Siphiwe Tshabalala's thunderous strike against Mexico in the opening match of the Fifa 2010 World Cup has been shortlisted for goal of the tournament.

The Kaizer Chiefs midfielder's volley at Soccer City on June 11 against the Central Americans is battling it out for top spot with some of the finest goals witnessed during Africa's first-ever World Cup.

Carlos Tevez's strike for Argentina against Mexico in round 16 at Soccer City has also been nominated and the others to be nominated include Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez's curling shot against Korea Republic, also in round 16. Netherlands skipper Giovanni van Bronckhorst's stunner against Uruguay in the semifinals in Cape Town has also made the cut.

Diego Forlan is also in line for the award for his left-footed strike from outside the box against Germany in the third place play-off at the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium.

This is great!! And it should be a confidence boost to the guys, as SA are not known for ''taking great shots at goal, especially at a long range'', also considering that Katlego Mphela's thunderous free-kick in the 2009 CONFED CUP also got the nod from the FIFA selectors.

Good luck..I think it comes as the 3rd/4th best goal.
1. Giovanni Van Bronckhorst against Uruguay
2. Diego Forlan- Against Germany/Bafana/Ghana.

Tjoooooo!!

Oh Shucks Shabalala............!!!

And he plays for which TEAM? DA BEST

Mesh - K 4 L: 2010-07-15 12:03

I just Mphela's goal is being rated as the WORST goal a striker has ever scored.

Wonder: 2010-07-15 12:07

Wish he wins the award, but truth be told, i the Forlan and Van Bronkhorst will battle it out for the top honours. be that as it may, i will be voting for Shabba'a goal and hope other supporters do too. do not like be some Kaizer Chimps supporters who voted against Mphela just because he was playing for a rival team, lets support Shabba and hopes he wins it.

Latest News from FIFA.com

As well as winning the adidas Golden Ball for the tournament’s best player, Diego Forlan has another reason to celebrate after FIFA.com users voted his strike in the match for third place against Germany as the Goal of the Tournament!
The Atletico Madrid forward’s acrobatic volley which bounced into the rain-sodden turf and back up past Hans-Jorg Butt was the overall favourite, with Giovanni van Bronckhorst wonder-goal against Uruguay coming in second.
Picking up the ball over 30 yards from goal on the left, he unleashed a stunning drive which the goalkeeper, despite applying a despairing touch, could only divert into the top corner via the inside of the post.
Forlan’s goal follows Maxi Rodriguez’s strike against Mexico, which was voted as Goal of the Tournament for Germany 2006.

Now I'm thinking, was Kickoff.com late in posting this on the site or did FIFA know the outcome before posting the competitors on the site?

Ghana’s preparations for the 2012 African Nations Cup qualifying campaign will get under way with a friendly against South Africa.

Milovan Rajevac’s Black Stars will return to the 2010 World Cup host nation for an international friendly against the Bafana Bafana on August 11.

The game, the first for both sides after the Word Cup finals will be played at the Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg.

Ghana would use the friendly as build-up to the African Nations Cup qualifying in September against Swaziland, who play a similar style like the Bafana Bafana.

The road to Gabon and Equatorial Guinea in 2012 gets under way on the first weekend of September against Swaziland with the Black Stars playing the first group match away from home.

The game in the Rainbow Nation will also serve as a sign of appreciation for the wonderful support accorded Ghana during the World Cup, as the Black Stars return to a familiar ground.
