Argentina win for third time

Posted: Jun 22 2010

Argentina beat Greece 2-0 at the Peter Mokaba Stadium to win Group B while Greece go home.

The goal was scored by Martin Demichelis and Martin Palermo in the second half.

Otto Rehhagel's man were dominated for the majority of the match and tried to hit Argentina on the counter attack. The Albiceleste proved to be too strong though and eventually cruised to a comfortable win.

Maxi Rodriguez almost opened the score seconds before the half-time break when the Greek defence allowed him too much space inside the area. Tzorvas saved the winger's shot from close range though.

The loose ball was then picked up by the Argentinians again and Messi eventually won possession at the edge of the box. The Barcelona star tried his luck with a placed shot, but Tzorvas was once again on hand to deny the tricky forward.

Greece started the second half brilliantly and Samaras almost gifted his side the lead minutes after the break. Demichelis had slipped, leaving Samaras with a one-on-one against Burdisso. Samaras' initial shot was deflected, but he reached the ball first fired from a tight angle, and missed wide of the far post.

Demichelis finally broke the deadlock in the 79th minute after a corner kick. His first attempt was blocked by teammate Milito, but the error prone defender didn't waste any time to fire home the rebound from close range.

Messi then finally showed a flash of brilliance with five more minutes to go. The Barcelona star went by two opponents before beating the Greek glovesman with a good shot, only to see his shot hit the upright.

Veteran striker Martin Palermo added his name to the score sheet in the dying seconds of the game. Tzorvas was able to save Messi's shot from twenty yards out, but Palermo was alert to slot home the rebound.

This result is terible...i dont wanta talk bout the coach today...the present SE has deep problems....the team has got too many average players who shouldn't even go close to the team at all...if i start mentioning names....'ll mention more than half of the present team....this present team is realy rubbish....i dont know and dont realy care who the next coach is gointa be.. no matter how tactically sound the coach might be...he needs to drop his tactics somwhere...and dig deep to search for real naija boys wey dey play football...this fantastic players are everywhere locally and abroad..this is not an age matter...its bout being talented and oozing class...
yakubu is horrible (the f.o.o.l with the captain’s hand band was actually angry when he was substituted i don’t know why!!!) and i need to mention that his penalty was poor ..we were lucky it went it...if only the South Korean obeyed the simple rule of goalkeeping..he would hav caught the penalty quite easily...cos the ball wasn’t well directed....obasi..obina..ideye....kaita.. ...echjinle..****tu...odiah(even though he had a above average performance today)..Afolabi..ayila.yakubu..should not be in the super eagles at all...the team needs a complete overhaul from defenders to the attackers....Can u imagine..kanu as old and slow as he has become still playing a lot beta than most of these so called younger boys ...he was in my opinion, our best player today...which means that our present team jst doesn't av any quality..as kanu still showed them ow to do it...the ability and talent gap btw the old and the present generation of SE...is just too wide....it is simply appauling.....looks to me like we need to start from the very beginning after the nff elections....that is anoda side of the story...i can only hop God intervenes to bring in pple to the nff who will genuinely wanta move our football forward....i need to end on a positive note...i sincerely hope the SE will be Super again starting from the next nations cup....i hop for once the football administrators will make decisions that will move our football forward...i love the eagles!!!
