, otherwise they will all be judged harshly should he fail.

You have my full support coach, go on and make us proud...!!!!!!

Wandile : 2010-07-16 08:22

I have mixwed feelings about hia appointment but believe that he deserves a chance. I'll allow the wheels of time to judge his perfomance.

My 2 cents worth of opinion. Incorporate the U20's that nearly beat Ghana U2o,s (who are now the crux of the Ghana set up) in Youth Championship. i.e
Erasmus, Claasen, Mokhojwa, Serero,Kwela, Bhengu,

An open letter to Pitso Mosimane

16 July 2010
OFF-SIDE! Rams Mabote

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DEAR Jingles. My congratulations are in order, my friend, after your appointment as Bafana Bafana coach.

I’m sure I can call you my friend. Being appointed national coach is nothing but an honour, especially after the World Cup when many around us are falling like dominoes.

Unfortunately, I don’t think the job should be given to you. In my view, South Africa still needs a big-name coach with international experience and a pedigree at World Cup level.

My preference for big- name coaches is not only because they are more experienced than you and have CVs that are beyond reproach, but importantly, I think at this stage of our football we still need someone with much broader international experience, which you do not have.

But even more importantly, the local football scene is a minefield .

While we are among the most lucrative football nations to work for, with incentives that compete with the best in the world, we are not the best run and most organised machine.

Other than well-documented squabbles among the officials – and that’s putting it mildly – that always threaten to derail what happens on the pitch, we are also fettered with too many “experts” who will always interfere in the coach’s job.

For some reason, and I suspect partly because of an inferiority complex, these experts hardly ever interfere with foreign coaches, even such underachieving buffoons like Joel Santana.

But when it comes to South African coaches, you can be sure that your space will be cluttered with the drunken views of pretenders, as well as point-blank interference from the paymasters.

One more thing that is not in the favour of South African coaches – and I suspect you included – is that they are not immune to petty favouritism for players from previous clubs.

How many times have we seen coaches taking undeserving players to tournaments, only to trace it back to the history between the coach and the players? Think of Andrew Rabutla and Ricardo Katza, among others.

Ideally, you should have remained assistant coach for the next four years, with a clear succession plan that you would take over in 2014.

But the strategy – that word that is strange to Safa apparatchiks – would have had to be developmental.

I would have rather you were given the reins over the Under-20 side as part of your key performance areas.

In the next four years, you would have been expected to take them to the Olympics in 2012 and hopefully to the Under-20 World Cup in 2013.

Once that was done, I argue that you would have created your own squad to take to Brazil for the World Cup in 2014. This is not rocket science.

I merely observed what Ghana did and why they were the bright sparks of the World Cup.

But the job has been offered to you, mate, and we will have to live with that. Even then, as I was taking a shower yesterday morning before writing this piece, I wished I had spoken to you before you took the offer.

For starters, you are being asked to perform the impossible.

In a month’s time you will be campaigning for the African Nations Cup of 2012. Egypt, ranked first in Africa and ninth in the world, are in our group.

It is no secret that your chances of qualifying for 2012 are as slim as those of you enjoying an interference-free rein as Bafana boss. Your best bet is to be the best second- placed team .

Having said that, I will support you unconditionally. But I will not treat you with kid gloves when you falter just because you are black, and I will not attack you unfairly just because you are black.

Good luck.

Congratulation Madala, do us proud. The last thing i want see is finding 50% of SSU players at our national team, imagine Thabo September wearing an arm-belt 4 BB on debut he he he he, but with pitso anything is possible.

lebohang: 2010-07-16 09:18

congrats pitso and i hope you succeed for yourself foremost and your yearning for success. secondly for the football loving people of SA. harness us having fallen in love with bafana again.

to safa: you boldly state performance clauses which had never before been claimed in previous coaches' contracts. we always wanted this, even from clubs, but i hope it is not bcoz u feared the foreign coaches that this is now 'introduced'

to rams mabote: ur ****ysis is of some1 with an inferiority complex itself. we have had numerous foreign coaches including parreira who, have had arguable success with our national team. to blindly seek foreign expertise when we do not have an idea of what we have in the 1st place is ludicrous. foreign expertise are best at helping shape not dictating. donadoni, dunga, blanc, deschamps, southgate, guardiola, bruce, mancini, are examples of coaches given opportunities by either national associations or clubs without the 110 year apprenticeship you require for pitso. granted the football culture is more stable and your suggestion re u/20's is the best thing about your letter.

congrats pitso and may you succeed.

hey wena soccer critic, how dare u compare Teko 2 Pienaar, they r way different. We all know Tekos time is over, he is like a 1 hit wonder, he made it big at an old age and only blossomed for 2yrs. Pienaaar has been a star since his days at School of excellence. Pienaar was a star at the confeds. Pienaar is one yr older than Teko but he achieved 100times more than what Teko will achieve in his lifetime. Infact ur hatred for Pienar is based on racism, u cant bare a coloured beating a black man. Im black asswell bt will not turn a blind eye on what is real. Get over it or else u will hate soccer and stop lying to the readers we all follow soccer

Pienaar, who is recovering from injury, is already looking ahead to next season with Everton.

“It is really an honour to win, not only because of the award itself but also receiving it in the (Anglican) Cathedral makes it something special,” Pienaar said. “My league is starting now for next season. Hopefully I can return for Portsmouth then go to the World Cup with my national team and then come back for the other games at Everton next season.” – additional information from evertonfc.com

Tivani are you k@##ked or just stupid bro, on what channel do you watch bafana games.TEKO is the most over rated player in SA. I'M A Pirates supporter and do not think he even belongs in the BAFANA setup. Where do you get your facts from who told you that Steven is a RACIS, do you think that he likes playing with guys including Teko that’s in BAFANA just because of keeping the BEEE status up to date. Do you really in your right mind think Teko is better than Steven, either you do not have a clue or you just stupid. Let me tell you one thing Teko will never make in Europe. And the only reasons why he is in Bafana is because he is black and plays for Pirates. Bro your comments are f@#$%k I don’t even thing you know anything about soccer have you ever played the game. Teko is not even close to Steven he doesn't even belong in the same dressing room. And he is not racist The guy travel thousands of miles and he must play alongside Teko. Would you leave your 9 TO 5 job where you work with the best in the world to come and work with middle class average worker. That's why Piennar needs to kak them out, They play ****. You should be glad Steven makes effort to still play alongside the likes of Teko and Them they are all over rated not even close to Steven. Bro YOUR BEEE BAFANA is USELESS . One thing is certain. Ke nako.
Steven beat players like Arteta, who are currently wearing the number 10 at Everton. The next step is for Steven to get either the 12 or 8.

But in South Africa, I don't think Teko, who can't dribble past a training beacon, should be wearing the number 10. He should give it to Schillo.

This gangkrap, sideways-dribbling, tsamaya-only Teko, until he retires a veteran like Lekoelea retired Tovey can't fool himself into believing he's number 10 at Pirates. OK other players are afraid of it, but it doesn't mean he qualifies to wear it.

Moriri could easily wear it for the squad. He scores (head and foot), dribbles, creates.

Teko is useless and only Pirates(i doubt) can use him in football. The boy not only let the country down, but he filled the space that might have otherwise been filled by a more deserving young player who would proberly have gone to even greater highs after the WC. I am sure even the sponsors are seriously looking at his contract because they r definately not getting their returns on that mindless, thoughtless, irreperable useless innovativeless, optionless, hopeless so called player by the name of Teko Modise.
