Brilliant Brazil thump Ivorians

Posted: Jun 20 2010

Brazil qualified for the last 16 of the World Cup with a 3-1 win against Ivory Coast in their Group G clash at Soccer City on Sunday, but had star midfielder Kaka controversially sent off.

Kaka was dismissed for a second yellow card in the final minutes for pushing Abdelkader Keita, but it appeared the Ivorian had wildly exaggerated the impact of the shove by falling to the ground clutching his head.

Sevilla forward Luis Fabiano showed Brazilian flair in both his goals, which takes the Dunga-coached South American giants into the knockout phase with their final group game with Portugal still to come.

Midfielder Elano compounded Ivory Coast’s misery with a well-taken shot on 62 minutes after some great work on the left wing from Kaka, before Didier Drogba scored a late consolation goal on 79 minutes. But Elano was later stretchered off the field with what seemed to be a nasty shin injury.

Chelsea striker Drogba started for the Ivory Coast despite his broken arm, but the Premier League star was largely overshadowed as Dunga's side lived up to their mantra Joga Bonito – play beautifully – with some Brazilian magic.

The Brazilians opened the scoring when Kaka slotted a pass between two defenders for Luis Fabiano to blast his shot high into the net past Elephants' goalkeeper Boubacar Barry on 25 minutes.

The Elephants finished the half on the attack with Portsmouth forward Aruna Dindane testing Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar, but it stayed 1-0 at the break.

Luis Fabiano again showed his class as his three touches – with a suspicion of handball – saw him beat three defenders before rifling his shot past Barry, who could only get a glove to the ball on 52 minutes.

Elano, who also scored in Brazil's 2-1 win over North Korea in their opening game, then got in on the act when Kaka squared the ball from the left wing for the Galatasaray midfielder to score after an hour.

Drogba got on the score sheet when he beat Brazil's offside trap for an unmarked header, which rolled past goalkeeper Julio Cesar with 11 minutes left.

The game turned bad-tempered as Kaka picked up a yellow card for a push on Yaya Toure on 85 minutes.

It turned into a red three minutes later when Keita ran into the Brazilian, who was looking the other way, and then crumpled to the floor, clutching his face, and the referee saw it as a foul.

Brazil face Portugal in their final group match on Friday in Durban, while the Ivory Coast face North Korea in Nelspruit at the same time.

Another disapointing performance from an African team. Cote d'ivoire are super flops. Bunch of talented individual players but ineffective as a team.
Anyway beleive it or not my crystal ball tells me that Nigeria may be the only african team to qualify for the second round.

The second goal by Fabiano was a complete robbery. Two hand ***** by Fabiano and the refree pretended not to have seen it. Too bad !!

SABELO : 2010-06-20 22:38

The second should nt have stand, fabiano used his hand twice to control the ball

I think k'aka's red card must be rescinded or cancelled as soon as possible.

Knox: 2010-06-20 22:59

Kaka deserves it, wat was the elbow doing. Great display anyway. All African teams are out in the first round, wat a shame.

fabiano used his hands,bt dats not an excuse 4 dat dull perfomance frm de ivorians...dey wer lucky not 2 get red cards on dose leg-breakin fowls on elano&bastos.... Once again,a disasterous perfomance frm an african team..

Hopefully, Mamadou Gaye on Supersports can keep his mouth permanently shut now. After the Arg game vs Nig, he said Enyeama saved Nig, but why Bari cannot save him from humiliation today. The Ivorian players are rather butchers not fine footballers! The same tactics they employed against Portugal, but didnt work tonight. Sorry, African teams are not there yet, keep working guys.

I watched the game and it is unfortunate that Cote d’Ivoire couldn't play as a team. They displayed individual skills and resorted to hard tackling particularly towards the end of the game. They were lucky not to have earned a red card. Though Kaka was given the marching order less than 5 minutes to regulation time, if Cote d'Ivoire had played as a team perhaps the score line could have been different! Cote d’Ivoire tried to apply some pressure on Brazil defence when Kaka was sent off but it was too late for them to make any serious impact.

CIV failed in their second group match against a better side in the Samba boys from Brazil.
But I believe it is not all over for the Elephants in the group to moved to 2nd round.
They still have a slim chance like Nigeria, Algeria and South Africa.

They have to beat North Korea on last group match and wait for the results b/w the Portugal vs North Korea match as well as that of Brazil / Portugal.

However, I am extremely disappointed with all the African teams because we are supposed to have passed this stage where we have to depend on other teams in our group to move to 2nd round.

Now Cameroun is out.
It is only a miracle that will moved South Africa, Nigeria, Algeria and CIV to the 2nd round.
Even Ghana's position is not guaranteed as their group is still open couple with the fact that they face a stronger opposition in the Germans on the last group match while the Serbians entertains the Australians.

The exit situation of these Africans countries shows a negative representation of this talented continent and it is high time CAF comes up with a model to assist participating African representatives in the next mundial.

I propose that CAF henceforth arrange and organise a 2 week mock tourney to be held in a similar climatic country (African or non-African) with the WC host nation for all the qualified participating African teams with their 30-man list for a showndwn and test-run. After the mock tournament, the coach will be able to pick their final 23-man list to submit to FIFA.
This will also aid early camping, good team selection and a great participating spirit among players.

Imagine if the Six African teams (South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroun, CIV and Algeria) had played a six-nation Mock tournament in Cape town and Johannesburg respectively.

Our six African teams would have acclimatize and familiarize with the Jubalani ball before the WC proper.

We would have seen a different team spirit and approach to what is happening to our darlyn teams today.
Believe me!!!!

Well, let’s hope a miracle happens to move Nigeria, CIV, Algeria and South Africa to the next round.
For the Black stars, they already have one foot in the 2nd round, it is left for them to take a win or (at worst) a draw against the Germans because a loss is totally not acceptable.
Their fate is in their own hands.

Go Africa....GO!

God no dey sleep!

Brazil has shown and exposed most African "teams" for what they are...full of individuals with good skills but not capable in working as a team for the good of their countries.

Brilliant game by the Brazilians, I hope all the South Africans have seen how Brazilians can work with one striker n six defenders so efficiently n effectively. I am nt sure whether we still blame the coach or players, what I have seen with Fabiano I hope Mphela have seen it, the most important thing is to control the ball , delay for support n shoot for a goal when necessary.

Don't be suprised if all African teams are butted out of the group stages. So far Ghana and Nigeria stand a chance. I you look at Ghana's situation, they are likely to be butted out. Germany need a win in order to progress and if they get it and Serbia beat Australia, Ghana is out. Ghana have won their 2 matches playing with a 10-men opposition and with penalties. They won't be always as lucky. Nigeria's chances are slim too as I don't see them beating South Korea.

This flop Sven can say what he likes but he's a failure (failed with a star-studded England and nearly cost what's arguably the most attack-minded team in the world cup (mexico) a chance to qualify). In short, Sven cost Ivory Coast the game yesterday by fielding fringe players ahead on the most enterprising player (Gervhino), playing Zokora as centre-back and Tiene as a left back. You can't face Brazil with a make-shift defence, please!!!
Besides Sven, what really made be sad was to see Africans not united, a lot of South Africans (particularly non-Blacks) supported Brazil and made them feel like the home team. Even Drogba couldn't feel that the Ivorians had any support. On any other day I do admire Brazilian football, but when they're playing my fellow Africans , I'll not support them. As African football followers, I believe we missed a great opportunity to unite behind our African teams, I mean what made it so difficult for the likes of Ashante Kotoko, Chiefs, Pirates, ASEC, etc supporters to come together and unite in support of African teams??
