Messi, Tevez to test Bafana

Fans in Johannesburg will have the opportunity to see Barcelona's Lionel Messi and Manchester City's Carlos Tevez in action against Bafana Bafana on May 27.

The Argentinians fresh from a 1-0 away win over Germany, will be Carlos Alberto Parreira's toughest opponents, were announced by Safa as one of the South Africans last pre-WC opponents in Durban yesterday.

Parreira is understandably happy with the latest development.

"I told my CEO (Leslie Sedibe) that I want strong teams like Denmark and Argentina, not the small teams who don't help us. What's the use of playing against small teams when you are preparing for the World Cup?" asked the Brazilian-born coach.

"Argentina beat Germany at their own stadium on Wednesday and that's one of the most difficult things to do. So this is going to be the best possible preparation for our team.

"We need experience and that cannot be bought at any supermarket," said Parreira.

However, the coach of La Albiceleste is on a high and is already hoping that his squad is good enough to emulate the Argentine sides of 1978 and 1986.

"What we showed is that we have a team who can become world champions for the first time in 24 years," Maradona said.

"I thank God that Messi is Argentinian. And I will thank God if he can make us world champions again. That is what we will go to South Africa to do - become World Champions."

Argentina is up against Nigeria, Korea Republic and Greece in Group B and play their first match against the West African on June 12.

Bafana Bafana is also scheduled to play Denmark on June 5 – six days before the national team play their opening World Cup match against Mexico at Soccer City on June 11.

From a Proudly South African perspective . . .These are the games we need. We need to get used to meauring ourselves up by playing big teams even after the world cup. The more of these games we get, the more will improve our international standard.

As for Argentina, I hope Maradona is not fooled by that win over Germany. That squad is still missing something. I would say it still needs Riquelme and Cambiaso. Tevez and Higuain should be his 2 strikers, use Messi on the wing, Riquelme on the other wing,Cambiaso and Veron as holding. Give Riquelme and Messi free roles, and push his wing backs up . . .then Argentina will be deadly.

Yes, I know . . .I should become a coach . . .lol
